"Best Of" Contest December 1, 2006 10:16 AM   Subscribe

SUPER HOLIDAY POST MEGA GIVEAWAY!

So we're gonna do another "best of" post thing, this time for December, but this time, no daily winners, just a top three at the end of the month (and I'm sure plenty of honorable mentions). I'll buy a Nintendo Wii for the top spot, a iPod nano for 2nd, and a new iPod teeny clip shuffle for third. You have all month, no sockpuppet ballot box stuffing, and favorites votes will help steer me and jessamyn to the good stuff, but we'll make the final decisions based on our gut reactions to the best of the best. Good luck to all!

Step One: Eliminate jonson, y2karl, and matteo.
Step Two: ???
Step Three: Profit!

Well, I guess I can put off the job hunt for another month. Because lord knows the most important thing in life will be to get that Wii. Hopefully, this will be less shitfight-inducing than the previous contest ("Two dollars. I want my two dollars!").
posted by Eideteker at 10:35 AM on December 1, 2006

Holy crap.

Yeah, someone please assassinate jonson with a sodium azide car bomb or a lethal dose of fear itself or something.

FPPs are so passe. I'm holding out for the best of MetaTalk snark contest. First prize would presumably be a USB-enabled vibrating titanium pitchfork.

(Wii/iPoo/etc.)

Oh, and to get this out of the way:

As an atheist, I find the "holy day" giveaway title offensive. I will be contacting the ACLU to have an injunction served against MeFi's servers to prevent them from, well, serving pages for the month of December (right after I finish this killer FPP).

I still don't know what a Wii is. It's obviously cool, though.

Third prize is you're banned.

I think wheelieman is wondering that if he wins, he could please get 42% of a PS3, instead of a Wii.

I'll just watch the fistfights ensue from a distance. And come on! Less then half? You can afford more I'm sure.

My brother's wife just bought a Wii, and I'm off to play it tonight. I'll let you guys know if it's any good, or if you can just lay off the quality posts for a while.

Not that I'm likely to even make an FPP, but y2Karl's post doesn't qualify. By an hour.

This contest is useless without images.
posted by blue_beetle at 12:31 PM on December 1, 2006

Yeah, I'd be better off getting a part-time job at $10 an hour rather than spending the 30 hours it would take me to concoct a post worthy of winning. I feel depressed already.

Matthowie, instead of the Wii you owe me I'll take a gift-card.

Because here are pics of Britney Spears' vagina [nsfw, unless you work at a Brazillian wax place].
posted by bardic at 2:28 PM on December 1, 2006

I'm sure the daily contests were way too much work for you two, but frankly I think the prospect of three prizes in thirty days is not going to have a tremendous incentive effect. How about a weekly prize next time?
posted by anotherpanacea at 2:41 PM on December 1, 2006

Promise me an Apple phone and I will deliver an FPP so great that there will be no need for the site to even exist beyond January.

For a Wii I'll deliver mere "great."

posted by Stan Chin at 2:55 PM on December 1, 2006 [1 favorite]

Many of you already appear to have a Wii. May I be the first to suggest that if you win with your wonderful post, you consider donating it to charity. Specifically the 'quin really wants a Wii but is totally broke' home for unwanted gaming hardware. It's a great cause that I've been working with for a while now. They take cash contributions as well.

How about a weekly prize next time?

Four/mo. instead of three? Real paradigm shift there.

Chin, please say you're not joking.
posted by jonson at 3:33 PM on December 1, 2006

Four/mo. instead of three? Real paradigm shift there.

Four contests instead of one big contest. That means four different sessions of escalating competition, of dark horses and last minute postings, and four reasons for the site's best posters to go crazy. Compare that to one contest, that we're already half-convinced has been won, and it appears to be a superior model.

How about this: January 1, compare December to August. Spend some time looking at each day's worth of posts. If you, bardic, think December has more, better posts than August did, then I'll send you $5.

Indeed. I don't know how they all find such consistently good stuff. Probably better if we all just place bets on which one comes 1st, which 2nd, and which 3rd...

(scurries off to do some thinking about FPPs)

could a post to Metafilter Music take one of the prizes?

That's a damn good question. If the answer is yes, it might pull Metafilter Music out of the (you'll pardon the expression, I'm sure) ghetto that it's in.

Since the Wii will be obviously purchased in the US, does this mean that those of us in other parts of the world need not apply?
