Unregistered User callout August 17, 2006 11:45 AM   Subscribe

You know, it would be nice if Unregistered User could exercise some restraint, and stop droppping screeds about the Iraq war and the Bush administration into every single thread. I don't necessarily have a problem with said ranting in the overtly political threads, although I personally don't like the style, but, come on, already.

q.v. And q.v. And q.v. If this isn't a case of Get Your Own Blog, I don't know what is.

No, I'm saying that that comment was a full-on aluminary spectacular, complete with little creases so he can wear it facing fore-and-aft. I particularly enjoy the "YoYo Economy" shtick that he pulls out about every third comment.

UR has a habit of turning any thread he's in into a platform for The Stupid, and it's tedious. If I wanted to read this kind of stuff, I'd go to a blog.

Which is kind of my point, in its entirety. UR needs to get a blog. About five weeks ago.
posted by scrump at 11:55 AM on August 17, 2006 [1 favorite]

And, for an illustrative example, contrast UR's most recent "contribution" to that thread with the comment immediately following it. One is a screed. The other is a comment. Can you identify which is which?

UU, the main problem is not that your posts are over-snarky, but that they are derails. Look back at the examples posted and ask yourself whether they are really tied to the subject matter of the threads. The problem is exacerbated when the derailing comment consumes a screenful of text.

Just try to be more concise and on point. Passionate posts are welcome, but many of your comments are just coming across as random rants.
posted by brain_drain at 12:10 PM on August 17, 2006

I guess my question would be, do you post comments that are NOT of the "drop a bomb into a thread which gets everyone pissed off at you" variety? The stuff I see you writing is mostly this sort of histrionic OMGBUSH sort of commentary which doesn't contribute much to the discussion and just gets people snarking back at you. Just because you can get your snark up to the level of MeFi snark doesn't mean you shouldn't have something else to offer. Pretty much everyone else does.

I get where you're coming from, Unregistered User, but sometimes I'm not even sure if what you're writing relates to the discussed topic at hand in the thread. Mostly, it just looks like a text dump from indymedia or something. It's as if an FPP could somewhat possibly be political and then *bam!* - there's Unregistered User with a gigantic post throwing around vitriol. I'd rather see you a bit more economical and tempered. Then again, I tend to not read long, rambling diatribes, so I may be missing something.

You're kind of like CNN in that respect. But fear not, Metafilter is as American it gets and not only can you recover you can be really popular. This comment is a specific example of the general faux pas being discussed. OC drops a variation of this complaint into a large portion of MeTa threads. Not unlike dios's ever-present anti-sock-puppet complaint, which doesn't belong in this thread unlike he has can prove there's good reason to think UR is a sock-puppet. But I'm guessing he probably doesn't, I'm beginning to think that dios thinks every third account is a sock-puppet. I'm sympathetic to his POV, but this is excessive and paranoid.

Whenever it comes to be the case, either in MeFi or MeTa, that it's common for people to read a comment, check the username, and think to themselves "oh, there's so-and-so beating his/her dead horse again in a thread where it doesn't really belong" then there's a problem. Some people make every MeFi thread about Bush, Iraq, Global Warning, or MeFi's Bias. Some people make every MeTa thread about MeFi's Bias, Dios, or NewsFilter. They shouldn't.

I don't agree with scrump that UR's stuff is classic GYOBFW. I think that first and foremost applies to posts that are agenda-driven and excessive. That's not what posting to MeFi is supposed to be like. But commenting on MeFi is supposed to be discussing and advocating their positions on things. Perhaps when it gets out-of-hand and, as is being argued here, it's comment after comment which is agenda-driven on a single issue and is often inappropriate to the thread, then maybe it's approaching the GYOBFW territory.

I do have good reason to believe he is a sock-puppet. And I don't think every third user is a sock puppet. Just the obvious ones. It doesn't take much ability of perception to tell which usernames are sock-puppets.

We have new users all the time on this website, and it is very clear what new users behave like and what kind of names they choose. Because we have them, it makes it even easier to identify sock puppets.

His username, userpage, and the substance of his posting history leads one to the conclusion that he is the sockpuppet of a user here. But only Matt and Jessamyn can confirm that, and they seemed disinclined to do so. As such, I resign myself to not spending any more time on the user.

As to the other points you were making: I would disagree with you that my complaint about sock-puppets is "ever-present" and, honestly Ethereal Bligh, I expect more of you than such a lazy statement. I've discussed it in about a half-dozen threads that I can recall out of the almost 3k comments I've made on this website. Of course, you are a fair-minded guy, so I take your statement as an indication that I've mentioned the issue too much in the last couple days and will adjust accordingly. I just think you overstated the case and attacked its presentation instead of the merits of it, which seems at odds with your typical contribution to this site.

It was really hot the other day. Really fucking hot. I felt like I was melting.

A friend of mine kept talking about how it was hot. That's all he'd talk about. "It's hot. It's so hot. Goddamn, it's hot." I'd say, "Hey, Tsutomu, have you seen that new building they're working on over by the station?" and he'd say "No. And I'm not going to go check it out now, because it's just too damn hot. You know, Mike, it's really fucking hot today" and then he continued on for another 10 minutes about how hot it was.

This annoyed me, obviously, not because it was needless repetition of something I already thought, but because I was too meek and weak to face the truth that it was hot, and because having an opinion about the temperature was impolite. If I were a strong man, I would find incessant repetition of the truth to be really interesting. I could discuss how hot it was from morning till night, every day, which would be far more interesting than taking a walk, seeing an art exhibition, playing some music, learning some history, studying a foreign language, or the like. A strong willed, aware person realizes that the best thing in life is to repeat, over and over without break, the current temperature outside, like a rosary.

Alright languagehat, fair enough; I take your excellent points.

I've been looking over UU's posts, an activity I recommend for its bracing effect, and I think his use of language is, in a narrow technical sense, actually rather inspired: it is pyrotechnic, metaphor rich, spirit driven, and so deeply felt it's embarrassing simply to read -- it's the sort of thing you might get from a fiery preacher on a really good day. This would be a rare exotic in anyone's little patch; on MetaFilter, coming from the left, it is singular. Only Klangklangston's, in my memory, matches it for force, and Klang's lacks (doubtless by choice) the 'high seriousness' which seems native to UU. Instead of attempting to extirpate, we should be encouraging this kind of language, this kind of thinking from the source of all passion and belief.

The left has blundered greatly in ceding peculiarly religious passion to the evangelical right. The US and the world will not be transformed by sensible people like us getting together to pool our sensibleness and send the viscous, bland, unsalted oatmeal grey tide sweeping across the planet; it will, if it will, by something a lot more like what UU is trying to do.

So, UU, I think you have a talent, a talent of the sort it used to be said was "death to hide." If you continue to try to cultivate it here, and it could profit from that, I believe, I will be paying close attention.

Comrades, we have now come to the question of the revolutionary crisis as the basis of our revolutionary action. And here we must first of all note two widespread errors. On the one hand, bourgeois economists depict this crisis simply as “unrest”, to use the elegant expression of the British. On the other hand, revolutionaries sometimes try to prove that the crisis is absolutely insoluble.

This is a mistake. There is no such thing as an absolutely hopeless situation. The bourgeoisie are behaving like barefaced plunderers who have lost their heads; they are committing folly after folly, thus aggravating the situation and hastening their doom. All that is true. But nobody can “prove” that it is absolutely impossible for them to pacify a minority of the exploited with some petty concessions, and suppress some movement or uprising of some section of the oppressed and exploited. To try to “prove” in advance that there is “absolutely” no way out of the situation would be sheer pedantry, or playing with concepts and catchwords. Practice alone can serve as real “proof” in this and similar questions. All over the world, the bourgeois system is experiencing a tremendous revolutionary crisis. The revolutionary parties must now “prove” in practice that they have sufficient understanding and organisation, contact with the exploited masses, and determination and skill to utilise this crisis for a successful, a victorious revolution.

Honestly, I find this comment, and to anyone else who makes a similar one, just a little bit insulting.

So, you seem to think that the rest of the community (well, except for a few lockstep compares,) are obviously not quite as enlightened as yourself.

We, and by "We," I mean: People Who Mostly Agree With You, but who have probably already checked every major news site while we were drinking our morning coffee (or listening to NPR on the drive,) and really don't derive any benefit from the redundant (since I've already read it on msnbc.com or, shit, maybe even FARK before I came here,) Newsfilter posts, and the unimaginative Rage Against the [and today's rage is...?] commenters therein.

A lot of us came here because we thought it was pretty funny to see cats on scanners.

If there's one thing that MeFi has taught me, over and over, it's that everyone we think is leftist is actually a centrist, and NOBODY here has any idea what a TRUE leftist is like (and we'd be blown away or have a heart attack or our heads would explode if we heard the words of a true leftist). Since Lenin's words strike me as being leftist, yet my head and heart are intact, I'm gonna have to say that Lenin must be a centrist, and there's no such thing as a passionate centrist (except for jonmc).
