Good lord. Three Warcraft MetaTalk threads in less than a month? posted by monju_bosatsu at 12:17 PM on December 4, 2004
Sorry - if it's totally inappropriate Matt can blow this thread away. I haven't seen a MeTa thread after the actual release of the game, just for the open beta. posted by LukeyBoy at 12:32 PM on December 4, 2004
It is the best place, but I think it was already done just recently.
I actually started a Tactics Arena Online clan recently called "MetaFilter" but then I never really recruited anyone or announced it here. It languished. Eventually I fell in with some other players and joined their clan instead.
However, the weird thing is that the only way to un-join a clan which you created, and of which you are the leader, is to appoint someone new the leader. So I basically had to dump the clan on some unsuspecting newbie. I began inviting clan-less players like crazy, hoping to find someone who would be excited to join any clan, even one with no members and a weird name.
Eventually, I did drop it on someone, a total stranger, and I noticed after that that a few other invites had been accepted too. Then, the next day, I noticed that lots of other people I hadn't even invited had suddenly joined clan MetaFilter. It had taken on a life of its own. And for all I know, there's a thriving community of 12-year-old Malaysians playing under the Clan MetaFilter name.
Ah well. Sorry, Matt. Trademark infringement and all. posted by scarabic at 12:39 PM on December 4, 2004
TAO - you can play for free. Requires Flash. posted by scarabic at 12:40 PM on December 4, 2004
It is not the best place. "Metafilter gatherings" is for in-the-flesh meetups, not (as far as I know) for "Hey, let's all play a game!" And the MeTa page is too full of bullshit already.
Furthermore, you kids get out of that yard!

Well, if you say it's for "in the flesh' meetups, then okay. I never knew that was a rule. If by playing a video game together people can extend their community experience here to somewhere else, I think that's valid. I'm guessing you don't play games online, and think this is poppycock. Fair enough. But some of us do.

languagehat, are you seriously complaining about a thread about an in-game meet-up when there were like ten ridiculous threads about fake meet-ups last night?

Yeah..not that I'm actually participating in any of these right now, but I've got to ask: If not here, where?
Making a rule that restricts part of an online community to "in the flesh" only seems kind of ironic...I'm just sayin'. posted by LairBob at 4:03 PM on December 4, 2004
I don't see a problem with this post. Metatalk has had dozens of much less useful posts in the last two weeks. A gathering is a gathering regardless of if it's 'in the flesh', creating an everquest clan, or whatever. I reserve the right next year to use Metatalk to get my online fantasy football league together. posted by Arch Stanton at 4:15 PM on December 4, 2004
And I can't remember what server I'm on. I'm in Pacific PVP, whatever server has "wolf" in it (maybe frostwolf is the name). Right now I only have a human warrior named "Coldvein", and I'm only level 17. I haven't been able to play this week because of a deluge of papers I have to write. But I'll be playing a lot in the next month or so if anyone wants to. posted by The God Complex at 4:21 PM on December 4, 2004
Are the overcrowding problems with the servers fixed yet? That's what I've been reading about. posted by Ethereal Bligh at 4:22 PM on December 4, 2004
They're improving. I generally plate late in the wee hours of the morning, anyway, so I don't really notice. They doubled server sizes and are now trying to disperse the crowds amongst the new servers.
Plus if you signed up on the 23rd they added an extra four days of free time on the end of the first month to make up for server latency issues.
Hey, fishfucker! Willya look at what these damn kids have done to my door?

I have a Lvl 20 Night Elf Druid on Durotan named Elftron.
I also have a lvl 4 Tauren named Cowtron. I'm thinking of making a Dwarf named Dwarftron. posted by hughbot at 8:08 PM on December 4, 2004

I'm playing a Level 8 gnome warlock named 'Inuuqati' on Windrunner - where I get my tiny evil ass handed to me every 10 minutes or so because the mountains disorient me, and I run into a pack of wolves.

No crowding issues at all. Server's running great. posted by y6y6y6 at 1:51 AM on December 5, 2004
I second the lack of crowding issues.
I think there's a small, but incredibly vocal community of "Guild Kiddies", for lack of a better term, who all wanted to play on the same few servers. I think this is where all the talk of overcrowding is coming from. posted by hughbot at 9:02 AM on December 5, 2004
Yikes! I didn't just start two sentances in a row with "I think", did I? posted by hughbot at 9:03 AM on December 5, 2004
I think you did. I think that if you hadn't called attention to it, no one would have even noticed. I think you're being to hard on yourself. I think. posted by crunchland at 10:26 AM on December 5, 2004

The PvP Mountain server with an apostrophe in it...Only way I can remember what servers I'm playing on. Playing Zealeuswa, a lvl 14 gnome warlock, and Zealeusro, a lvl 12 human rougue. Also have a night elf hunter and undead mage somewhere on the eastern server with an apostrophe which I left because of server lag. posted by jmd82 at 2:30 PM on December 5, 2004
