Spellcheck Bug May 14, 2005 6:36 AM   Subscribe

Malicious Insects: Starting today, as soon as I click Spell Check when posting a comment with Firefox (version 1.03 in Fedora Core 3) my browser immediately crashes. This didn't occur yesterday or previously in the same environment. Also, doesn't happen on my Windows XP machine with Firefox 1.03.

Now that I think about it since I'm on Fedora Core 3 instead of Windows or a Mac, I'll probably just have to live with it.

It's a feature. Dictionaries and spell checkers are crutches for the unintelligent. Matt's currently working on the second part of his new vision on encouraging spelling and grammar on MeFi: Bitter old Catholic Nuns with wooden rulers.

I actually don't see this behaviour on Fedorca Core 3. I'm not at work right now so I'm not sure which Firefox version I'm using though.

Anyway, if you're using Firefox, the SpellBound extension is a much better spell-checking option. I actually started using it on Matt's recommendation from some earlier thread, and it's great.

Second the motion for SpellBound. It's nice being able to add your own words to the dictionary.

"There are no special system requirements beyond those to run your browser and it has been verified to work with Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2, and FreeBSD."

Yep. Spellbound's install is a bit of a pain in the ass but once it's there it's great. The engine needs a bit of work but it's yet another reason to never open IE again.

*sigh* okay, so I don't mention my OS when I post a bug? alrighty then.

Try downloading the latest Firefox and see if that fixes your problems (1.0.4).

Upgrading fixed it (of course) and thanks for the Spellbound recommend, will have to give it a try.

Not really sure about these weird attitudes about mentioning the OS I was on twice in my post. I have to use FC3 (better?) at work - nothing else is really an option.

If we have to explain why, you probably wouldn't understand the explanation.

Oh one of thooooose. The ole' "if you have to ask"... I suppose I just should've said I was using Mac OS X or Tiger or something, that would've met your approval?

Guess I'm used to filing real-life bug reports not a bug report in which you get snide remarks from dickheads.
