I've put up four superb photos from last night's NYC meetup.

Phew! You left out the initiation ceremony photos. I don't need the authorities on my ass again. Thanks.

And those turned out far better than mine did.

Plutor: "I've put up four superb photos"

Dude, way to break your arm patting yourself on the back! Four whole photos and man, Ansel Adams is probably quaking in his grave at the competition. /OTT

well, we don't go in for that fancy-shmancy photoshopping and filters and stuff like those shallow shallow people in SF. ; >
posted by amberglow at 4:26 PM on February 13, 2005

We're not shallow! It just looks that way because in those low-light conditions you don't get much depth of field!

What, no photos of our glorious Eastern European supper?

Oh man, I had some friends offer me some last-minute tickets to the Producers so I couldn't make it yesterday. Is there still going to be another meetup next weekend?
posted by turaho at 4:41 PM on February 13, 2005

Sad I couldn't make it, gang. I'd be up for next weekend- but could we have our meetup in a more central Manhattan location? I live in Astoria, and getting to the LES just takes a long time.

I live in Astoria, and getting to the LES just takes a long time.

I live at the last stop in Astoria and I was there in under an hour. Besides, below 14th Street is where all the action is.

I live at the second-to-last stop in Astoria and it takes about a half hour (including walking) most of the time.
posted by Captaintripps at 5:43 PM on February 13, 2005

This is starting to sound like a commute. Given the recent excitement up in Kingston, I'm almost tempted to move down to the Apple. But then I'd be spending all my loot on rent and not booze. Sigh...
posted by Smart Dalek at 5:54 PM on February 13, 2005

move down already--that's like the only exciting thing that's happened there in years. ; >

You can find cheap booze in New York City. You just need to know where to go (the Bohemia Hall, for instance).

Wait...Astoria MetaFilter members...Bohemia Hall...what's that idea tickling my brain?
posted by Captaintripps at 6:36 PM on February 13, 2005

I smell a very good idea coming on, Captaintripps- although should we wait until the weather is nice enough to sit outside?

Of course. I don't even think the Beer Garden is open yet. I think we've got enough members in the 1110* area code to cover it. Clearly the people from the other boroughs won't come to Deepest Darkest Queens**, but we can all have plenty of fun on our own.

**Deepest Darkest Queens for our purposes is a ten minute subway ride out of Manhattan.

getting to the LES just takes a long time.

Reminds me of the Seinfield episode when Elaine wanted to switch to a far more boring boyfriend just to save herself a couple of transfers on the subway.

So fess up... who's the person sporting the fro?
posted by Civil_Disobedient at 6:49 PM on February 13, 2005

Oh yea, the Beer Garden is closed, but the bar inside is open (was there last weekend, or the one before). And eff all the pancake biyatches* that won't come to Queens- more fun for us.

Ooh, dame brought cupcakes.

I dislike dame's mefi persona (and the feeling is mutual), we disagree often, but by all accounts she's delightful in person and well worth knowing. I don't know why I'm saying this, other than that I've seen a number of NY meetup photos, she's usually there, and I know people think well of her.

I'd also love the opportunity to meet amberglow and jonmc and buy them beers. That's not likely to happen so...keep the meetup photos coming. I enjoy them.

captaintripps thepinksuperhero: we had a meetup at the beer garden last summer. It was great to be able to stagger home on foot instead of navigating the subways.vidiot and the (sadly mia) chicobangs live in the 'hood as well.

some fivedollanoob. nice kid though. I referred to him as "Epstein," at one point, IIRC.

so come up, EB (and I bought the cupcakes--and sweettart hearts too!)

Art Garfunkel? he was cool : >

Whoo boy. The 'some fivedollanoob' comment is exactly why I chickened out, and I was just 'round the way ...

thinkpeice, it's an affectionate nickname, we welcomed all the noobs with open arms. and pygmy goats.

Carnal endeavour was being engaged in at the time of the meetup. Sorry folks.
posted by Captaintripps at 7:53 PM on February 13, 2005

I'm also at the end of the N line, but I continue to miss meetups like it's going out of style. *sigh*

On an aside, could anyone who took meetup photos from this weekend and has them on Flickr add them to the mefi group pool?

But I brought you to the cupcakes, Amberglow. So, like, I helped.

And you know what, Bligh, as jonmc once said, I am pretty much the same online and in the bar. So maybe that should tell you something. Or you could just leave off on commenting on me altogether.

I'm now envisioning dame as that infenal Shake 'N' Bake child.

billsaysthis: The "superb" part was meant as self-deprecating sarcasm, but that's easily mistaken for self-aggrandizing boasting, I understand.

Civil_Disobedient: The person with the fro is the well-named afroblanca, who until the meetup was unaware of both the grey and the green.

Yeah, man...that ASCII shit is like, so 1996 or something. GET WITH TEH CENTURY, D00D!

amber, I'm glad you got that joke, cause dame's probably too young to.

ok--help me find a new one : >

(she is, jon--i thought it was hysterical tho--i've heard that Katie Couric actually was that kid in the commercials when she was young)

Yea, no thanks for the pygmy goat, it shit all over my apartment, and scared my dog. I'll only go to the next meetup if you don't make me take livestock home.

So...in the background of the 'shoutout' pic -- who is the guy in black? Is he by any chance named Jose? 'Cos I think I might know him.
