Bad post, worse thread.

Yeah, but without that thread we wouldn't have gotten semmi's response to it--and today would just totally not have been worth it, otherwise.

I say worse post, bad thread. But to each their own. And nobody has mentioned the cups yet, so that's something, right?

Maybe we should find a way to ship the Islamicists, the Zionists and the Christian fundies to the moon so they can fight it out amongst themselves away from the rest of us.

We should probably start with persia.

The user, of course.

My personal favourite part of the thread was just how quickly it got around to debating whether or not Israel should exist. Because, you know, they're troublemakers.

Damn cups.
posted by Balisong at 9:46 PM on November 3, 2005

Amberglow, I think that it was the secret Jewish conspiracy angle that persia was not-too-subtly pushing in a FPP that created the mean. The evil influence described to Italian "Zionist doctors" in bumping off people who dared convert to Islam and such was a tad much, even for winking insinuation.

On preview -- the cup barrier is broken. Rejoice!

That sentiment began in the topic of the FPP itself.

What? There's nothing mean about insisting that a cabal of Zionist doctors assassinates Muslims.

I love amberglow's unique combinaton of hypersensitivity to the puppy-kicking, baby-eating atrocities perpetrated by the American Satan and his Zionist Lapdogs, and complete immunity to hateful psychotic fantasies coming from those he's defending.

That sentiment began in the topic of the FPP itself.

Well, from your post in the thread we know exactly how you feel on this issue. Why waste words, though? Go down there and do something about it.

Thank you all for your hospitalities and gentleness!

What did I do wrong from your point of view?

I don’t care if some Jewish people here try to push me out, but I want to let you know I'm not against Jews, I myself have Jewish friends. What I have an aversion to is Zionism. Jewish people are not equal to Zionists.

posted by loquax at 8:35 AM on November 4, 2005

Matt (or Jessamyn), I see that you've deleted a double-post from this morning, so you guys are around. If you're reading this, what's the reason behind leaving this post up? Beyond any offensiveness, it's a Reuters link, some bizarre photos, and a half-baked conspiracy theory (I think, the whole thing is pretty incoherent). That, plus the editorializing in the post is more than enough for a deletion, isn't it?
posted by loquax at 8:51 AM on November 4, 2005

I should add, I don't really care either way, I'd be happy to leave it up so that future generations know of persia and his teachings, but it doesn't really seem to fit with past deletion policy, as I understood it.

"I myself have Jewish friends..."

How can anyone not know by now to avoid saying that kind of phrase at all costs?

It's odd: I do think it could be a valid defense if the person isn't a bigot, but that's what they're trying to prove, so it isn't helpful. If a bigot says it, they're being patronizing in a way that underscores their bigotry.

Maybe "patronizing" isn't the right word. I think the vibe I get from this statement and the similar vibe I get from bigots that are trying to claim they're not bigots, is that every statement they make subtly (or not so subtly) demonstrates how much they truly do see that group as other, as quite unlike themselves. That's the tell.

persia, if you don't have a dislike for Jews, why are you so opposed to them having a state? Rabid anti-zionism can't be completely divorced from a tinge of anti-semitism, in my opinion. I can understand (and support) the demand for a Palestinian state, but to be so against Israel in toto indicates indiscriminate hate. That such things are posted here is a discredit to the site, in my opinion. I don't think we need links on this site which boil down to hatred.

the ralliers called for the withdrawal of the Zionists from the occupied Palestine.

No they are calling for Israel to be wiped off the map. Offensive to me as a human being. You?

They also called for the Italian government's explanation on the Nov 15, 2000 assassination of the Eduardo Agnelli suspiciously at the hand of the zionists.

This sentence states that this person was "assassinated" by "the zionists" as fact, where it is actually speculation and rumour.

What zionists, by the way? All of them? Well, I heard the moslems blew up the WTC, how do you like them apples? I also call for moslems to get out of occupied chechnya and bosnia. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate moslems, only the ones who live where I don't want them to live, and who are uppity enough to think the deserve it.

On preview: See you!

"Matt's been asleep at the deletion switch lately."
Yeah, ever since he quit his job to work here full time...

And Dios: "if you don't have a dislike for Jews, why are you so opposed to them having a state?"

I'm opposed to any religious basis for statehood, really. Just as I'm opposed to ethnic nationalism. But hey, that's me.
posted by klangklangston at 1:13 PM on November 4, 2005

klangklangston: so, for clarification, you don't support autonomy that can be construed as ethnic(Kurdish, Palestinian, etc.) and you don't support autonomy that can be construed as religious (Judaism). I guess you are just in favor of arbitrary political boundaries?

If that's the case, your consistency is refreshing and I applaud it, even if I don't agree with you.

well, the british state has neither an ethnic basis (we are, as they say, a multicultural society these days) nor a religious one (I can be jewish/catholic/ sikh/atheist/whatever, and british). That is also the case in the US isn't it?

I'm unsure as to what you're surprise is based on.
posted by dash_slot- at 4:55 PM on November 4, 2005

dios : "Rabid anti-zionism can't be completely divorced from a tinge of anti-semitism, in my opinion."

Personally, I'm neither opposed to religious bases, nor ethnic bases, but to displacement of people. Didn't like what Europeans did with the Americas, don't like what the Europeans and Americans did with Israel.

I'm white. I certainly have no hatred for white folks. And if some group of white folks got descriminated against, largely decimated, and driven out of the countries where they had lived, that would really suck. But if the UN then decided: "Ok, these guys are Aryan, let's just seize a chunk of India, kick out all the Indians living there, and create an Aryan homeland for these displaced people", I'd think that really sucked. And if the white folks then started grabbing more and more outlying areas to expand their nation, I'd think that sucked.

What I don't understand is why I can be opposed to this example and not be racist, but if I'm opposed to the very similar Israeli issue, I'm somehow de facto racist.

Yeah, not in this one. So what the hell are you on about?

"I guess you are just in favor of arbitrary political boundaries?"
Well, geographic ones come in handy too, like mountains, rivers and islands. And I think that shared cultural beliefs are pretty important for a functioning state (ideally expressed through contentious political parties), though I'm a fan of trying to make sure that those cultural beliefs are diverse and roughly kept in equal power, so as to provide a check on factionalism.
But I'm generally in favor of maintaining current political boundaries, and nearly all of them are arbitrary. But we're gonna start getting into civic religions and noble lies in a second...
