I can't comment or post November 19, 2004 9:48 AM   Subscribe

A MeFi newbie question. I tried deleting cookies, but I can't find a way to post/comment nor can I find a way to get back to the references page. Is this a *feature* for New Users, or did I do something wrong on say the Preferences page, or what?

I think it's about a bug in the site but rather a bug in my brain.
This is the first blog I've ever tried to join, so....

My comment, by the way, had to do with today's reporter-got-
locked-up story. I wanted to say that in my non-lawyer opinion
I think would make a hell of a lot of difference whether the tape
was aired before the trial or after: after the trial it's just history,
but before the trial it might affect the accused's chances for a
fair trial. I think this is why they blur the "perps'" faces on COPS.
Are there any legal types here who can tell me whether this is
correct, while I'm here? Er, Now I wish I could correct "I think it's about a bug in the site but rather a bug in my brain" to "I think it's NOT [...]"

I need more coffee.

I'd recommend going here and contacting someone to help you out.

davy - don't use hard returns in the middle of a sentence. the text wrapping works out fine on its own.

(unless of course you meant that as some free-form sort of poetry, in which case <br /> away.)

also, preferences: click your own user name then choose "customize" from the menu at the top of the screen.

front page, your user name is on top. in a thread, user name is just above the comment box.

Your problem is that you are no longer logged in to the site. You need to log in / sign in.

Strong recommendation: Do not post that much text as a post. Have a sentence or two, and then post the rest of your post as your first comment. Use "More inside".

Welcome. Stick around it will be worth it.

"Your problem is that you are no longer logged in to the site."

Then how can he post here?

Sometimes just reloading the page (after it comes up right after you've logged in) will bring up the comment box, too, if it didn't all load the first time.

on the formatting thing, i guess you are copying and pasting from another editor or pressing "return" when you get to the end of the line. don't do either of those, until you understand better how things work.

instead, simply type in the grey box and let the computer move you to a new line when the first line fills up. when you come to the end of a paragraph hit return twice to give a blank line.

as far as your main problem goes - once you have deleted cookies, you need to log-in again. go to the front page and follow the "login" link. note that being logged-in to meta is not the same as being logged-in to mefi itself.

also, are you sure you deleted all cookies? they may be under metafilter.com, or under metatalk.metafilter.com or ask.metafilter.com.

i suspect that having only deleted some cookies and/or not re-logging in is the source of your problems.

no, i'm talking crap. logging in to one is the same as logging in to the other. so i suspect you have not deleted *all* cookies.

I had deleted all the cookies with "meta*" in 'em, reloaded, closed the Firefox tab and opened a new one, etc. What finally worked was doing all that *and* deleting whole damn "Exceptions" list in the Preferences/Cookies section (mostly denials anyway). So now I'm both grateful and embarrassed.

Now we'll see if I've got the formatting down. How's that look?
