Little tear...

Just wanted to point this out, and show some love for one of the "good" ones whose contributions to this site will be missed.

I really liked dobbs' contributions, his writing (which I subscribed to) and his take on things. We emailed a few times, years ago.

I can see his point, in a way. I waited a long time to join and the place is certainly different to when I first started reading. It could just be growing pains. Time will tell.

Whatever. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I just looooove when people have to be all melodramatic about leaving an online community. Don't like it? Just leave. Goodness gracious.

::See? Negativity! Now dobb's leaving was not in vain.::

BTW, he lives here.

Bugger. Bugger, bugger, bugger.

BUGGER.

Preview: I think TPS was being a touch sarcastic.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 7:27 PM on December 28, 2004

You don't think it's at least a little melodramatic? I dunno, I think any sort of announcement is, even a relatively calm one, is.

(hehe, PinkStainlessTail, I am a sarcastic person, but I wasn't being one here, hehe.)

Damn! C'est toujours les meilleurs qui partent and all that. He seemed pretty cool. Of course, I confused him with dhoyt, so that shows how much I know...

dobbs sent me four CD mixes for Xmas. They weren't what I would normally listen to, but they opened my eyes (ears?) to some different stuff.

Bon voyage, dobbs!
posted by mr_crash_davis at 7:30 PM on December 28, 2004

It's not an announcement. It's a note on his profile page. Your response demonstrates his point pretty nicely though.

I just got the 4-disc set today. What a work of art. Let's not lose anymore good souls.

Aw, man! See, this is why nobody comes over anymore.

Miss you already, dobbs.
posted by me3dia at 8:25 PM on December 28, 2004

It's not an announcement. It's a note on his profile page.

These can be melodramatic, though: when I took a little break I had quite the sophomoric "I can't be trusted to contain my anger anymore" type message that has mercifully vanished into the ether.

Dobbs', however, is not particularly melodramatic. And, I repeat myself,

bugger.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 8:26 PM on December 28, 2004

What? That's it. What a lame way to go. He should have started a metatalk thread, and then went crazy in it. That's how you gotta roll.
posted by chunking express at 8:26 PM on December 28, 2004

hmm, this isn't good. but understandable, what with the new heights of assholery this joint has reached recently. bye dobbs, see you in the funny papers ! erm, but not at the movies ;-)

holy kittens, who puked pepto-bismol all over pinksuperhero's userpage...?

I'm fairly sure he's not going to be on Metafilter's porch, but that, in fact, he's going to a different house altogether (maybe one where people use 'preview' to check for coherent English when making unwarranted insults behind each other's backs).

I didn't actually know Dobbs, I'm just, you know, saying.

dobbs, you're always welcome to come back. I for one will miss you.

Ha! at amberglow.

Seriously, enough with the I'm leaving announcements. They're so 2001.
posted by adampsyche at 9:00 PM on December 28, 2004

Dammit. I hate it when a smart person willing to engage leaves the room. The lights get just a little bit darker.

I didn't agree with him all the time, which is generally a good thing. I understand where he's coming from, though. There is a lot of negative here.

Nite, dobbs. See you around, I hope.

Nah, he's just trying to go cold turkey. He is doomed to failure.

Now that Matt has re-opened registrations its much too tempting for him to just make a new username and continue to participate without the weight of his older username. See if you can spot his new reincarnation.

we really need a list of who has a new name. It was sooooo easy when it was just konolia, and sir walsingham.

I'm going to miss Bakiwop as well. But, perhaps 111 can come back from the dead and fill that void in my soul.

To hold some one to to some pristine standard because of something or other which they may have written in a moment's passion, then posted, and then forgotten is petty not at all beyond belief here. We get drunk and think we are God. We fall asleep, then wake to find all our names are writ in water.

All is forgiven. come back home.

Let that be our first and final motto.

I think I like dobbs. Hell, I'm a crappy fake-ass misanthrope -- I pretty much like everybody, when it comes down to it. But I can never remember who I had big fights with and who I didn't, let alone why. Story of my life.

Come back soon, when (as I hope and pray) the pisstide subsides again, dobbs. Even if I called you bad names in the heat of the moment sometime somewhen somethread.

Shenanigans! This is all just an ego-stroke ploy to get us to say how much we love you! Not I, sir!

kidding...

Never knew dobbs, but we crossed paths in a few threads, and I always enjoyed reading his stuff. His low-key dedication to finding actually interesting things is, really, what more of this place should aspire to. I hope he comes back, in one form or another.

Okay, I'm jealous of dobbs, cause this thread is TOTALLY like dying and getting to go to your own funeral. I hope someone e-mailed him about it.

...or am I the only person who would really like to go to their own funeral? I'm normal, right? *looks around, nervously*
