Minneapolis meetup and photos August 2, 2004 10:30 PM   Subscribe

I've posted the photos I took of the meetup last night in Minneapolis. Also, no better place to do it than here, so where should we meet/are we meeting at for the 14th?

Also, I'm sure mrbula's photos will be much more interesting, as he was more active with his camera, and has shots of the lawn bowling.

Nice pictures of a spiffy group, badmofo. I could swear I've met trharlan before.

Why is Homer Simpson "mister sparkle"?
posted by hama7 at 6:40 AM on August 3, 2004

It's not Homer Simpson. It's the result of the merging of two differen't companies' logos (one a lightbulb, the other a fish), which happens fortuitously to resemble Homer.

a nice motley crowd there--and is lawn bowling bocce?

Dammit. I want to make it to one of these Mpls meetups, but my weekends are always packed. Would anyone be interested in some sort of MetaFilter Minneapolis Power Lunch during the work week some time? If enough of us work in or near downtown (or Uptown, or, heck, anywhere; I've got easy freeway access), that might be a workable solution. Although it doesn't really allow for as much drinking...

My girlfriend's name is Liz, but she is, sadly, without an account 'round these parts. Thanks for posting the pictures, angrymodem.

(I'd also like to note that I am normally clean-shaven these days, but I'm growing the facial hair for a karaoke appearance tonight. I'll be singing a country song, and I want to have bitchin' sideburns and a fu manchu moustache.)

Okay, I updated the gallery with her name (and fixed your username on there too).

I can't believe I wrote "differen't".

Sorta. The 'bowls' aren't spherical and one side is heavier than the other, resulting in a curve if you bowl it right, or an utter disaster if you don't.

The Mr. Sparkle t-shirt was the only redeeming factor of our side trip to the Mall of America. Got-dayum, that place is creepy. Liz and I both wanted to go for the "eww, gross!" factor, both of us being mall-haters, and we were not disappointed on that score.

My hair was not cooperating that day.

And Ben is my brother (and esch's friend), and he's not a Metafilter user, in case anyone was wondering.

Thanks for that great segue, neckro... Where are we meeting on the 14th?

St. Paul is nice and we haven't gone there yet. How about:
  • The Liffey, downtown across from the Xcel Energy Center, or
  • W.A. Frost's, on Selby, with a neat patio, or
  • Fabulous Fern's, also on Selby, which has NTN trivia, or
  • Yarusso Bros., in the Eastside 'hood (Payne Ave) which has cheap (and good) Italian food and Bocce Ball
I'd probably go for the Liffey, but then again I'm a sucker for Irish bars.

My only qualm with St. Paul is I am currently sans car, and getting to St. Paul from my area by bus is sort of a hassle. But if the majority wants St. Paul, I'll definitely work something out.

Great pictures!

Also, for a Mpls suggestion, how about the downtown Buca's? For larger groups, a round, talk-friendly table can be reserved.

Irish Bars: Keegan's is just off of Univeristy and Hennepin and has really, really good food and music pretty much every night. Also: Gigundous tables and booths, and Boddington's on tap.

Zosia - if we end up in St. Paul, get ye to Lyn-Lake and you can ride with me if you like.

esch made the suggestion of grilling or bowling, as well. (which I think is fucktabulous, since it would be cheaper as well)
posted by angry modem at 7:18 PM on August 4, 2004

Nathan_teske: Thank you, if we end up in the St. Paul area, I'll take you up on that.

I like all of the suggestions. Bowling would be fun, but I don't know how well it would be for chatting and getting to know each other, especially if there's a lot of us and we have to split up lanes. Grilling, on the other hand, is an excellent idea. But I like Keegan's, too. So, I guess I'm no help.

Two comments:

1) Great photos.
2) I actually have more hair than that.

Re: Buca.

Ew ew ew. I'll go to Minneapolis if I have to (hell, I work here), but rest assured I'm not going back to that hell hole.

And you know how I feel about hell holes!

Heh. No Buca then. How about nathan_teske's suggestion of Keegan's?

Grilling Grilling Grilling Grilling! But only because I don't know anything about drinking establishments in Minneapolis, and I like being outside. Then again, the weather could be shitty.

I'm totally a bad person to keep chiming it because I don't really care where we go, but I want to keep the thread alive. So. How about this. Why don't we figure out who all is coming the 14th and then see what would be more plausible -- grilling or a restaurant. So, uh, who can make it the 14th?

Also, should we move this to a wiki, maybe? I'm sure this thread is going to be pushed off the page any second now.
