I see ads on Metafilter September 5, 2006 9:17 PM   Subscribe

So, Um, I'm logged in and I'm getting upper right graphical ads on MeFi and AxMe. Is that on purpose? Because, y'know, I thought the purpose of being logged in all the time and having an account was to not have to see ads, and I didn't see an announcement that they'd be starting. Then again, if it's necessary to pay for bandwidth, OK, but I'd prefer a donation drive.

That didn't take long.

this beats my hope for a "what's the best software to block metafilter ads" ask.me :(

Eh...on a website, I'd prefer ads to donation drives, but vice versa on radio stations. Besides, for a graphical ad, it could hardly be less obtrusive.

I think you should post about this in every single question on Ask MeFi. It seems to be the thing to do tonight.

Speaking of, here's a greatest hits list of that whole mess, culled from separate questions:

I see no ads.

*disables adblock*

Ah, now I see. How cool is that timing - I installed adblock only an hour ago.

I've always shown small graphical ads on the front pages of mefi. There just haven't been small 125x125 ads purchased in a couple months.

If you want, I can do the ad hiding option.

Weird... I started seeing that one square ad today too, on Ask and MeFi. Maybe they changed something so the the FireFox adblocker doesn't pick it up.

(PithHelmet got it in Safari though.)

Ad hiding? Isn't the whole point that we see the ads? Just once, mathowie, I'd love you to say, fuck all you bitches, it's my site, it's one tiny ad, you'll all survive.

We used to have that ad for a while on the right side for that... well, I forget what it was, but when you moved your mouse cursor over it, it was a book that opened. That was around for months and months, though.

Anyway, since this thread is open, I can say this, and maybe the dirtycoast.com people will see it: your ad is misleading! The displayed girl is absolutely lovely to look at, light jade eyes and black hair and everything, and I don't see her on your site.

Please advise,
A Concerned Metafilter User

That's right, they've been there for years. What short memories we have. I note that nobody bitched when they stopped appearing ;-)

Hunh, it was there, but now it isn't. Weird.

Also, wouldn't the raising of concerns invalidate the triviality of a question?

Don't click that ad! It sends all your cookies to the NSA.

Hey Pink, I know his comments are pretty over the top, and I know that we both believe he's way over the top. But having pointed that out in separate threads now, the continuing pile on is unseemly. Especially as he doesn't seem to have the faculties to defend himself, and he's banned from commenting even if he could.

At some point, it becomes petty and mean to mock the now-banned guy for being paranoid, just like it would be petty and mean to point fingers at the "short bus", or any any other "wacky" personal belief (yellow moons, orange stars, green clovers, pink unicorns, the whole box of Lucky Charms) unsupported by the facts. Maybe we even laugh at their credulity behind our hands. But let's not be mean in public.

orthogonality: But let's not be mean in public.

They thought banning jamie939 would put an end to the weird craziness.

They were wrong.

I kid because I love.
And I don't really have anything else to do right now.

I thought to myself, "What ad?", then I realized, "Oh yeah, Adblock." (Combined with the filterset updater extension, I don't even have to think about it, ever. Great stuff.)

I must once again announce my personal disapproval of Adblock. If you visit a website (especially MeFi), its content must have value to you. If that website was not able to make enough money to stay up, it may not be there the next time you want to read it. By running Adblock, you deprive that very site of income and increase the likelihood that it'll be gone.

Cue the "But I'm only one person" comments.

I never click on ads anyway, so unless it's per-impression (which it usually isn't), I'm not generally providing ad revenue. Plus, I paid $5 to see this web site, show me a god damned nipple!

Besides, I'm only one person!

Actually, it was a cd cover and I miss it. It was truly mindless repetetive entertainment and I would play with it for oooh, about 10 seconds every day. Now I go around splatting defenseless insects to get my soothing thrills.

There's this thing called 'masturbation'.... (although the '10 seconds' suggests some weird pointless thing women call 'foreplay').

You're right Plutor, but there's a whitelist feature in adblock, so I see ads on MetaFilter when I'm not logged in, and on a few other sites I like too.

Never click on them, mind you, so it's more a mater of being polite than anything else.

PSH's comment is from 12:28 AM last night, which is only a minute after the other thread was opened, and before the offender was banned. Who's piling on?

blacklite, eat your heart out.

Embed probably won't work, so here's a link.

(it was an ad for coudal's jewelboxing)
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 6:54 AM on September 6, 2006

Adblock has the option to "Hide Ads" or "Remove Ads". One downloads the ads but doesn't show them, the other doesn't even download them. If you use "Hide Ads", the site still gets its pound of flesh (aka Ad revenue) and all it costs you is your soul. Your choice.

smackfu is right- I posted it here before (I saw) the other thread opened. I should have waited for that thread; I just wasn't sure if it was ever coming (silly silly me!).

Something reminded me of this thread, and I came back, and I continue to eat my heart out, because I was hoping gntfi's link was to the hot girl, not jewelboxing.

But, you know, yay jewelboxing, and all.
