odd timing. i was just at that site. i have one photo there, for the mefimailswap, and i think it's not public. i need to post more photos, so that they notice me, and approve me. apparently. which i can't see me doing as i'm about to leave for the states and anyway i don't want to use the place except for the swap thing. so humph, i say. jessamyn, expect an email with a photo...
(frykitty, if you see this - i will reply to your last email but am still thinking)

I don't think I've been to flickr more than 2 or 3 times. Then again, my photography is still old-school film.

I don't use it- I don't think that my photos are of interests to anyone else and I don't care about your photos.

Mine, and oddly enough, even though I rarely use it, I was at a lecture at school the other day, where Michael Geist was giving a talk on "what's happening online" (groan) and he demonstrated flickr by going to a screenshot of the Ottawa tag - and there were my photos from the February MeFi/MoFi meetup. Got a good laugh out of the crowd by pointing out they were mine. Weird stuff.

I've only begun to use Flickr in the past week. Not much up yet, but will surely have many cat photos by the end of the summer. (Because isn't that what the internet's all about?)
posted by jdroth at 1:25 PM on June 19, 2005

This thread has been great. Thanks for the link to the group, mathowie, and kudos on the snarkback. *applause*

I've added a bunch of new contacts. I'm here in case anyone wants to see... very little at the moment, which should change if I can find the cable for my camera or my card reader, both of which are currently in hiding.
posted by Dreama at 1:49 PM on June 19, 2005

Nice uppercut, Matt.

Flickr's cool, I've got my pics up there but spend my time in groups like ActionDog, Poetry in Motion, 1-2-3, JPG Mag and there's always nice tags like Sexy, Beautiful, Funny and Illusion. Take a look at people's favorites too. Top-V and Top-F are good ways to find the most viewed and most favorited.
posted by fenriq at 1:51 PM on June 19, 2005

this is me, but I'll save you some time and direct link the best one (bonus for being a cat picture)
posted by nomad at 2:08 PM on June 19, 2005

I'm there, but I use it mostly for the RSS feed of my contacts' photos, so I can keep up with my friends.
posted by frykitty at 2:11 PM on June 19, 2005

Oh yeah, my best, also a cat picture.
posted by fenriq at 2:13 PM on June 19, 2005

I'm there, but unfortunately--speaking of cats--the fat, strange, disconcertingly humanoid Persian gets more hits than any of my favorite portfolio stuff.

I've heard it all from the flickr haters, but honestly, as someone who used to have a lot more time to take (and show and sell) photos before going back to school, it's exciting to have an audience and community of fellow enthusiasts again.

Hey mischief and fandango_matt: I am an analog luddite myself (save a few snapshots taken with the boyfriend's digital camera), and scan negs or actual (usually darkroom) prints. Another great group for people who shoot with pre-1980 cameras (I have 3 that qualify!) is "On Film and In Focus." Of course, if you have the relevant gear, the TLR group is good as well.

My metafilter user name is the same as the title of one of my photos (I would've probably used it as my flickr name too out of sheer laziness but the non-numbered version of it was already taken).
posted by availablelight at 3:31 PM on June 19, 2005

I use the same name but am not easy to find. I can be found here. I spend a lot of my time playing the role of kindergarten teacher as the most active admin of the largest group - FlickrCentral.
posted by vacapinta at 3:51 PM on June 19, 2005

Well, hell; as long as we're linking to our cat pictures . . .

I don't think I've been to flickr more than 2 or 3 times. Then again, my photography is still old-school film.

That's all I shoot as well, I either get it processed and scanned to CD or develop it myself. There's actually quite a large group of people who still use film on flickr me included.

You're either a responsible community member or a masochist.

votes for masochist ;)

I'm also on there but I don't have any actual photos, it's all abstract desktop background images that I've created over the years. No cats unfortunately.
posted by freshgroundpepper at 7:40 PM on June 19, 2005

This may be a stupid question, but do most people go for the pay membership? It doesn't seem like the free one lets you have very many photos at all? I can't seem to justify the yearly subscription, though...

D’oh! I should have assumed that. ¶ As an early sort-of-photoblogger, I was aware of Flickr but did not actually participate until recently. ¶ Personally, I think Flickr is a lot more interesting phenomonen than just being the latest kewl website (and it is cool), and I could go on at length about it. (And I probably will, but thankfully not here and now.)
