Brainstorming via AskMe is ChatFilter July 25, 2006 11:53 PM   Subscribe

ChatFilter? I'm brainstorming a novelty recipe book for a friend. Meh.

You should have said that. Not that I'm any expert on whether that would have saved it or not, but it makes it more palatable... ;)

mullacc continued it at MetaChat...

Jessamyn is posting in that thread? Just waiting for Matt's post now.

Once again, phrasing is everything with these admins. I swear you could find a way to ask people to index their favorite colors against their favorite type of underwear and it would stay up as long as it was phrased properly.

Jessamyn didn't delete it because she didn't like it. She deleted it because it broke the rules (according to current interpretation). MeCha has no similar rule, so why shouldn't she post?

"Once again, phrasing is everything with these admins."

It's called a "generalization". It's a useful concept, you should try it. For example, if it looks like chatfilter, it probably is. It may not be—but because there's limited information and the whole thing is ambiguous, then going on appearances is the only useful tool available. People could intentionally subvert the generalizations the admins make as in your example. if a whole bunch of people did that, then the generalization wouldn't be useful any more. We can cross that bridge when we get to it. If we get to it, which we won't.

People pretty much said what I would have said. sjvilla79, I specifically checked with mathowie "Is this chatfilter?" because I knew you'd bring it to MetaTalk. It's a great post for MetaChat and it probably should have gone there in the first place.

phrasing is everything with these admins

People bitched about not having guidelines. Now we have them. As EB says, if tons of people start actively trying to subvert them, we'll write new ones. As it is the chatfilter guidelines are already pretty extensive, we're trying pretty hard not to be whimsical or mercurial.

I thought it was a great question with some great answers. I honestly can't see the problem.

To sjvilla79: I thought I should apologize publicly since I called you out publicly.

Yes, that is relevant that it's your own post you're talking about. No, I wasn't having a bad day, but I was being drunk and an ass. It's inappropriate behavior and I'll make an effort to avoid repeating it. I'm sorry.

You should have asked about zombie recipes.

Good on ya, Tuwa. And those of us not invested in either side of the conflict get to enjoy a bit of drunken assery, so it's pretty much win-win.

sjvilla, if it helps -- a while back somebody asked a peanutbutter-centric version of your question.

Perhaps we should distinguish between bad and good chatfilter. I support the no-chatfilter regime but sometimes it seems too strict and simplistic. The question doesn't meet the "concrete problem" criteria but it does possess a high-level of specificity which allows for meaningful answers and it's much more interesting and much less chatty than the prototypically evil 'what's your favorite color?'. There are a group of poll-ish questions that are interesting, specific, and particularly vulnerable to the vast anecdotal wisdom of the green. Some of the best questions of the past take this form e.g. (off the top of my head) the most important thing your father taught you and the classic most meaningful childhood experience. I'd support letting these questions slide even if there's no "concrete problem" to be solved. Really good chatty questions are fine, it's the banal ones that are a waste of precious time and space. Yes, it's a slippery slope but not every slippery slope inevitably leads to roasting Jews. In fact, most just lead to puddles.

Just one more example of the man (or in this case, the woman) trying to keep the food-centric down. Attica! Attica!

..or some such [wiki] nonsense^..

I'll remember to bullshit the next time I post anything that might be wrongly classed on AskMe. No problem though Tuwa and Jessamyn. Let us move on.

Instead of bullshitting, maybe you could just explain what the purpose is behind your chattier seeming questions. It's a pretty low bar.

Bullshitting would probably be easier given the current set of regulations imposed. Cheers.
