AskMe about a Toronto meetup December 7, 2005 8:00 AM   Subscribe

In response to this link (http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/28591) in the green, proposing a Toronto meetup. The "link" feature doesn't seem to be working for me, hence the URL. AKA: Toronto Meetup!

Bull and Firken, 1835 Yonge, just south of Davisville. Time suggestions?

Idiot Mittens, for future reference you can make a link like so:

<a href="http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/28591">Link description here</a>

Ooh, easy stumble distance!

Fairly easy stumble for me too, so I'll do my best to be there, unless it's this Saturday evening.

As long as it's not this weekend, I might be able to swing it.

gah.. north of bloor? I might be able to strap on an oxygen mask and make it up, but decemeber 's a pretty hideous month. School!

Still gets me, the number of otherwise well-informed, presumably intelligent people who understand a link but don't know how to make one without a clicky auto-linky button. What with so many programs making it automatic we just don't all need to know code any more, I guess. Progress? Who knows. I know how to use a precompiled program but know nothing about C++ and so on... same difference, I guess. Just a different medium.

Just make sure the place is still there before setting a date and time. (cf. last meetup)

I think there was one not long ago (Nov 11), but I missed it, so maybe I can try again. This weekend is no good for me either... well, not friday at least.

And Davisville... woah. Do they have oxygen up there? I always pass out when I get north of Dundas... but I kid. Seriously, I took the Bloor subway today and only got light-headed.

Maybe the 16th?

To caution live frogs: bite me. Some of us have more interest in getting out and socializing with other human beings than learning how to program a computer. And as for everyone else, Tuesday, the 13th works well for me, but if everyone would prefer Friday the 16th that would be fine. The Firkin is indeed still there, and it's about a 30 second walk from the Davisville subway stop. I figured midtown would be a good compromise for those living in different areas.

Idiot Mittens, you may have read something negative into caution live frogs' statement more than I did, it just seemed like <grandpafilter> to me.

Idiot Mittens writes "Some of us have more interest in getting out and socializing with other human beings than learning how to program a computer."

Just a small clarification to this small topic: writing a link in HTML has nothing to do with "programming a computer". HTML is for text formatting so the sentence you're looking for is "Some of us have more interest in getting out and socializing with other human beings than learning how to format text correctly."

To jessamyn: On second read, I concur. I retract my snark, and I'll try my best to ignore nkyad.
posted by Idiot Mittens at 11:28 AM on December 7, 2005

Well, nkyad's comment wasn't even explicitly snarky, unless you're feeling self-concious about your text formatting skillz.

This meet-up is getting off to a great start already!

Do you suppose we can get Nykad to tell Idiot Mittens to get off his lawn, and then have a repeat of the storming out performance we got a couple of meet-ups ago?

Have we ever done a non-weekend meet-up? I dunno if people would show up on a Tuesday night. They're usually Friday / Saturday. On the other hand, maybe a Tuesday night would bring an entirely different Toronto Mefite crowd.

I was going to be going there with some friends Tuesday, that's why I suggested it. But Friday's fine.

And guys, guys.....check out this link-embedding action. Pretty good eh?

...check out this link-embedding action.

Oh, you can do it. Guess you're not really all that interested in getting out and socializing with other human beings after all. Oh wait, was that a straw man?

Idiot Mittins, your election to link to Chuck has wholly redeemed you in my eyes.

In my country pictures of Chuck Norris are meant as a peace offering. Anyway, I'll just end this here. I will be at the above mentioned address next Tuesday night between 8 and probably 11. I'll probably be at the back at the pool tables, with two other guys and a blonde girl. If anyone cares to join me they're welcome. And if anyone wants to continue a non-debate, they'll have to do it without me.

I'd have to say another day (like the Friday you suggested) would likely be better. Mefite gatherings tend to be fairly MeFi focused. It's not the only topic of conversation, but it is certainly a significant one. Having a few non-Mefites in a large MeFI group doesn't sound like a lot of fun for them.

pictures of Chuck Norris

Uh, Jesus. I didn't know Chuck Norris was into that kind of martial arts.

(Since you directly linked the image, metafilter.com shows up as the referrer in the 'get' request sent to the web server. The owner of that site has tastefully filtered out such direct links by replacing all thusly linked images with Goatse.cx)

Fair enough, I could do Friday. All that's left is the time. My email's in the profile.

Oh good lord. That wasn't me. Please remove that Matt.

My lack of programming/formatting skills have foiled me once again! So long everyone, I'm going analog.

I don't have any plans for that night, so I think I'll be going. Of course I'd stand all of you up in a minute if I had the chance of a hot date;-)

Say, eightish?

Whoops, someone just reminded me I'll be out of town all next weekend. But like I said, I'll be there Tuesday if anyone wants to swing by. If anyone wants to coordinate something else, my email's in the profile. If nothing else, this thread has given me something hilarious to paste onto my blog. Glad I could make your day cortex. I'll be leaving for China soon to study with an old Tibetan text-formatting master, and plan to one day return to redeem my tarnished image.

Idle curiosity, what's the etiquette here? Just invite one's self? Wear a name-tag? I'm a fairly new member...
posted by generichuman at 6:01 PM on December 7, 2005

Based on my own experiences the etiquette appears to be "show up, get drunk." YMMV.
posted by Ryvar at 7:08 PM on December 7, 2005

If it's on the 16th or later, I'll show up. I'm back in town to visit my parents. Firkins are kinda dull, tho! Aren't they a huge franchise? I'd propose Kalendar's on Bloor W (near Clinton IIRC). Don't want to stir up mutiny tho, so if the masses are in favor of the Bull and Firken, that's fine by me.

p.s. jessamyn or mathowie: can you embolden "toronto meetup"? to a quick scan of MeTa it looks like some troubleshooting thread. People are likely to miss it--I almost did.

Yes! Bloor! Within spitting distance of the annex krew! Seconded.

Isn't Kalendar on College?

posted by jessamyn at 5:58 AM on December 8, 2005

Kalendar is in fact on College, and is more of a restaurant.

Could ori be thinking of Kilgour's? It's more of a bar, despite what the linked listing says, and it's on Bloor a few blocks away from Clinton.

I don't know if I'll be available - as far as I can tell, we haven't picked a night, and December is a crazy month - but in general, as long as it's on the subway, it's accessible enough for me. Yeah, Firkins are lame kit pubs for the most part, but there are usually big enough tables to fit everyone around, and aren't we supposed to be entertaining enough to keep ourselves amused?

Okay, fair enough. like I said before: anywhere is fine with me. I will have just finished all my obligations to school for the term.

(jessamyn: thanks!)
