Portland Meetup April 25, 2006 10:41 AM   Subscribe

Dear Portland, Oregon:

How are you? I've been thinking that we should be going out and getting righteously tanked one of these days. How would late May sound? Where shall we meet?

I was not fond of the Lucky Lab, but if that's where consensus lands us again, I'll follow the beer.
posted by cmonkey at 10:43 AM on April 25, 2006

Dear cmonkey:

we should definitely get sloppy drunk again. I concur re: avoiding a Lucky Lab repeat, but am otherwise open to suggestions. Late May sounds lovely.
posted by cortex at 10:57 AM on April 25, 2006

I suggest Roots Brewing, which is only a couple of blocks away from the Lucky Lab has *much* better beer and is, IIRC, smoke free.

Also, I suggest not-Memorial-Day-weekend for the date because I'll be out of town and I've missed the last 3 meetups.
posted by turbodog at 11:05 AM on April 25, 2006

Memorial Day weekend is 5/27-5/29. So maybe we're looking at 5/20 or 6/3?

I too vote against the Lucky Lab, although they had cute t-shirts. It was like drinking in a cafeteria.
posted by matildaben at 11:14 AM on April 25, 2006

Can't do 5/20 coz its the weekend of my birthday and i will be out of town. Any other weekend is fine for me.
posted by ramix at 11:24 AM on April 25, 2006

It's not a meetup without Ramix. 6/3?

June 3 would work for me.

6/3 works for me. I have a wedding to go to the next day, but it's in town, so I should be around.

I'll endeavor to keep my beer off cmonkey's pants.

6/3 seems too far away. Do you people actually have social lives that require planning that far in advance? Howsabout 5/13?

As to locale I'd prefer the east side, but whatever works.
posted by togdon at 11:51 AM on April 25, 2006

5/6 and 5/13 no can do here.
posted by matildaben at 11:56 AM on April 25, 2006

Of course, now that I think about it if we do wait until 6/3 it should be warm enough outside to actually be outside (this weekend was a freak occurrence that I refuse to acknowledge as anything resembling spring).

6/3 is the Starlight Parade, so downtown is out (unless there are ladies who want to go to Kell's and hit on drunk sailor boys, or guys who want to do so at more discrete venues).

Also, I think this deserves a FPP when surrounded with links to similar resources in other cities...
posted by togdon at 12:02 PM on April 25, 2006

togdon: That's "discreet".

Although I'm not a big fan of the west side, the skyline tavern is awfully pleasant when it's nice out...
posted by dersins at 12:09 PM on April 25, 2006

I believe the Rose & Raindrop lets groups reserve the upstairs and/or the back room. And they have a metric buttload of taps.

East Bank Saloon is kind of a dump, but has outside seating.

Error
There are no TriMet stops within walking distance of where you are going.

If I have to take a bus and then walk another mile and change, I'm not gonna be there.
posted by cortex at 12:20 PM on April 25, 2006

(Er, regarding Skyline Tavern, that is.)
posted by cortex at 12:21 PM on April 25, 2006

That Rose & Raindrop looks pretty sweet, and appears to be convenient to transit. I'll let the locals weigh in, though.

Not that I'll be able to make it, but I've always had fun at the Yamhill Pub when I've found myself in Portland.
posted by Captain_Tenille at 12:41 PM on April 25, 2006

Well, one can certainly talk of discrete venues, particularly in comparison with all of downtown.
posted by kindall at 1:03 PM on April 25, 2006

I like Rose and Raindrop, for what that's worth.
posted by yodelingisfun at 1:05 PM on April 25, 2006

Judging by the turnout the last two times, the Yamhill pub would be quite a bit too small to handle us.

I've never been to the Rose & Raindrop, but I've heard good things, and the #6 bus can drop people off right there from downtown.

I'll endeavor to keep cmonkey's pants off.

I don't know why you're assuming that I'll put them on in the first place!

posted by turbodog at 1:31 PM on April 25, 2006

I've never been a big fan of Rose & Raindrop with larger groups, their service tends to get really wonky. Also, since the weather is just bound to be nice, it'd be cool if we could find a place with a patio. My suggestions for places that can accommodate larger groups with patios close in on the East side near busses are... Acme, Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive, Amnesia Brewing, and Moon and Sixpence. They all have rotten service too, now that I think of it, so if Rose & Raindrop wins I'll still happily attend, of course.

I'd also like to share that I just realized that I'm busy on 5/13 because 5/14 is Mother's Day and my Mother will be visiting, so it'd probably be best to ignore everything I've said thus far. Also, we should get Mathowie to come out and play.

Heh, do the other cities have this much of a problem picking someplace?
posted by alana at 1:41 PM on April 25, 2006

You should see what happens in Texas. They should have such problems.
posted by cortex at 1:47 PM on April 25, 2006

it does, indeed, have a metric buttload of taps.

i'd prefer somewhere that has an imperial assload of taps.

such as the horse brass.

But, y'know, wherever, as long as there's alcohol involved.

Except the Lotus. I'd rather drop cinderblocks on my feet.
posted by dersins at 1:47 PM on April 25, 2006

I want to see dersins drop cinderblocks on his feet. Let's not go to the Lotus.

June 3rd seems to have popular support. Any compelling arguments against June 3rd?
posted by cortex at 1:59 PM on April 25, 2006

The Lotus is one of the shittiest, most unjustifiably overpriced bars in Portland ($3.50 for a fucking Pabst!) and it's usually crowded with slackjawed twenty-somethings that spend too much time in tanning salons. Ick.

Heh, do the other cities have this much of a problem picking someplace?

We're just blessed with an abundance of nice places to drink. It's tough to choose. ♥ Portland

6/3 works for me. I'm not fussy about the location as long it has lots of booze.
posted by ramix at 3:26 PM on April 25, 2006

I vote for The Acropolis. 50 taps, and for you carnivores, outstanding bargains on steaks. There may also be some entertainment there.

Unfortunately I now live in LA (well, not exactly unfortunately given the circumstances) but I thought I'd throw that spot out for you. Mull it over. If business takes me to your neck of the woods I'd love to hook up with the pdx mefi massif.

Acrop rules! Consider though a weekend meet (or just about every day) will be a cover charge. Yeah...but then Aine may be there.

*cough* I'd throw my hat in for Memorial weekend if it's not too much a problem since I got it off from work; 6/3 will do too -- I might come up with a bad case of work-itis.

Several "mainstream" places to consider:
Rockbottom Cafe
Kell's
Old Chicago (Mall 205 comes to mind)
McMenamin's Kennedy School

Look forward to seeing y'all, if not sooner!

ps., anyone planning on hitting up the Brewer's fest at the Waterfront Park? It'll be the last weekend of July.

Woot!

OK folks, focus. Here's the criteria.

* Staggering distance from transit
* Must hold group >= 20 people
* Good Beer

Pluses but not required:
* Patio
* Service
* Eastside

So, Holman's then? We'd have to get there fairly early to ensure patio seating, but they do have the added advantage of surprisingly good cheap bar food, including the single best drinkin' food I've ever had: deep-fried mac 'n' cheese wedges.
posted by dersins at 9:28 AM on April 26, 2006

Holman's is a brilliant suggestion, but in the interest of making a decision... Rose & Raindrop hits the first three and is on the Eastside. It also got a good number of votes before I started whining about the crappy service. I say we go there on 6/3.

Now the real fighting shall begin... 6ish? 5ish? 7ish? Is 4:30 too early to start?

We could just have a MeFi/MeCha/MoFi picnic.
posted by togdon at 9:35 AM on April 26, 2006

Citysearch says of Holman's, "good for groups: no". Is that true?

The Rose & Raindrop sounds good if we can reserve a space for the whole group.
posted by matildaben at 9:46 AM on April 26, 2006

Holman's is goodfor groups that slowly grow, especially on the patio. I've been there with as many as 15 people, and it was fine. It wouldn't, however, be so good for 20 people who all show up at once.

Rose and Raindrop is fine, too, though.
posted by dersins at 10:11 AM on April 26, 2006

Holmans is the place with the two really classy pool tables upstairs, right?
posted by cmonkey at 10:29 AM on April 26, 2006

Anyway, I vote for Rose & Raindrop at 6 pm. My Father's Place down the street is a good place for a smaller group to break off and go to afterwards, too.

Holman's? Classy? You must be thinking of some other joint.
posted by dersins at 12:52 PM on April 26, 2006

Rose & Raindrop offers both MFP and Slow Bar as further jumping off points/spill over locations within literal crawling distance.

Holmans is pretty much the opposite of classy, but the suggestion of pool tables reminded me that neither the Rialto nor Goodfoot have been dragged into the "debate" yet... ;)
posted by togdon at 1:07 PM on April 26, 2006

I just went to the Rose and Raindrop for the first time recently and rather liked it. A very decent selection of beer and interesting architecture/decor. The gumbo wasn't bad either. So +1 for the R&R.

I think that June 3rd should work for me. I might be moving that weekend, but if so, I should at least be able to take a break and wander over.
posted by afflatus at 1:16 PM on April 26, 2006

I like the GoodFoot, but it's not exactly convenient for people who don't live in the SE.

It sounds like Rose & Raindrop on June 3rd is the consensus. Let's just say 6 and people can show up before or after then and it'll all work out.
posted by cmonkey at 1:38 PM on April 26, 2006

So we decided Rose and Raindrop, correct? Because umm I'm not allowed back into Rialto. Ever.
posted by yodelingisfun at 5:21 PM on April 27, 2006

I went to the Rialto last night. It was a lot more enjoyable when it was all sleazy.
posted by cmonkey at 8:39 PM on April 27, 2006

Yeah, they redid the rialto awhile ago. It's not nearly as sleazy/sketchy anymore, but on the other hand it still smells like a cheap vegas hotel.....

I'm not sure I can make it (because of ever constant work - which is good,) but I'll try.
