We should do something with user# 20000 November 18, 2004 2:19 PM   Subscribe

What with the flood of signups, user# 20000 is coming right up. Matt, I think you should auction or raffle it off for charity, or do something fun with it.

Related to new signups: was there any momentum with the idea of "sponsoring" logins for people where $5 was a hardship? Hopefully some people outside the US?

theora55 - do you work in marketing or something? ;)

I'm up for sponsoring people. emails to the usual.
Although this doesn't include Americans. Even though your Economy is in a state.
As for user #20,000 - that's a fantastic idea. An ebay auction would be the way to go.

Good idea, let's auction it off for charity. seriously.
I offer 20 bucks

So how much has Metafilter already made today? +$3000?

If we're going to place status levels on user numbers, then I reserve the right to refer to everybody greater than 15k as "young whelp". Plus massage rights.

I wonder what the 20000 user would get... any guesses anyone? I guess it depends where the money's going, but I'm sure it could garner a fair bit of cash.

I'm new and I won't need to ask what '.' means. I read y6y6y6's words. Are there any other sources I should read in order to avoid annoying others and embarrassing myself?

in order to avoid annoying others
I've only got one word for you.
Vowels.
oh and the wiki.
So that's two words.

Actually, that's five words.

Why would anyone pay real hard cash over and above $5? They won't get extra privileges, so..isn't it a small market, therefore no real premium...

No, I'm missing something, right? I didn't study economics.

salmacis and mdn are about the only "round"-numbered users with a substantial number of contributions.

Maybe all those nice round numbers aren't so keen after all?

That's odd.

Maybe we could delete some of those unused round-number accounts to improve server speed? </jacktard>

It's coming right up. As of now, we're up to 18750 or so. Anybody want to run a pool on when we'll hit 20000? No, I'm not in Marketing. I just like seeing my user# look smaller by comparison, and the new user signups have injected some badly needed fun into the joint.
