Is there a ranking somewhere of who has had the most comments or posts favorited?

I really hope there isn't!

MetaFilter: This isn't a contest!

It would actually be interesting to see a list of who has saved other people's comments/posts as favorites most. (As sort of a guage of who's the biggest mefi fangirl/boy.) But the other thing-- who's had their own stuff favorited most, which is what I think you're asking-- is useless, and, should it exist, we would have to abolish it.

Never speak of it again.

Nuclear infatuation winged skyward darkly under a cloud of international suspicions. You could suppose the sky went out but it was more than that for in the darkened cloak of Earth lay the key. Tawdry and trite such a McGuffin but there is how the facts themselves lay. They had the meteor, hungrily infused with stable strangelets and a wanton carelessness that

The number of your comments that have been favorited by others is meaningless. What you have to do is take the number of comments that you have made site-wide since favoriting went live, and divide it by the number of comments that you have had favorited. That is your M-Score and means everything.

On the one hand, the ratio of your posts marked favorite by others to total posts is an interesting statistic. In the questions with conflicting answers, I would consider the "flavor fav ratio" in deciding whose advice to take. It helps indicate the strong silent types.

On the other hand, who gives a shit?

Not really. Favorites is a recent feature.

As an example, a post by frykitty from 2002 got mentioned on Metatalk today and now has 40+ favorites. A couple days ago it had none because...well, we didnt have favorites back then.

Is there a ranking somewhere for who has posted the most dots in obit threads?
posted by found missing at 1:30 PM on November 2, 2006

I've changed my mind. I think that such a list ought to be published. And that, in keeping with the ancient Athenian tradition of ostracism, the top favorited poster should be banned once a month. This would weed out people-pleasing crap and reduce conflicts.

well, my userpage says my count goes up every few days, but all i ever see is the same old comments on the saved favorites page. i'm told it has "issues".

I can't imagine how that would be useful. Maybe divabat will stop by and explain how she sorts through that many favorites.

That's funny, before there were favorites everyone used to always say "this is not a contest and we shouldn't do anything that turns it into one."

So, in a couple of years I expect to see MeFi finally catching up to the crapulence level of your typical phpBB/vB/IPB forums, with prominet "member since" and "post count" fields displayed next to each and every post, butt ugly smiley images automatically inserted when the user types some variant of :) (which he does between every other goddamn sentence), and complete with a god-awful oversized avatar image and obnoxious signature listing what brand of DVD-R blanks the poster uses and what kind of glow in the dark IDE cables are in his case appended to every single post.

I expect if you were to find the person with the most favourites, it would be someone who routinely posted funny, but assholish and off-topic comments.
posted by jacquilynne at 4:38 PM on November 2, 2006

I hate the idea of a popularity contest, but I check my favorites count every day. Also, I find myself choosing not to favorite comments when I don't want to be associated with them, even though I would like to bookmark them.

Perhaps I stand alone in my psychosis, but I doubt it..

You can favorite your own stuff, so having a scoreboard would just mean people would fake their high votes.

Favorites are overrated. We should have Hateds.

I would totally fucking kill in that contest. I would ad hominem you worthless noodleheads into the ground and then, just for good measure, I would flame out every couple of weeks just to up my score.

I could be legendary.

These favorites you speak of...they do not always mean what you think they mean.

Further to which, to repeat myself (as I do increasingly in my dotage (and even though it's far too late now (in more ways than one)), may or may not have been something Matt thought of when he decided to call the functionality 'favorites' (which connotes a thumbs-up to something), rather than the more neutral 'bookmarks' or 'fitznorbles' or something.

Perhaps it was unintended, perhaps he was deliberately hoping to Accentuate The Positive. I dunno. But there we are. For my part, I hesitate to favoritize (and thus somehow lend weight to) comments which annoy or bother me for some reason, but which I wish to revisit later for my own nebulously nefarious purposes, but I still do it sometimes.

stavrosthewonderchicken : fitznorbles

See, this is the kind of nonsensical banter that I would rail against. I would here call the ever respectable STWC a 'soppy reprobate', and then question his/her man-hood. Then I would make a statement like: All children should be aborted! Puppies for all. You slack jawed evolution-loving monkey-kin.
posted by quin at 11:12 PM on November 2, 2006

Apply quotation marks where you see fit, but clearly this stavros person (if that is his real name) is a Communist, and therefore deserves nothing but our pitchforks and torches.

I've heard rumors that STWC also kills kittens. Just because they are cute.

I think a lynching is in order here. Honestly... am I the only one who sees this?
