Christmas. Christmas. Smoke. We can do better than one link posts to one trick ponies, folks.

The smoke pics (last link) were cool, but some kind of exposition in the post would have been nice. The other two just don't make mefi look like all that interesting a site.

What? No we can't.

But thanks for your little quality review. It's appreciated.

It's a dark day for MetaFilter, indeed.

Note that the entry form for posts is set up in a way that actually seems to assume that you are making a one-link post. Other links are icing, as far as Post A Thread is concerned.

I guess it's a slow day on the interweb. Sllloooowwwwwww day. Nothing new or interesting going on here. Nope. No sir.

If I find anything worthwhile in the next eight hours, I'll be sure to post it, but I just don't see that happening.

I saw the two xmas posts and figured hey, remember when we were in elementary school and it was almost xmas and there was like a day or two to go until a long vacation and everyone was totally phoning it in and we were given busy work and fake assemblies to attend?

one-word, one-link posts are just like the combination of glitter, construction paper, and paste being dropped on your desk.

Yeah, but who wants a desk so covered in the stuff that you can't see the angel underneath it all?

Really, one link posts can be clever and timely, but three in a day? C'mon.

Maybe mathowie can code some kind of timer for one-link, one-word posts. Set it up so that only one can be made a day or a week.

Would that be good enough to stop all the whiny fucking MetaTalk posts about them?
posted by eyeballkid at 1:50 PM on December 15, 2005

3 out of 19 posts does not come remotely close to covering the desk. Just gently push it to the corner and look for something else to read.

I hated "Touched By an Angel" FWIW. Angels scare me. When I see an angel, I think to myself, "Is this angel here to steal my soul or to guide me through life with an all-knowing hand." Bottom line? Can't trust those damn angels as far as you can throw em. Besides, they'd just fly away only to return and terrorize me once again.

What were we talking about again?
posted by KevinSkomsvold at 1:56 PM on December 15, 2005

You're supposed to cut the paper up into an angel shape, paste it, and then sprinkle glitter on it.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 1:57 PM on December 15, 2005

I agree. I like one link posts too. Why do we need to pad out a post with extra links, just for the sake of having more links. The smoke post is cool in and of itself. What exactly do you want from it?

Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies?
and even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart:
I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence.
For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure,
and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us.
Every angel is terrifying.

Wouldn't secular cutouts be more appropriate for metafilter? Snowflakes perhaps? We even have scientific proof that snowflakes exist.

The glitter cartel, however, is corrupt to the core.

ebk: Either the poster wants to be FRIST PSOT, or they want to be cleverly mysterious (or otherwise intentionally vague), or otherwise they don't deign to grace us with a more detailed description. Sorry, Majesty, to require extra keystrokes of you.

I don't post a lot of FPPs, but when I do (unless they're games), I like to put some amount of work into composing them. Links that say "go here" and nothing else are rude. When I'm with a romantic partner, and I tell her to follow an explicit set of instructions, she knows me well enough to know it will be for our mutual benefit. The surprise at the end will be worth it, and will justify the rudeness. I have no such guarantee on MeFi. Usually I'll check out the comments before...

Wait. That last bit doesn't sound good. Not very good at all. I meant like a scavenger hunt for a Christmas present! Oh, you people have filthy minds.

Single link posts don't exist because a user is in a rush to make a post and they're not trying to hide something from you. Single link posts, like any post, have whatever description the post writer felt it necessary to include. Sorry, Majesty, that you can't be bothered to click a link and reveal the mystery inside.

The problem isn't the form, though it's something that does exacerbate the issue. The problem is shitty content. Sometimes one word one link posts are fine, when there's good content. Othertimes, they're shitty ciphers on the page.

Let's see....

We have one angel with so much glitter and paste the damn thing won't be dry until Valentines Day.

Here is an angel with its head cut off and stuck back on with paste so now it looks like a hunchback.

We got an angel with wings covered in paste and three lonely pieces of black glitter stuck on randomly.

Here is a meticulous angel that looks so much like the example that it is scary. Obviously a child who aims to please.

One sad little angel with a crumpled look, a small rip, and I think that might be a tear stain.

Finally, my personal favorite, an angel with feet covered in glitter and a nice drawn-on mustache.
