Brooklyn meetup? November 18, 2005 7:09 PM   Subscribe

BrooklynFilter: Anyone interested in a meetup in west Brooklyn (Ft Greene / Clinton Hill / Boerum Hill / Prospect Heights / etc.)? Some of us feel excluded from the Manhattan meetups and want to rock the mefimeetup style. We're thinking Freddy's, Alibi (backyard bonus), Soda, etc... Nu? Any takers?

My schedule is erratic, but I'm definitely interested.

sounds good to me.

also: there's already an upper west side meetup in the works for the saturday after thanksgiving, I think...

Awwwww, don't feel excluded, Manhattan Meetups are inter-borough-ational.

You suckas ought to move to a real borough.

After all dame's complaining about having to drag herself to Manhattan, she'd better be at this wingding.

Hahaha I knew yonation was from Brooklyn.

Eww. You mean I'd have to leave Williamsburg? How excluding!

I'm jesting, of course. Sounds like a good idea.

you got me Jesse -- did your sister end up moving to murray hell?

UWS meetups are great and all, I mean who can resist the opportunity to buy an $85 scarf at Barney's Warehouse and set up 10 free checking accounts in a three block span, but it's about damn time Brooklyn emerged on its own. And it'll do you Billyburgers some good to come south for a few hours.

They say Wednesday is the new Friday. How does December 7th work for you all?

Dude. "Billyburg". No. :-)

After all dame's complaining about having to drag herself to Manhattan, she'd better be at this wingding.

#1: I am happy to go to Manhattan and I do—as long as it is on the east side or below 60th.

#2: Dude, it is harder to get from here to the nonsense fancy-pants-I-live-in-a-bownstone-and-send-my-kids-to-St-Ann's (or-I-go-to-Pratt, despending on age) neighborhood than it is to get to the UWS, though it is a nicer place to end up.

#3: Really, if your neighborhood isn't filled with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, or Dominicans and accessible to the L train, I'm gonna bitch. Cause I'm like that. I may still go. But I'm gonna bitch.

#4: I probably won't go to the Thanksgiving one and that makes me sad because I am madly in love with dorian and he leather jacket and dorky books.

an UWS meetup on the saturday after thanksgiving?

hmm. my plane returns to JFK at around 4:30PM...i might be able to make it depending on how jet lagged i am.

(but a west brooklyn meetup might be interesting too.)
posted by Stynxno at 1:37 PM on November 19, 2005

dame, I trust you know I was just kidding. I am well aware of the hassles of subway transport and annoying neighborhoods. And you wouldn't be dame if you didn't bitch about things that annoyed you.

#1 it's true. after going to manhattan 5 days a week to work, it's much nicer to not-go there on the weekend.

#2 hellzyeah. I usually end up walking home from my friends' places in wmburg or bushwick at 2am, 'cos that's the cheapest+fastest way. until it gets warmer and I gets me a bike.

#3 or west indies ppls and north africans. I really love my neighborhood, everyone is so frikking nice to me!

#4 *blushes* dame is the bee's suspenders and tertiary sexual characteristics.

also: the rumoured uws meetup is ostensibly at the ding dong lounge, 106th @ columbus as I recall. nice quiet, cheap place; pool table, couches, big-ass poster of siouxsie sue. mmmmm, siouxsie.

also also: for those with the attitude, hm you know I do not recall meeting you at the last brooklyn meetup.

in conclusion: if we can't bring the 'hat to us, then at some point we are going to have to go harass the 'hat in his own locale.

hat, I know. But I really wound up today & a screed seemed fun.

On to the Berkshires!

What's wrong with Pratt?
posted by spaghetti at 2:48 PM on November 19, 2005

Nothing that isn't wrong with lots of other colleges including the one I went to. I was just being a shithead. Because if it isn't Bushwick, it isn't awesome.

You fuckers are having an UWS meetup next Saturday? I'm not even going to be in town. Argh.

Where was this UWS meetup discussed, anyway? I don't remember seeing a meta thread.
posted by bingo at 8:02 PM on November 19, 2005

it wasn't, really, cochese -- rather sort of an outgrowth of the previous nyc meetup thread, drunken discussion at said meetup, and random email exchanges afterward. I imagine it might get its own actual thread some day soon.

if you can't come it's our loss, but y'know, we can always make more meetups...
posted by dorian at 8:16 PM on November 19, 2005

Well, if it's still at all in the planning stages, my vote is to postpone it til the following weekend.

Dekalb Ave. bus is so convenient it hurts, dame. How fast did you swim?

The bus sucks donkey cock. I can't read on it & it stops every ten seconds. I haven't left yet. Eating big breakfast now!

the coolest thing about williamsburg is definitely its overpriced bars, 21-year old cheesy hipsters, and the deadening, community-less feeling of its environs. otherwise its a really kewl place!
posted by yonation at 8:11 AM on November 20, 2005

So when & where kids?
posted by spaghetti at 8:36 AM on November 20, 2005

yonation, the coolest thing about Williamsburg is having big buildings go up next to you, blocking your windows, having your rent double in 7 years, and having people place their dissatisfaction with NYC living on your doorstep. Fucking awesome. I take it you've read Brooklyn Then and Now and truly have a great sense of the community that's been destroyed?

I've had people in San Francisco in my face over the evils of gentrification, only to find out their friend just opened the newest (and coincidentally lamest) hipster bar on Bedford Ave. Gods beneath us.

But since I work weekends, I could make an UWS meetup next weekend, so right on.

Yeah, I really resent having to pay three to four bucks for a pint. Fortunately I get paid in pounds sterling so that works out at about tuppence ha'penny a shot. Marvellous. God bless America.

So true, i just look for excuses to hop on the B38 express to downtown...you'll discover it when you get jury duty, Dame.

Anyone have the cojones to make this a real Brooklyn meetup and do it at Sonny's Bar in Red Hook? You smokers can drink outside(!) with this view.
posted by hellbient at 12:05 PM on November 20, 2005

actually, i think that's spelled Sunny's.
posted by hellbient at 12:31 PM on November 20, 2005

Ooo, I've been to Sonny's but I was driven there. How do you get there without a car?
posted by CunningLinguist at 3:03 PM on November 20, 2005

ahem, Sunny's
posted by CunningLinguist at 3:03 PM on November 20, 2005

B61 bus from Jay St/Borough Hall. Or a car service. It's not that bad, really. I was just out there today. it's such an amazing spot, and the whole scenary is due to change very soon - with the IKEA and the Fairway supermarket about to open there. Not to mention the water taxis! It won't ever be the same after that.

But I'd forgotten that a few more downtown-ey spots were already mentioned by Pinto, so perhaps it'd be something better suited for the Spring...? Didn't mean to bum-rush the thread.
posted by hellbient at 5:39 PM on November 20, 2005

sunny's is cool with me. vegas at the bergen F would also be ok...

Who on earth actually feels excluded at a meetup in Manhattan? I think MeFites are pretty darn welcoming & convivial, no matter where we happen to meet.

Also: I vote that the next meetup be held

I don't feel the travel burden by Manhattan meetups, but doing a Brooklyn one now and again sounds fun, too. Heck, what ever happened to the proposed Astoria / Beer Garden late Summer, Early Fall meet-up? I would've done that too.

By the by, Sunny's would be fun. Has anyone picked a day yet? Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are bad for me.

If over 10 people show, we get a Junior's cheesecake and Marty Markowitz jumps out naked. It's downtown tradition.
