No contribution from me, but I enjoyed reading the different thoughts from men and women members.

44733 was the pretty girl thread from Sept 1 2005, it generated 208 comments.

Hasn't this been asked before? For those who don't know, the best thread in the history of Metafilter, now and forever, will always be the following:
A real man would say, "Take a knife, quonsar, and face Minya to the death." If they would not say that, they could at least say, "We'll shock both of you with electiricity until quonsar admits his lies." I would accept either decision.
Metafilter should have retired a champion after this thread.

The one about porn in the woods. I had no idea that was a widespread thing.

Okay. Awkward.

Fuck, I can't believe I missed that thread. Thanks, DaShiv, although now I'm all put out that I couldn't participate.

My favorites are the ones where you type up, like, the perfect comment, press Post, and I give you an error.

My favorite thread that I've participated in was Son of 9622, though that dead body one definitely wins as my favorite thread to read.

What can I say? I'm extremely morbid.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 10:13 AM on September 18, 2005

In the top five, definitely.

I don't see how, Alex, that one was pretty straightforward. Idiot shuts down IRC channel, users regroup elsewhere, two people who clash on channel yell briefly at each other. It wasn't especially entertaining, and nothing of significance happened.

If I were you, I'd find it funnier when someone loses his shit so badly they get temp-banned and then carry on with the argument both on IRC and other websites.
posted by Ryvar at 10:44 AM on September 18, 2005

Sorry, loses their shit, since a gender-specific pronoun indicates I have a specific individual in mind.

This was posted on MeCha recently, which is the first time I saw it. It's got everything- spooky set-up, amazingly varied responses, lovely moving resolution.
The dead body post was great, too.

JJ: I am wondering, how many threads that fall over the front page continue to get comments?

Jim: I don't know but it's a very interesting thought. Let's see how long we can keep this up before someone stumbles across our thread.

I had never read the Swirly Spherical Angel-Ball thread that maryh linked to until just now, and I have to second her nomination as one of the best threads. It moves through fear, humor, confusion, confession, loss, redemption. And it contains putzface_dickman's inspiring example on how to be a good father.

My favorite one of all time:
You're in the middle of an arena. You're being attacked by 5 year olds who will stop at nothing to kill you. How many can you take on before they overcome you?

Why is it that this one and the bear one that mgl links above are so much fun?

I read that body disposable thread after the fact and I really wish I could add my two cents because I have some great ideas :[

Other than that, anything involving ShoutingThomas gets a Y from me.

Scarabic's comment in The Dead Body thread is one of my all-time faves.

I had the most fun with Ed's Cinco: thread.

This one really stuck with me too.

karmaville. Thanks--I totally missed that one; I don't think I've laughed out loud so much in a very long time.

My favorite, because it got me hooked on Metafilter, was back in March or April of 2001; some hosting company had stolen the look of Metafilter for its web site. A Metafilter mob (smaller than than now), promptly went on the attack, and the company apologized. And hopefully sued the designer bigtime!

I really wish I'd been around for the dead body thread because scarabic's answer is messy and impractical and there are much more elegant ways to dispose of one's victims.
