There's still plenty of poop. Sift through poop and you'll probably find stuff that isn't poop. Sift through more poop than you usually do and you'll find more good stuff. But you've still exposed yourself to more poop.

Eight so far and not a single one of 'em Newsfilter.
Standard disclaimer lest I be misinterpreted: not all Newsfilter posts are bad, just those that announce something that's widely reported anyway and bring no new information beyond what can easily be found in reports from major news sources.
Also, I think one only need look at yesterday's posts to put to rest for once and for all any notion that a large number of comments is indicative of a good post.

There were several worth checking out, but not many that really inspired real discussion. Also, there are a few so far today that are quite interesting.

Whats going on? It's clearly August 2nd, and people are still posting good links! Come on folks, I want to hear more about this Karl Rove and his friend Mr. George Bush, and their struggle against extremismTM. Please get back to posting the day's top story so we can all put our 2 cents and our one liners in.

That means nothing. Often the best posts will only garner a handful of comments.

fishfucker : "mefi's about the links, dogg. discussion is a byproduct."
Yeah, but discussion was one of the judging standards of this particular contest. Not the only standard, but one of them, so criticizing them for not inspiring real discussion is a valid criticism, within the context of the contest. Within the context of Mefi, disregarding the discussion, I agree with you completely, ff.
And I thought the "dressing like a zombie = sucking corporate cock" discussion was pretty interesting, but, being involved in it, my perspective is skewed.

mischief : "There was a contest?"
Yep. Not an official MeFi contest, but an unofficial personally sponsored contest on Metachat.

Well I'm not so sure it was this literal. My recollection was that anastasiav would use commentary by members as an adjunct to her decisionmaking. It's all academic now of course but I'm pretty sure that it was more of an aid than a specific judging criteria.

I dunno, it lists number of comments and content of comments as "objective metrics" (though, to be honest, I don't see how you could consider the content of comments to be objective instead of subjective). But, yeah, I'm not saying that lack of comments would be a contest-breaker, just that, unlike usual, where "Mefi is about the links, not the comments", in this specific case, comments had more importance than usual. Calling them a "judgement standard" was probably overstating it.
