Moving to MetaTalk November 14, 2005 5:41 AM   Subscribe

Reading the thread about the eBay scam stuff, it made me want a new pony.

Wouldn't it be neat if when someone takes a post to MetaTalk (for whatever reason), that the original post be marked somehow (maybe similar to the "best answer" check-mark) to indicate that it had been brought to the other forum (by that I mean MetaTalk). This would make the whole MetaUniverse™ a more unified whole, more interconnected...

It'd also be entertaining for grouses like me who love to watch a trainwreck happen...

No andrew... I mean a feature... like a "gone to MetaTalk" mark that shows up on the top level of the post...

Just to make it obvious to someone scanning the items...

I don't think we want to encourage threads that get 'sent to MeTa'. The whole point of MetaTalk is almost always something going awry, and many times its something happening in the thread that has nothing to do with the post.

Personally, I don't want to think of Metafilter as some huge sprawled out city where the citizens go chasing ambulances and police cars because they have nothing better to do with their time.
posted by onalark at 6:03 AM on November 14, 2005

... or there's the "nice post" callouts like the recent one for jonson.

I want to think of MetaFilter as a huge sprawled out city, with all of the very human interactions that happen in real life...

Actually, I want to think of MetaFilter as a huge sprawled out city, where the citizens go around wearing just its underwear, but that's just me...
posted by jpburns at 6:25 AM on November 14, 2005

The easiest method to implement this would be an [MT] link similar to [!]. Clicking that link would bring up a posting window, blah blah blah.

Think how easy that would be. Too damned easy! This would invite a flood of bitchfests in MetaTalk compared to the relative stream we have now.

Uh-uh. No way.

Yeah, not such a good idea. Negative reinforecment and attention and everything else people said here already.

It's rare someone doesn't most a MeTa tag in-thread when it happens on posts in the blue already.
posted by loquacious at 7:03 AM on November 14, 2005

As mentioned here, I think it would be a lot more appropriate to have a feature like the one mischief describes for all posts by banned users.
posted by Chuckles at 7:11 AM on November 14, 2005

Bad pony. For the occasional "Nice post!" sort of thing, we've got the sidebar. For crappy, messy posts or user behavior, an ad hoc link in the thread itself seems sufficient.

And those of us who obsess over the dramatic minutea of the site will reload MeTa every couple hours and never miss a beat anyway.
posted by cortex at 8:27 AM on November 14, 2005

That's not a bad idea, and something that's probably fairly easy to implement.

I'm going to have to chime in with the people going, "naw." But I would like to see more integration between the parts of Metafilter. Maybe the ability to connect an ask.mefi with the fpp that inspired it. Somehow have a little blip appear on the fpp's inside that shows the ask.mefi's that were inspired. Alternatively or additionally, allow for that same offered relationship except for MeTa threads. It has occured more than once where somebody posts or drops a cool link in MeTa and it never gets to MeFi.

Actually, I want to think of MetaFilter as a huge sprawled out city, where the citizens go around wearing just its underwear, but that's just me...
It's turning into a police state!

posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 9:05 PM on November 14, 2005

Note: the preceding question was meant rhetorically. I don't actually think it's a feature that adds anything to the site, and dhartung's paraphrase of mathowie's previous thinking on the idea is worth consideration. Metatalk becomes too much the focus of the site (for me it's always been, but I don't think it should be in general), and the blue spins further out of control.

Maybe.

If it had not been necessary to detour around some closed threads, the progression from 9622v2 would have put us at 10531 now instead of 10532, as IIHAA pointed out. Thus, our next destination should be 10632, instead of 10633.

10632 is a thread about Thanksgiving and closes on December 24th. 10633 is a thread about a bug fix and also
closes on December 24th, meaning that we would be searching for a new landing on Christmas Eve.

Have you ever tried to travel on Christmas Eve? Shudder!

As has been pointed out, we have hardly arranged all the
furniture at 10532 and we are facing another move. I propose that we avoid the 106xxs altogether , and leave
Highway 101 at the next off ramp (December 14), for Hwy 202.

I realize that unorthodox meandering annoys gramschmidt,
but there is the upside that we would be where 101 might
have taken us, we will just get there a bit early. What do
you say gram?

That would put us at 10733 – fenriq asking how to search
for a site he later found. 10734 is Mathowie’s discovery of
Ask Yahoo, maybe not the wisest place for us.

I suggest that we consider these options and vote in orderly fashion. I cannot help smiling as I type that: orderly fashion on MetaTalk! An oxymoron?

Nevertheless, let us establish a future home so that if Nice
Donkey goes off to New York again, if raedyn gets snowed in, gnfti gets too busy with his CD success, or if anyone gets trampled in the holiday rush or otherwise lost at sea, 10733 will be shining on the shore like a lighthouse until January 8, 2006.

I like'em dirty.

I also thought it was lima beans.

That's gonna be a hella big martini, yo.

gramschmidt: regarding your oh goodness above: I don't think sangermaine understands your sense of humor.

Uh, and by "you" I mean "Jamie Farr". Oh, fudge.

Rich fudge?

See? Not funny.
posted by gramschmidt at 2:02 PM on December 9, 2005

Would you rather be rich or funny?

I'd rather be molten.

You makin' fun of gram? Or me?

Cuz you can make fun of me all you want, but I'll stick up for gram.

YEAH! I got your back, too, raedyn.

See, raedyn's another exemplary member of our organization; she covers me even in one of the instances Jamie Farr isn't me.

I wish I'd been paying better attention this morning; I could have held Alex's arms and legs down while you injected the sodium pentothal. THEN we could have gotten to the bottom of things.

Of which things, I'm not sure.

Check this weird thing out, finding out that someone I just met here in Baltimore is a fairly active MeFi member. It's a small world.

I might complain about this lapse in attention, but I am fairly well stuffed with good food and wine. Such a nice party. But 3 parties in a week - that schedule gets a bit heavy. Wouldn't it be nice id someone had a fabulous party in say, February?

Nice id is my cousin. He sometimes comes over for alfalfa on Saturdays.

Nice Id is a fun donkey to be around, but for tea parties or academic colloquia or receptions for the ambassador, I much prefer the company of Nice Superego.
posted by gramschmidt at 12:57 PM on December 11, 2005

Ah, grapefruitmoon. She still posts, just not here.

Shall I burn my Tom Waits CDs?
posted by gramschmidt at 1:02 PM on December 11, 2005

Sure. Nice Superego has nice clothes, long gloves, and silver sandals, but s/he doesn't have a genuine longboat tiara.

There was an outage. Power Company said 2 hours to fix it. Then there was dinner. All this time I have been struggling not to post a minor, but dreadful pun for gram. I lost.
Tom Waits for no man. Now you lost.

Kenko alert. After seeing kenko's post of the old Bartender's Guide, it became obvious that KENKO MUST BE WITH US on our next migration.
What are longboat-mates for if not to drink all his Blue Blazer mistakes?

SO, are you going to alert kenko, or just us?

In the aftermath of Cranberry's pun, roving bands of marauders and scavengers picked clean the already desolate landscape.

The roving bands of marauders and scavengers - did they take their spoils and leave in a longboat?

Miss Iceland was crowned the surprise winner of the Miss World 2005 in a lavish ceremony in China watched live by millions across the globe today. - Cranberry

Some TV news report of that event I saw claimed there was an audience of 2 billion for that event. There is no way that 1 in 3 people on all of the planet watched that. I bet one in three people don't even have access to a TV, nevermind choose to watch THAT. The ridiculous claimed biased me against being able to like or respect the pagent.

If Cranberry was in the pangent, though, I would still watch it.
posted by raedyn at 6:42 AM on December 13, 2005

(When I mis-type pagent with a superfluous "n" like that, the word looks remarkably like pregnant. Which is funny because anyone that they know has ever been pregnant will not be allowed to enter the competition.)
posted by raedyn at 6:43 AM on December 13, 2005

Next time that I am not in a pageant, I will let raedyn know.
I did not watch the pageant, but I was named Miss Congeniality in absentia.

Lets's see, we have hippo sandwiches, chili, cornbread and Mexican coffee, salvaged beer and churros, turducken and nearly enough vodka, cupcakes/muffins, Jell-o salad - I think we are about ready to migrate.
Bet gnfti doesn't realize that we all saw him slip jessamyn's glass slipper into his pocket. Be careful not to bump into him on the journey.
*tugs* no, not those little boats, I am struggling to get a swimming cap over my tiara. Just in case the trebuchet ride does not reach shore. There! Good thing I cut my hair.
See you at 10733.
