It's no longer my concern June 8, 2006 7:04 AM   Subscribe

"I'm not going to debate this with you or anyone else. In fact, as of today, I'm officially retiring the all-seeing eye dog from MetaFilter, and from the blogosphere more generally, out of protest. As long as I've been a guest here, I've always tried to tell the truth as I see it, and that's all I could ever really hope to do. Beyond that, it's your choice whether to see what's happening for what it really is or not. It's no longer my concern. Goodbye, and thanks for the many great discussions I've been privileged to have with you all."

allseeingeyedog has been gone from metafilter for over a year now. He was one of the high-value mefites banned and sockpuppeted by matthowie for network security reasons.

Because there's a lot of political heat on Matt at the moment, he staged a limp flameout (with the help of the treasonous brownpau), brought us into meta, where we're now making a triumphant noise about it.

1) institutionalized torture centers
2) the 2004 election was stolen
3) outright lying and fraud by the president pre-Iraq invasion
4) NSA warrantless spying on citizens within the country
5) secret rendition programs

Coming soon to the formerly-conspiracy-theory-now-fact list:
6) contractors/mi6/white people posing as insurgents and planting bombs
7) oh shit we really shouldn't have let Nixon move us to Bretton Woods II
8) (pre-emptive irony strike) OMG sylphs vs. chemtrails vs. Trilateral greys! l0lz0rs!

My fourth thought after seeing the headline about the "dead bearded guy" was, "oh I wonder how this will be dealt on Metafilter. Probably a bunch of flaming, some verbose outrage about how we should all be happy, some '.', some conspiracy stuff and definitely a Metatalk post about the whole thing."

All that's missing is an ask.metafilter question, like... "how does one would identify a burnt and destroyed body by its fingerprints?", and then watch the ensuing cyclical mess.

Not for any one reason, and not only because debates are cyclical, moreso that after 20 years of analysis shared among so many other viewpoints, world events themselves have become predictable for me with a fair amount of accuracy.

Blogosphere legend all-seeing eye dog, who has not been seen in public for nine years, is debating fellow webmasters anonymously on the web, according to a newspaper report.

All-seeing eye dog retreated from public view after a public announcement in June of 2006.

Since then his whereabouts have remained a mystery and he has surfaced only once - in 2009 - to attend a Web 3.0 conference.

A member of the community site MetaFilter, who insisted on anonyminity, claims he was almost certain he had encountered all-seeing eye dog on the web. The MeFite said he was initially sceptical when told by an AJAX developer last year that all-seeing eye dog had been conversing via text-to-voice based VOIP channels on a peer-to-peer server.

Our anonymous source claimes to have suspected a hoax, that a modified ALICE bot algorythm may have been instituted in all-seeing eye dog's name by an adoring fan.
Further investigation into the matter had convinced the MetaFilter member that indeed, all-seeing eye dog is in fact posting online after so many years' absence.

The long-reclusive all-seeing eye dog declined an interview, but sources close to the internet figure discount any inferrence of all-seeing eye dog's return to the digirati.

On April 9 he was caught in the rain while out riding and became ill. George Noel Gordon, Lord Byron, died of fever on April 19, 1824 at the age of thirty-six. While he was revered as a hero to the Greeks, his reputation was still tarnished in England, even eight years after he had left. Both St. Paul's and Westminster Abbey refused him funeral services. On a lighter note, one morning it played a midi of "Godzilla". On a darker note, twice it fired flaming, burnt-black hockey pucks into the side of the refrigerator (in what I suspect was an attempt to infect other devices in the kitchen).

As a newbie in the spring and summer of '04, I recall thinking that the portion of MeFites who hang out mostly in MeTa represent a degenerate faction. Finding myself among them today in '06, I still think that might be true.

But there's no denying that once you've been around long enough (or paid attention closely enough) to really have a sense of familiarity with the many high-profile personalities around here, MeTa starts to be much more interesting. It's that human attraction to interpersonal conflict and drama. What do the other primates do when two of them get into fights and whatnot?

I was looking at the contrib index yesterday (and I've dropped out of the top-ten; so has y2karl) and while Smedlyman is in the top ten, what's really interesting is that he's posted almost nothing in MetaTalk and thus his number of comments in the blue actually place him on the list of top number of comments there. He's the only person post-2003, as far as I could tell, to appear there. So if participating mostly in MeTa is bad, then props to Smedlyman.

Then maybe you try your hand at modding it, or testing it's limits, or subverting it. Then, soon enough, you find yourself urinating on the shiny new thing, and then you are defecating on it, and screaming, "HAH! Not so shiny any more, are you? ARE YOU?!!!'

That's natural, right?

Oh, I cut back years ago, so I'd bet Smedleyman and I have had about the same ratio of Metatalk to MetaFilter comments since he's been around.

But you, on the other hand--MetaTalk is your domain. I have been here since September 19th, 2001 and you since April 2, 2004 and you have me beat by around 150 comments in MetaTalk. Think about it--by the time you have been here as long as me, you will have over six thousand MetaTalk comments.

If there were a MetaTalk Top Ten, you would appear to be the hands down favorite for Numero Uno Constant Commenter.

And think of the variations--number 1 for making more than 50 comments in a given thread, say, or Number 1 for more comments in more Meta threads than anyon else ever or Number 1 for making more than twenty comments in more threads than anyone else--oh, the possibilities are endless.

Think of the piecharts !

Mom, EB's got the biggest slice again !

In Meta you are the absolute King of Komments. Oh, it is quite an accomplishment. You should make a post about it.

You're #1 !

You're #1 !

You're #1 !

You're #1 !

You're #1 !

You're #1 !

I think you've regressed from being a 16-year old insecure boy to an insecure 12-year old boy. We can only hope you'll continue to regress to pre-literacy.
