The cultural function of lists and prizes. Not that this explains the poster's attitude to his own post, or, indeed, whether it was a good post or not.

By which I mean, yeah, it's a defensively-worded post, which primes some people up to run in with a battle-axe, but I could see making similar posts about things "everyone" knows not to do like, I don't know, lifting heavy things with your genitals.

Nothing rankles me more than people who post things "because someone was going to". No one would have if you didn't, kenko! Don't try to play it off like "Dude, I don't really like the Power Rangers, I'm just wearing this shirt because someone was going to." Grow a backbone and own up to the fact that you think it's actually interesting. Or don't make us spend our milliseconds scrolling by it.
Okay, a couple things probably rankle me more than that, but it's still annoying.

I've given up complaining about people posting annual events every single year, but I don't understand it either. We just seem to have to talk about the Darwin awards, the Bulwer-Lytton prize, the anniversary of this or that armistice or historic event, &c &c, over and over and over. Selah vee.

Of course most of these posts include some prominent notice that they are an annual sort of thing, like, oh I don't know a phrase like "annual best of X review" or some such. This means that people who don't care about X have a reason to NOT read the thread, while those who are actually interested in discussing X can do so - and really should be allowed to do so without having others who clearly could not give two shits about the topic come in and start a MeTa thread bitching about a thread they have no interest in reading in the first place. It isn't necessary to start a MeTa over every thread you don't want to read, is it? There are plenty of threads I don't want to read, or think are unnecessary, but I don't enter the thread just to say "this thread sucks and PS I'm complaining about it in MeTa."
There is no God of the Mouse compelling you to click on every FPP and participate in every thread. The best 'filter for what you find interesting is your own brain. Read the FPP and then decide if you care. Save the MeTa callouts for the inappropriate or abusive FPPs/comments, not as a method of tailoring the content of MeFi to your own liking.

KG - Because the poster wanted to discuss the links, and perhaps avoid having the thread be about whether the thread was necessary? I didn't see that as any different than a post like "Electionfilter (someone had to post it..)" kind of thing we were seeing a while back. You must realize by now that people can get really bitchy about post content here, and naturally people putting up links are going to be defensive in response to the snark factor. Just because the poster was unsure about how well-recieved the links would be doesn't mean the post itself is delete-worthy. Aside from your comment I don't see anything in the thread that makes me feel those participating thought it was a crap post.
Don't mean to be all pissy here but the comment in-thread was just unnecessary. The MeTa callout without the "This thread just isn't that interesting" might not have annoyed me so much.

frogs, that wasn't just a comment in thread, it was a quote. Of the poster.
He wasn't "unsure about how well-recieved the links would be;" he stated with certainty that the subject isn't interesting. Is stating upfront that the post is about dull and stupid stuff supposed to somehow disarm criticism? How would that work?

Oh boy, called out! It's my first time, so, you know, I'm kinda nervous.
Keith, the reason I posted it is that someone was going to, but that person was probably just going to post a single link to Pitchfork's top 50. At least this way some other lists got some of the mefi lovin'. I do think such lists are silly, though discussing them can be fun (if repetitive); nevertheless, I thought this would at least be a way of making the inevitable not as bad as it might otherwise have been.
Anyway, if you like it, what do you care? If you don't, well, why wouldn't you agree that it's inevitable and someone would have done it anyway, and, again, not care?

And Pitchfork reviewers shouldn't be shot. They should be forced to only listen to the records they praise. That would change their tune pretty quickly.

I'm saying if you don't like a post for some reason, flag it. If it's blatantly offensive or abusive, then MeTa is more appropriate. 90% of the reason the flags were implemented (from my perspective) was to stop having MeTa threads hashing out every post anyone thinks is sub-par.
I think I see more MeTa complaints about people shitting in threads than I see about bad threads in general.

Okay guys, you finally got me - I'm not really Dutch.
I'm actually dhoyt.
Alright, here we go:
This is an interpretative translation, mind you: I wouldn't translate this use of (the loanword) "fuck" in Dutch, used as an interjection, to "fuck" in English, as it's often used in Dutch with a more benign connotation. Ah, the trappings of using foreign words at will. :) Used as an expletive, however, it's more transparent IMO, i.e. fuck=fuck.
Hope this makes sense, because I've recently applied for a side job as a Dutch-English translator. Wish me the luckiness!

Yeah, I can see why.
Long version: I figured, you're probably wondering why I used "damn" instead of "fuck" when "fuck", an English word, was used in the original. What I tried to make clear was that the meaning can differ subtly when used as a loanword, which is why I went with the less charged "damn".
Short version: Fuck is not always fuck.
Longboat version: Damn, aren't your sugarcubes laced.

I got the not always fuck part, it's the is sometimes fuck part that broke my head.
Also: Trout Gravy is the official expectorant of plumpr, so no soup for you (and I am serious about the MetaChat thing).

It's the one Caribbean country which Americans don't go to. And it was beautiful.

Did you mix the rum with the cola? I love when they do that. Makes you feel like Cuba is actually free.
(In Holland though, they unimaginatively call it a BaCo - what do they call it in the States, anyway?)
Congratulations on breaking the embargo.

They love Canucks down there. Tourism is now their #1 industry, and Canadians are fully half of their tourists. One day we went on a tour to Havana, and our guide wore a Team Canada hockey tshirt and ballcap, and played Shania Twain in the car. Not that we actually like Shania, but his effort was very sweet.

Golly, an anthem! I never thought of myself as a side dish, more like a main course, of course. I had not seen that although IIHAA had and linked to my formerly cranberry-colored user page.

Err, danO, I think you made a typo. It's spelled "heroine" and yeah, I would also turn to Cranberry in times of need.

Well, IIHAA, you have proved worthy of membership in the thread killer club. A whole day has passed without further comments.
Tomorrow this thread will close forever and ever. 10935 is already closed. 10936 anyone?
Shall we make the effort to continue until June so that when the archaeologists dig up 9622v2 they will find that the longboat civilization flourished for a whole year?

Well, I could try posting the gram signal:
I mean, if a weird rubber doll preparing to sacrifice a knitted pink elephant doesn't summon him, what will?
