This post was deleted for the following reason: request -- jessamyn

I found myself in a grocery store parking lot wrestling with a broken starter.
In short, the rent did get paid, the kids are all safe and happily tearing each other to teeny bits right in front of me. The rest... well it's not important. I'm never going to post while drinking (or drink, for that matter) again. Be warned, it's not a good idea (it sits on the internet forever, no matter how silly :). I wanted to thank everyone who pitched in to help, it ws surreal and amazing and wonderful all at once.
Thanks to my anonymous donor, without which this wouldn't be possible.
Thanks to Mediaddict for helping me help myself.
Thanks to By the Grace of God for someone neutral to talk with us both (my wife and I), when we needed it most.
Thanks to everyone who offered good advice and let me know what an idiot I was being.
And, thanks to mathowie and jessamyn for running this crazy, weird and terrific place.

I really don't feel that I deserved all the help but it's greatly appreciated (I didn't tell the kids) and I'm going to find it hard to make snarky comments for a little while. A very little while :)
I'm not sure what else to say but I'll be here as long as the cable company stays innefficient.
Oh, and Happy New year!

Oh, lest I forget: My wife had an interview today that went well and someone has already promised her a job come tuesday (hedging bets is always good!).

That's marvellous.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what you're talking about. How about a link to a backstory?

I knew I couldn't get away with that. Here

I could have done the same, mate. That wasn't my point.

Try to be constructive (instead of being a caustic arsehole), and you see where it gets you, stavros?

I hope you learned your lesson.
posted by Kwantsar at 8:27 PM on December 30, 2005

I'm sorry, I don't know what that means. Are you insulting me?

It's a Metafilter New Year Miracle! HOORAY!
posted by scarabic at 8:29 PM on December 30, 2005

No, stavros. Quite the opposite. You see, Many people would have written something to the effect of nice link to the fucking backstory, fuckface.

You, on the other hand, politely suggested that the poster ought to provide a little context. Then dash_slot (by my reading at least) completely missed the point of your comment, and suggested that how to figure out the backstory was, like, soooo obvious.
posted by Kwantsar at 8:37 PM on December 30, 2005

Oh, OK. Carry on.

I thought my 'that's marvellous' was being taken as sarcasm. I didn't mean it that way. I'm happy for IronLizard.

I, too, am happy for you, IronLizard. I hope things continue to straighten out for you.

So you were lousy with hooch when you wrote that huh? Couldn't tell, myself. You did alright there, I think.

I'm really happy to hear that you came out on the otherside OK, IronLIzard.

This is great community, and the admins are just frikkin awesome.

Seeing this post, and knowing that the Mefites pitched to help in your moment of need justifies a lot of the BS that goes on around here.

Your New YEar will be better, or sure.

Not that I don't value your contributions here, but maybe you should consider cancelling your Time Warner internet access until you can safely cover food & shelter for your kids for the year?
posted by jonson at 11:50 PM on December 30, 2005

I'm glad everything is looking up for you IL. Happy New Year!

When any of us comes to trouble I hope we can all remember to put out a hand before one drowns alone.

Peace.

I would tend to agree with that prioritization in simple terms. But the facts of the circumstances may say otherwise. I'd hate to job hunt without the internet these days. Sheesh. It reminds me of an anecdote I heard about a housepainter somewhere in a developing nation: great guy, did good work, and charged next to nothing for it.

My friend employed him and wanted to refer him to other friends, but there was no way for his western buddies to contact this impoverished man reliably. The guy was living hand-to-mouth out of a shack with barely a shirt on his back. He had no way to get a leg up on his situation. So my friend went another step: prepaid for a cell phone for a couple of months for the guy, and printed him a few dozen business cards. Next thing you know, the guy is rolling in business and doing great. Having that communication technology made all the difference, not just a difference.

I would, and have given up many things before a broadband connection to the internet. I find it too resourceful to give up. So jonson, not that I don't value your contributions here, but you can go fuck yourself.
posted by puke & cry at 12:12 AM on December 31, 2005

If the guy had given up his internet, he would not have gotten a big donation, and a job offer in the thread. He also made $500 of amazon's mechanical turk program (!!!) so it dosn't exactly seem like the internet connection was pointless.

tell jonson how you really feel, puke & cry
posted by scarabic at 12:31 AM on December 31, 2005

seriously, puke & cry, nice hyperbole, credit for the out of the blue attack on me, but is broadband more valuable to you than food & shelter? food & shelter for your kids?

Pleased for you, IronLizard - prosperous new year.
jonson, did you see where he said 'I'll be here as long as the cable company stays innefficient.', you judgemental berk?

Agreed. Iron Lizard, keep chipping away and don't look back. Congrats on your excellent new start!

IronLizard:
I'm glad your New Year is starting better than your old year ended. That was a near miss, eh?

Kwantsar: I don't think my first comment here was at all caustic, by Mefi's standards. In fact, rather than being an 'aresehole', as in your elegant and justifiable attack on me, the fact is that I included a link, which shows that it was intended to be helpful (tho I agree, analysis reveals traces of sarcasm). I could read the side of a cereal packet, and traces of sarcasm would be there. Sorry 'bout that.

If you read the back story you'll find the cable is already cancelled, TW just hasn't got around to disconnecting it yet.

Man, screw that blue dress article that threatens to make us cry, this and the original thread actually made me well up on like 10 different occasions. Shit, I'm still feeling all constricted in my throat.

IronLizard, really, congrats on pulling thru all that bullshit. I've both been there (not that bad, but pretty bad) and seen others through it as well. I know that as monumental as it looked to all of us reading it, I'm sure it was 20x that big to you, looking at it in your own life.

On a different note, jonson, you are truly what your name implies. Not only had he already cancelled his internet access, his posting HERE on the INTERNET is what helped solve his problem. Way to throw a drowning man an anchor and a nice warm gooey helping of snark on top.

dash_slot-- I urge you to re-read (with a neutral mindset) what I wrote, and see if you can find an attack on you. I didn't imply that you were caustic, and I didn't call you an arsehole.
posted by Kwantsar at 10:35 AM on December 31, 2005

As an asside, I'm amzed that anyone actualy made money of that mechanical turk thing.

I'm sorry Kwantsar - I do see that what I read into that comment is not necessarily the only reading. I over interpreted - for which, as I impugned your meaning, I apologise.
