MeFi on Daily Show? October 20, 2005 8:49 AM   Subscribe

Daily Show shoutout to MeFi? During last night's show, Jon Stewart punctuated a piece on 24-hour news channels with the timeless phrase "They...have cameras!" Was it a wink at this piece of MetaFilter history? The clip is here ("Baghdad Legal"), and the words are spoken at the 1:25 mark. You decide!

I think this is just an example of associative thinking on your part.

Do any of the writers of The Daily Show post here? Or read this site? Speak now!

At what price did this information come by? AT WHAT PRICE??

Also, the studio's background is blue. These connections cannot be ignored.

I am 100% positive it had nothing to do with MeFi. He was just pointing out that that's basically all they had. No information on anything, just cameras with which to film it.

Though he did tell Ed Helms he was a fuckwit and he should get his own blog.

Dios, this is kind of what I thought too, which is why I decided to sleep on it and re-watch the clip. But I couldn't be the only one who did a double-take upon hearing it last night!

Jesus Christ dios you are such a stupid troll I can't even believe how stupid you are and I hate you.

No, wait: it's probably just associative thinking on contessa's part.

I did a double take, but then realized that of course that was the simplest way to phrase what they were saying.

SeizeTheDay : "This is what passes as humor these days, eh Optimus?"

I actually found that pretty funny.

Okay, I did a double-take, too, but there's no doubt it was a coincidence. Although I did notice a strange tagline in a teaser for tonight's episode:

The Daily Show: Stealing from Metafilter since October 19th, 2005
posted by grateful at 10:12 AM on October 20, 2005

I also did a double-take. Although, if they were really trying to do a callout, they would have probably been more obvious about it.

If Jon plays the "summon Bevets" card tonight, we'll know for sure.

Perhaps we need to start a campaign to get MeFi mentioned on The Daily Show? Perhaps we can do something flattering for Colbert.

If you play the audio backwards, you can distinctly hear him say "welcome back quonsar."

Heh, I was startled by that when I was watching it too, but I just don't think it was a shoutout. Funny, though.

I decide 'No'.

how on earth did you remember that comment? it was funny, but it wasn't "remember it four years later and distinctly associate any mention of a farily innocuous phrase with it" funny.

I'm still waiting for a "this [X]... it vibrates?" joke to think that anyone famous reads us. (besides adam savage.)

Screw the cameras. The important thing is that we have mammeries.

Uh, yeah, actually, it was.

Or more accurately, no matter how intrinsically funny the comment was at the time, it's become well established as a crucial piece of Mefi lore. That's how on earth we remembered it.

Consider that perhaps maybe .001% of the US population even knows what Metafilter is. The answer is no.

Well, there is certainly reason to believe that the Daily Show staff is aware of MetaFilter.

i don't watch the daily show daily but i swear i've heard stewart make some other comment in the past few months that was uniquely metafilterish, though i imagine someone here would have caught that...
posted by troybob at 12:42 PM on October 21, 2005

Yeah their humor and topic choices are somewhat metafilterish at times. Could just be like minds. Jon Stewart apparently loves Doom and I believe Colbert is a big LOTR fan. Etc
posted by Smedleyman at 1:23 PM on October 21, 2005

that would be the other steve.
and their emmy nomination montage was of the bunch in front of their computers (or not) and various sites. no, metafilter was not one of them. yes, they know of it. yes, that is all. no, i will not clarify.
