Redolent. No wait, I mean mansuetude.

damn, and here I was getting all prepared to congratulate all Meta for having the balls to not post any complaints to MeTa for a whole 24 hours.

'tis but a dream.

[sigh]

Um, just remember, Google's "define" function doesn't know everything. And just because a post uses an SAT word doesn't make it a bad choice of words.

Are choice bad words the quiddity of MeTa?
posted by taz at 12:24 PM on July 31, 2004

Johnny, Google may be wrong, but the poster who said "derogation during" was wrong.

The whole point is that if you are going to use "SAT words," then at least know how to use them. I'm not going to give you a grammar lesson, but perhaps you might not defend something that is patently wrong.

johnny assay, even if that's what was intended, it's not used correctly (needs "of" or "to").
(although i admit i didn't know it - anyone have an oxford dictionary handy? i'm hoping it's some foul americanism...)

Me: "whoah, what kind of a dick would make such a huge deal out of.. oh, that kind"
posted by Space Coyote at 1:47 PM on July 31, 2004

andrew, whether you thought he was using the word wrong (or not a real word), could you not just have said, "I think you used the word wrong. Check here for proper use." and linked--or, even better, sent a polite email? "Get a frigging education" was pretty lame, no?
posted by dobbs at 2:24 PM on July 31, 2004

sorry - the tone wasn't meant to be that harsh (i posted other comments in the thread), but i guess the flippancy failed to come across...
(i'm not sure lame is the right word tho')

I wish more people would announce their dispositions upon their user names. It makes my marginalizing their opinions that much more efficient.

For instance, instead of BlueTrain, I would have chosen "Smarmy Fuck".

You know, it's really funny--I was going to comment in that other thread that bringing up "derogations" was really probably one of the biggest "derogations" I could imagine, but it felt a bit snarky over there.

Now, though, that we're in meta-mode, I feel much more comfortable...WTF?? If you're trying to figure out what works or not, it's not working.

I sing opera at the top of my lungs during sex. Is that a derogation of something or not, is all I want to know.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 6:04 PM on July 31, 2004

Inconsiderate is what it is--a derogation of the entire social contract, in other words.
posted by y2karl at 6:11 PM on July 31, 2004

The whole point is that...

Oh bloody hell. Now you've gone and brought Seth onto the scene. Damn you, wendell!

NORTH Hollywood, people. I'm working on a whole new website based on the distinction. Besides, I'm not laying claim on any territory larger than metro Lisbon.

And I was being chatty and trivial on MetaFilter way back before Miguel started trying to teach Carlos English.

stavros, you're busted. You don't live in S. Korea, you're in the apartment right above mine.

As for Seth, the management of wendell accepts no responsibility for other MeFites with handles that may or may not be real first names.

Thanks, q, for the "Google define" link from the other thread.
But no thanks for the graphic.

There, that's better.

You know, I really like you, Wendell. You're so good-humored, even when people are snarking on your ass. It's an admirable quality.

But this was really kinda a stupid MeTa post, though.

What is this MeTa post about? All I see is a bunch of people having oral sex while Dobbs spins wax.

Fortunately, your opinions are already plenty easy to marginalize entirely on their own merits.
