We obviously can't have respectful discussions about respectful discussions. Every time the topic comes up, the same insulting "discussion" occurs. Seeing as how no new information is ever presented in these topics, shouldn't they all be considered double posts and deleted? When they are nothing more than another opportunity to display your disgust with someone who disagrees with you, what value do they add to the site?
Since nobody is ever going to see this . . .

IMO one of the bigger problems facing North American society is far too much respect.
Specifically, too much respect toward ignorant people who wish to shove their religion-based idiocy down everyone's throat.
Too much respect toward, for instance, creationists. Those stupid fuckers are now pushing to have their excreable religion put into the public school curriculum and are succeeding.
Too much respect toward, for instance, asshat presidents who are convinced God put them in power. Or, for that matter (going back a few years) asshat presidents who consult fucking astrologers for advice on how to deal with international negotiations. FFS, it is to cry.
Our tolerance for stupidity is a death sentence for our society. Creation-believing idiots are NOT going to be capable of driving our economy with any success whatsoever. This continent is rapidly heading toward an information-based economy: one that focuses on the research, testing, and design of new products, especially those that are based on scientific principles.
So screw respect for the loons. We don't need them, we don't want them, we should not tolerate them.
This message is brought to you most respectfully by someone who has absolutely no respect for creationists.

Fine, and agreed. But mocking creationism here, again is like protesting Bush by sitting in your living room with a sign, along with three of your best friends who also dislike Bush. If you're going to make fun of creationists, go do it somewhere where it may grab some new eyeballs, or at least reinforce an inadeuqately propounded position.

Agreed, bugbread. It would be far more effective for us to all wander out into the net wilderness and upbraid the idiots far and wide. By god, yes.
But when cockamamie lunacy is brought into our home turf we must deal with it in situ. It would be irresponsible to allow it to exist here without being challenged: tolerating the stupidity is exactly how it got so widespread to begin with.
Fuck creationism and fuck the idiots who promote it.
And for that matter, fuck tolerance toward evangelist religions. Tolerating the wingnut Southern Baptists is what has the nation of America threatening to drop nukes on the mid-east, and tolerance of the wingnut Muslims is what has the mid-east threatening to terrorism the West.
Religion is going to be the death of us all yet. And while a whole bunch of you fruitcakes may be all peaceful with the idea of the Second Coming/72 virgins/whateverthehell, keep my and mine the hell out of your lunacy. You want to die, you just go right ahead. Leave. Me. Out.

five fresh fish : "But when cockamamie lunacy is brought into our home turf we must deal with it in situ."
I only read the first 70 or 80 comments, but I didn't see anyone bringing cockamamie lunacy into our own turf. Everyone was in agreement that creationism is stupid, and falling all over themselves to show just how much they agreed.
boo_radley : "Don't shoo people out of pools that don't belong to you, bugbread."
Sorry.
When I was in junior high school, I learned how to whistle in a way that sounded just like a coach whistle. One day, in gym, not particularly thinking of anything, I whistled when everyone was lined up for dodgeball. Everybody took off running, the coaches were in the middle and totally unprepared...it was chaos for a minute or two, and then the coaches stopped everybody, and found out it was I that whistled, and I got in hella trouble for it. I didn't mean to do something that came off as trying to be a coach, it was just an accident. So forget the pool thing, it was just a poorly phrased suggestion, not an attempt at giving an order or anything.

Asperger Syndrome or (Asperger's Disorder) is a neurobiological disorder named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper which described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who had normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. In spite of the publication of his paper in the 1940's, it wasn't until 1994 that Asperger Syndrome was added to the DSM IV and only in the past few years has AS been recognized by professionals and parents.
Individuals with AS can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Persons with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently. Therefore, many behaviors that seem odd or unusual are due to those neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behavior, and most certainly not the result of "improper parenting".
By definition, those with AS have a normal IQ and many individuals (although not all), exhibit exceptional skill or talent in a specific area. Because of their high degree of functionality and their naiveté, those with AS are often viewed as eccentric or odd and can easily become victims of teasing and bullying. While language development seems, on the surface, normal, individuals with AS often have deficits in pragmatics and prosody. Vocabularies may be extraordinarily rich and some children sound like "little professors." However, persons with AS can be extremely literal and have difficulty using language in a social context.

If we really did agree that we'd never talk about Children of Dune because we'd never be able to civilly discuss it, what happens when cortex dissents and posts a well-thought out, researched post for the blue about it?
There's less and less value to the definition of "we" and "community" as they grow, I guess, when there's no really guidelines for the growth beyond a loosely interpreted, loosely enforced "don't be a dick". Enough people can skirt the rule, and eventually people make grand, sweeping statements that start off "We obviously can't have respectful discussions" and then things just sort of fall apart.

So was Dune Messiah. And, as near as I'm able to discern, all the rest of them but the first one, too.
And what was up with that Dune movie? It was like David Lynch was sitting around the house, thinking "Sting sure would look sexy in a chrome speedo. I should make a movie about that ... Now, if only there were a beloved sci-fi classic I could embarass in the process."
BTW, I only read Dune, which was fun but a bit ridiculous with the various classes of psychic supergeniuses. 'Well, of course, I predicted that you would predict that I would lay a trap for you here, and my Mentat calculated there'd be a 92% chance you'd be wearing chartreuse...' All in all, I liked his Whipping Star series better.

I really enjoyed Dune Messiah. Sure, it lacked the action of the first, but the entire character of Scytale and the ending are both great. Could've used some Gurney Halleck, but his scenes in Children of Dune are one of the few redeeming bits.

A little bit more rant:
Another reason why "respect" is absolutely unnecessary when dealing with Creationists is that they are, almost to a man, wholly ignorant people. Few of them have received a broad and deep education that has challenged them to defend their opinions in an environment of high standards for factual proof, applied logic, statistical analysis, and philosophical grounding.
They are ignorant people so immensely ignorant that they do not realize they are ignorant. Bereft of even a surface understanding of the Big Ideas in science they inevitably misrepresent nearly the entirety of science as they offer themselves up as a contrary voice.
It is time to call to task our media for providing unqualified nincompoops an outlet for their gibbering spew. These malcontented throwbacks to the dark ages have nothing of value to contribute to our national and local dialogs.
Our future relies on the actions we take today. Should we be so foolish as to allow these cretinous rabblerousers access to our politics and our schools, we lose. Look at the areas of the world where extreme religionists have taken control of the culture and you see only poverty, war, intolerance, and hatred.
The ignorant do not deserve respect: they are our destruction, not our salvation.

Read Dune, enjoyed it, then couldn't get beyond it. I started the second and was bored to tears.
I... uh... really liked Lynch's Dune. It's not perfect, but... It's odd and fun... dang it.
Oh, and amen, FFF. This is preaching to the choir, though. Unless bevets in lurking.

A good deal of the pointless ranting in the world can be traced back to people struggling with computer problems.

God emperor was one of the biggest letdowns for me. I'd read the first three in the seventies and when GEoD came out there was a huge amount of hype since everyone had figured that it was a trilogy and no one expected a fourth book. I shelled out the money for the hard cover as soon as it was released and excitedly tore into it. And boy was I let down. Nothing happens in that book. Nothing. It's >500 pages of absolutely nothing.

Hallelujah, Hare Krishna, and shout Amen, brother! Imagine those smelly, untutored Sami and Yanomami and Yoruba and all the other spirit-cringers daring to contaminate the same plane of existence as the World's Most Militantly Enlightened Canadian®. And we would have got away with it, too, if it weren't for that mettling fish-guy with his high standards for factual proof, applied logic, statistical analysis, philosophical grounding, and madd freebsd skillz. Just to keep this on topic--I enjoyed Dune the First, figured it was meant to be complete in itself, never bothered with any of Herbert's crank-em-out sequels.

Frank Herbert's "Dune" series concerns the queer planet of Arrakis, and the dense political and cultural intrigues within. It is a very serious series, quite unlike the cheery, gay adventure novels of early pulp science fiction. So settle down into your reading chair, pour a glass of brandy, light up a cigar or a fag, and settle down for some intense reading. Ass bandit.
