Sounds cool to Banjo'n me!

Let's skip all the "That's not in Boston!" comments from the peanut gallery that isn't going to show up this time, neh?

Any day Wednesday to Saturday, your choice of venue, preferably somewhere close to the T. Some suggestions in here.

If you do it in Boston, I'll show up. Brookline, even. Why are they always in Cambridge? Are we just, as a group, that pretentious?
posted by Mayor Curley at 5:43 AM on January 3, 2006

Apparently, yeah.

Maybe the pretense gallery could open their own bjorkin' thread for a Cambridge meetup instead of constantly derailing when someone suggests Boston and then bitching about absentees.

Lets do the Public House in Washington Square, Brookline. T accessible if that's your thing, driveable if it isn't. Delicious food and the best beer.
posted by Mayor Curley at 9:50 AM on January 3, 2006

I might make this one depending on timing...
posted by Miko at 10:20 AM on January 3, 2006

Will try (finally) to get to a meetup - depends on timing. I can also vouch for the general goodness of the Public House...

Is the Public House what used to be the Hammond Lounge?
posted by yhbc at 10:47 AM on January 3, 2006

This is the bar, right? Looks good to me.

Which days are better: Wednesday/Thursday or Friday/Saturday? Should we start at 7-8pm?
posted by MzB at 10:55 AM on January 3, 2006

The Public House used to be Anum Cara, right?

Sounds good to me. Weds/Thurs is better for me and Banjo than the weekend.
posted by robocop is bleeding at 11:08 AM on January 3, 2006

Ah, Publick with a "K". No wonder I couldn't find it. The Hammond was around the corner on Washington Street.

I can't get into town either Wednesday or Thursday night this week, but I can't promise I can make it in this weekend either, so don't let me stop anyone.
posted by yhbc at 11:32 AM on January 3, 2006

The Public House used to be Anum Cara, right?

It was. and it's still wicked good.
posted by Mayor Curley at 11:39 AM on January 3, 2006

I'll have to say I miss the Hammond (now the relatively upscale Washington Square Tavern). "Dive-bar" and "Brookline" so rarely appear together anymore.
posted by jalexei at 12:25 PM on January 3, 2006

Oh, and another vote for Wednesday/Thursday...
posted by jalexei at 12:26 PM on January 3, 2006

Yes. I've never made it to one of these things, but I intend to this time.

The Public House in Washington Square sounds ideal. That's the place on the left side of Beacon St if you're headed out of town, right? I've been there but didn't notice the name.
posted by killdevil at 12:34 PM on January 3, 2006

Oh wait a min, I was thinking of the Washington Square Tavern. Are these two different places?
posted by killdevil at 12:37 PM on January 3, 2006

yes - the Publik House is on the right heading outbound, a few storefronts past Washington Street - it was the (crappy) Kokopelli Chili place previously, and the (also crappy) Tam O'Shanter before that...
posted by jalexei at 12:48 PM on January 3, 2006

I vote for Friday or Saturday, since I have a bit of a drive to make.
posted by Miko at 12:50 PM on January 3, 2006

jalexi, now I know where we're talking about. There's a video store right past the Publick House on the right, right?

I'm pretty flexible as to date, myself.

Hee-hee. One of the teams in my fantasy football league is still named the "Hammond Lounge Hounds". We were there a lot.

How gnarly was that bathroom? I also loved how you could openly puff on a cig, long after Brookline's smoking ban went into effect. Nothing like soiled linoleum and a bunch of crusty old guys eyeing you suspiciously over their (non-ironic) PBR tall-boys...

My vote is for Friday
posted by darsh at 2:52 PM on January 3, 2006

Christ on a cracker... can you folks not get it together enough to accommodate me, please??? This is like the fifth freakin' MeetUp in Boston and Chicago I'll have missed by a matter of days.

have fun!

We need more votes!

Mayor Curley or killdevil, may I email you and give you my phone number in case there are any changes?

Wed/Thurs vote - (whatzit and paperdragon, maybe a third).
I, too, have not been able to make one yet, and the site sounds really cheesy. In a good way.
posted by whatzit at 5:10 PM on January 3, 2006

MzB, surely. Email away.

I've been wanting to visit the suggested meetup spot anyhow, so this provides an excellent pretext. To reiterate... Thursday, Friday, or Saturday would be fine for me.
posted by killdevil at 5:38 PM on January 3, 2006

My vote is for Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday. I can't make it on Friday, but I'm only speaking for myself on that, not Robocop.

my vote for thursday

i could quite possibly make thursday, friday or saturday. i'll check in periodically to get updates.

We require a command decision. Will it be Thursday, Friday or Saturday?
posted by killdevil at 7:38 PM on January 3, 2006

If there is a tie, I have a slight preference for Thursday.
posted by MzB at 8:35 PM on January 3, 2006

I think i'm going to be in boston in two weeks, if you'll wait. Please? I'll bring pictures of the Philly meetup if you do.

as in, I'll be on a plane.

Friday would work for me.
posted by killdevil at 2:24 PM on January 4, 2006

I'll give a definite maybe to any of the days.

One question: I've never been to the Publick House. Does it tend to be very loud? I'm hard of hearing, so, if it's loud, I may wind up staring dumbly at everyone and hopping into snippets of convo I can pick up (which is fine by me - but it's sometimes taken as being unfriendly).
posted by zerokey at 3:06 PM on January 4, 2006

Okay, I am going to the Publick House at 7:30 on Friday. Probably bringing my wife. How will you all recognize me?
posted by Mayor Curley at 4:56 PM on January 4, 2006

Does it tend to be very loud?

It's probably toward the quieter end as bars go, though a Friday night crowd might make me a liar.

I'll need to help put the little one to bed, and probably be there by 8:15 or so.

How will you all recognize me?

I'm a big guy with close-cropped graying hair and black glasses. Will most likely be wearing a black pea coat. Wave to me when I get there...

All right. I just decided that I'm wearing cargo pants and and a v-neck sweater over a dark button-down. I'm 6'2", 210, brown hair, pointy nose, no chin. I may be with a strawberry blonde.

Oh my god. I know I'm wicked late to the game here, but hadn't followed this thread til i read you all were meeting in Brookline....

I grew up in the Hammond Lounge. Well, from infancy to 4 (when my dad quit drinking and dancing on tables)...my very first memory ever is of being totally entranced by the ceiling of the Hammond as I lay in the booth while my folks drank and shot the shit - it was this weird black cork with red splotches on it, I'll never forget it.

To this day (I'm 35) I am a complete pushover for dive bars of any kind, and find nothing in the entire world more comforting and lovely than the smell of cheap beer and stale cigarette smoke that hits you when you walk into a dive bar. It's the smell of the Hammond, the smell of my childhood.
