No Unicode Support for Tags July 29, 2005 9:04 PM Subscribe
I dig the new Unicode support and all, but Unicode does not work within tags.
Should it? What's the RFC on this? Um, I haven't read it. Hopefully, these days, it should. But I dunno.
Where's the q-signal?

This is a feature request, not a bug. And the tags are already cluttered enough with useless crap without people adding stuff like 找个地方去死.

It's really not my place to speak for mathowie, of course, but I know a bit about this.
After the tags debacle with injected HTML (which was, I confess, originally my idea - Stynxno was the one who ran with it because I had no FPPs to tag with), I suggested to mathowie that he kill off Unicode as well just in case. When EB created the duplicate quonsar account using Unicode, I all of a sudden realized that Matt probably left injected HTML open in nicks (also now blocked), in an ironic reversal of what happened with the tags system.
Put shortly, Unicode and HTML are both intentionally blocked from tags and nicks.

EB, quonsar is on sabbatical. No fair baiting him until he returns.

There are lots of subjects which tagging for would be useful that can't just be written with [a-z]. Not allowing unicode in usernames makes sense, as making two usernames that look the same but aren't to the software is considered an attack.
There's no reason for this to be an attack on tags though. There's nothing to be gained from making a post appear tagged as a certain term while it isn't, you can just not tag it as that in the first place.
