Boston meetup January 2006 December 26, 2006 6:09 AM   Subscribe

Boston meet-up, Saturday, January 20. I propose we meet at the Milky Way in JP for beer, pizza and bowling, but I'm open to suggestions for locations downtown or in Cambridge, Brookline Somerville, etc.

Ooops. Not a bug. S'posed to be gatherings...

Can't make that weekend in particular -- in fact, January's all balls-up -- but I think the idea is a great one. I've been dying to go to Milky Way ever since I moved here.
(Goddamn that bugs category!)

I also will be out of town that weekend, but would make a later event.

That theorhetical time and place are theorhetically good, in theory.

God I miss JP.

Would love to!
Tell me where and when-- I'm dying to get outta the house after the holidays!

Let's say 7 PM at the bar in the Milky Way. Unless other local MeFites prefer somewhere else. I love in Roslindale so the MW is close to home for me, but I'd rather have a bigger group than avoid cab fare, so if there are some MeFites who prefer Cambridge, that's fine, too.

Is there any way to get there on the T from Allston that involves fewer than three buses?
posted by nonane at 10:49 AM on December 26, 2006

The Milky Way is a short walk from the Jackson Square stop on the Orange Line.
posted by mds35 at 11:02 AM on December 26, 2006

I'll come. I'm in Allston so it's kind of a hike, but the Milky Way sounds like fun.

Is it just me, or does a meetup at the Milky Way sound vaguely Arthur Dent-ish? </derail>
posted by monju_bosatsu at 1:58 PM on December 26, 2006

Wait! A Boston meetup that's actually in Boston? There's some rule that they have to be across the river, I think.

(The Milky Way is an excellent venue for this. I'll try to make it.)

I've been looking for an excuse to get down to Boston for the weekend. Can anyone suggest a decent hotel near The Milky Way?
posted by suki at 3:55 PM on December 26, 2006

I don't know if you'll find decent accommodations within walking distance. But it's an easy shot from downtown, which would be more fun to stay in for non-meetup stuff. Personally, I'd Priceline a room in "downtown/financial district" or "copley sq"-- both of the neighborhoods are interesting and on the Orange Line, which would be the train you'd take to Jamaica Plain and the Milky Way.

If I'm not mistaken, Nerd Nite takes place at the Milky Way on January 20th. Nerd Nite is grad students and other enthusiasts giving talks about their research or interests while drunk people heckle them. Not saying that's a reason not have the meetup, just be prepared to learn some useless nerdy information while you're there. I might be helping give a talk. If so, I'll give a big MeFi shout out.

Also, hi everyone, this is my first post.

7PM?! Balls to you, I say. BALLS. I work until at least 9 and it takes an hour to get the train into Beantown.

Can't you guys party on a Sunday or something?

Grapefruitmoon--
I'll be coming in from Woostah-- if you get offa work early can I give you a ride?
I am not a stalker, and those are not breathing holes in the trunk of my car.

Dizzy: Can't say as I'm on your way, man. Unless you're going to Boston via Finland or something.

I'll see what I can do about the getting offa work. I'll drop you a line if they set me free at a reasonable hour.

sleevener, according to the site you linked to, Nerd Nite is the 30th, not the 20th, and at the Midway, which is in JP but at a different address. Even so, please do come by and share some nerd stuff with us. And welcome, btw!

grapefruitmoon, I have never been to a meetup before, but I don't expect it to be over so soon. If you want to come, email me. I'll send you my mobile number and you can call me when you get off work and see if it's still happening.
posted by mds35 at 8:37 PM on December 26, 2006

mds35: Cool, I'll send you a line.

The only thing is I'm in Prov, so there's the bloody transit time as well. Fuckin' a.

sleevener: "Not saying that's a reason not have the meetup, just be prepared to learn some useless nerdy information while you're there. I might be helping give a talk. If so, I'll give a big MeFi shout out."

1) Useless nerdy information? It's like MeFi in the real world!
2) Goddamnit I wish I could come. I envy you all.
posted by Plutor at 3:42 AM on December 27, 2006

grapefruitmoon, can you say BALLS again? That was funny.

mds35: "...the 30th, not the 20th, and at the Midway, which is in JP but at a different address."

Well... oops. I always get the two places mixed up, apparently even when I've read their names in print within several seconds of one another. The Nerd Nite site has the date wrong, too. Not like that matters now, or here. Hm.
posted by sleevener at 7:31 AM on December 27, 2006

So we can count on you sleevener?

I'd love to come. My first meetup, woo!
posted by tentacle at 8:19 AM on December 27, 2006

Sorry to be unclear, mds35, NN is actually the 20th despite what the site says, and I think I'm helping give a talk. Thanks, though. I'll give a MeFi shoutout anyway.
posted by sleevener at 8:26 AM on December 27, 2006

Oh well. Hopefully I will be nerd enough for everyone.

So who wants to volunteer to do a Nerd Nite report on MeFi?
posted by robocop is bleeding at 2:28 PM on December 27, 2006

I have a habit of signing up for these things and then bailing, but hopefully I can break the latter part of that cycle with this meetup!

Ah, been meaning to check out the Milky Way but I can't make it that weekend either. Have fun!

Metafilter: just be prepared to learn some useless nerdy information while you're there.

Anyway - hey, I might be able to actually make this one!

Looks like we may have a decent crowd. I'll post a reminder (to gatherings, his time, not to bugs) next week to corral a few more folks.

I've been to most nerdnites since I moved to Boston - nerdnite doesnt really get started until at least 9....I'd be more than happy to share a cab between venues, if anyone wants to be a splitter part of a metafilter nerdnite delegation. Apparently this time they're including some bands to play between/after nerdnite speakers, for better or for worse. Points to robocop for namechecking the meetup in LilBucner's 'How do I fall in love w/Boston' post - would've missed it otherwise.

the number of this metafilter post is 'leets'!

Hmm....

I really like the notion of "finding others in the Milky Way." The concrescence of warm-bodied community out of the cold vagaries of virtual, internet space.

It sounds so . . . existential: beautiful and desperate at the same time. Perhaps I shall come.

(Not to mention the Milky Way is a cool, little joint to have drinks at.)
posted by MasonDixon at 8:40 AM on January 12, 2007

Crap. The Milky Way updated their site since I posted this. They are having salsa night on the 20th. There will be dancing, loud music and a cover charge. I for one would rather be able to just sit and shoot the shit with the MeFites who show up. I think we need a new location. What do you all think? Should we all just go to Nerd Nite instead?
posted by mds35 at 10:33 AM on January 12, 2007

I think a new post soon would be a good idea. If only as a reminder.

From the nerdnite email I just rec'd:

11:15: The Shrinking Islands

The Midway is a small venue...Perhaps Doyle's Cafe? Or, somewhere closer to downtown?
