way to go on scaring the new guy September 5, 2004 10:05 PM   Subscribe

Now that we have all read and agreed with Taz's post, lets put it into practice: User posts first Front-page Post. The Post is great and well-received. New user even explains where he got it from (not that he had to). Everything's great so far so...let's call him out because it appeared in some older comments AND let's accuse him of outright stealing it! Good work!

yeah. but with any luck, we can actually drive these people posting "interesting" things away, and have all-snark, all-the-time!

ramakrishna, don't let it get you down. you did good.

I think my dislike of "via" links is vindicated. If you encourage them, eventually they somehow become required, and people start adding them for you. Also, they're still pointless.

I saw the older comment link a few months (?) back and was still thrilled to see this -- it's such a fascinating story, and the interview and articles that got linked to went much more in-depth than the Wikipedia entry. Excellent post.

The other interesting thing is the drift of the "don't double post" rule to the "don't double post anything that's ever been mentioned in comments" territory...

I've also seen this w/ regard to self-linking: the rules appear to say self-linking to something relevant in your comments is fine, just don't do it as a front page post. But I've seen a minor callout or two over the former.

It would seem not only are we telling people not to walk on the good carpet, we're telling them not to walk on the floor.

The fact that someone gets "jitters" from posting on the front page for the first time is illustration enough that some of us can really be a bunch of panty-waisted, motherfucking, nitpicking, jackal-suited, anal-retentive, jackbooted, cocksucking assholes.

Reklaw's logic at work:

via links are bad because someone will jump on you for via'ing a different site than the one they found it on. So you should just horde your sources.

Reklaw on GPL: The GPL is bad because someone might not co-operate, so everyone should just give up that expectation entirely and use the BSD licence.

At least he's consistent, even if the actual logic is still baffling.

As for the post in question, it's one of the best of the day, and I'm glad it was posted.

vacapinta et al - the post was excellent (I particularly enjoyed the "How I found it" spiel at the beginning) and for those who don't remember Petrov's mention last time I am sure it was new. No disrespect was intended - in fact the point of linking to the previous thread was to highlight comments made by others last time round.

I can't believe about this guy Stanislav Petrov! This is the most amazing, astounding, incredible, astonishing thing I have ever heard in my life!!! The more places this is referenced the better, everyone should know this astonishing story (assuming it is a true story, which I am assuming.) Given the fact that I missed even the FPP, suggesting that mentioning it in a comment does justice to the weight of this incredible story is insane!!!

The jitters ... they're supposed to go away after posting for the first-time?

As someone who rarely posts, I do get jitters (even when I'm just posting an innocuous comment.) Some people can bet utter jerks.

Not all of us read MonkeyFilter. Some of us don't even know what it IS, or (for that matter) give a fuck.

nitpick:
We haven't all read, and haven't all agreed with taz's post, it appears to me.

Longbaugh quite courteously, even shamefacedly pointed readers to a previous conversation about this guy (we could be proud that this amazing man has been mentioned on Mefi before - not feel dirty about pointing it out, then getting called on that) for which I was grateful.

Briank, whom you characterise as accusing ramakrishna of "stealing the link" (I think I've got a good case that Britney Spears is stealing air, but hey? Do I make a fuss about it?), got slapped down by the posters in that thread (as was appropriate).

Wasn't that sufficiently self-policed?

Blue Stone ... no. They're not supposed to get them. People shouldn't be afraid to share.

I had the jitters every single time I made a post until my first MeTa callout. That cured 'em right quick.

What Cruch said. Posting should not incur panic attacks.

I'm pretty damn sure it's bad karma to get all picky-snicky on ramakrishna's ass, especially on his first post. You might be reborn as bacteria in a sacred cow's colon.

The FPP writeup sucked!

With no expository text whatsoever, I read it and passed right by to the next without clicking on any of its links.

I only clicked on it from this callout, and guess what! The 'more inside' also says absolutely nothing.

Bad FPP! BAD! BAD! BAD! BAD! BAD!

Get over it kids.

I called him out, people pointed out I was wrong because he did mention it. Life goes on.
