Yeah, they seem to only be for people who aren't logged in.
Which is weird, since I think logged in users generate more load on the server.

Someone mentioned it in the last "how to make money" thread that I should try subjecting non-logged in folks to an extra ad, so I tried it out. There has only been one taker so far.

Ah, this is about things that non-logged-in users see. That explains my confusion. Sorry to intrude.

But wouldn't that be an incentive if you offered this site as a subscriber thing, or even offered new logins anymore? Isn't it better to slug people with logins with the ads and leaving it clear for others?

Well, it'll let mathowie make a little extra money off the huge number of readers get daily, without annoying the people who spend lots of time here posting threads and comments. Not so sure about putting them on the thread pages as well as the front page, though... seems a little unnecessary.

The argument against showing logged in folks is two-fold: it gives an incentive to get an account (which I'll eventually get to offering), and it also doesn't annoy the people that contribute to the site.
Now that I think about it, I'd be happy to allow members to turn off the google ads completely, I just need to code an on-off feature.

Um. The small ad - currently Thinkum/that bike thing - does it look a wee bit rubbish being smaller than the rest of that sidebar?
Might it not look better if it were all the same width?

This is another reason why it would be nice to login to MeFi via a Sidekick (which will hopefully be possible in the upcoming Sidekick2 browser). The new ads appear above any comments and so a user now has to scroll down a few pages to reach the main content.
