What ever happened to majcher's Genefilter? June 30, 2005 5:36 PM   Subscribe

What ever happened to majcher's Genefilter? It was the best thing to hit MeFi in 2003, and it was still being updated last November. I miss it terribly. If majcher can't or won't bring it back, can someone reproduce it?

I was mad about Genefilter! It would be wonderful if someone could pick it up again.

Agreed. I'd only posted about three comments when it last updated, so it's barely insightful at all. In fact, none of the five-dollar newbies really get much useful from it right now, and a good portion of them will be totally missing from it altogether.

Corollary question: How do Genefilter and the Metafilter stats get their info? Scraping? Is there some Mefi API or database dump that I'm unaware of? I've had a few ideas for mefi-related hacks that I haven't gotten to because scraping is morally repugnant boring to code.

It was truly fantastically supercool and stuff. I'm bummed it's gone. Perhaps we could ask nicely if majcher might want to open-source the code or something?

At the risk of causing everyone to scroll over my user name to see my user number, what was it? It just says closed on it now, and no note to say when the proprietor will be back.

Funny... I was just thinking about GeneFilter yesterday and went to play with it, only to find it "closed." Thanks for posting about it languagehat.

Omiewise, this thread is full of genefilter goodness.

I seem to recall some humorless throwback whining on here about how sentences he never wrote were coming up with his username on Google. I don't believe I finished that thread, and I can't find it now, but perhaps it induced majcher to take it down.

Oh Jesus. I sincerely hope that's not the case. If so, fuck that humorless throwback. What a dick.

Wow. As a $5 somewhat-newb, I must say that is utterly brilliant.

This is an old genefilter I saved for some reason, as an example.

*cries*

Won't somebody bring it back? The n00bs deserve their own genefiltered selves!

Goodness, this genefilter machine seems wonderful. I want one!

I had previously visited GeneFilter, while it was still up, and didn't understand what the heck was going on. It's sad to finally 'get' it, but not to be able to go view it in action.
