But at least one should be on the outside December 29, 2006 10:30 PM   Subscribe

I know that FPPs should have, like, links and all, but it doesn't seem so terribly strange that a bunch of 'em would be all inside, at least not ban-worthy strange.

It was and is a timeout. Meatbomb has been here long enough that the "post must contain links" guideline should not have been a stretch. Additionally the "wicked big link barf" idea had been done once recently and would make a bad recurring feature here if done too often.

I think that comment was supposed to insinuate that your youtube post somehow encouraged Meatbomb to make his post. Really though he was probably just high off his ass and thinking about treaties, as per usual.

StickyCarpet, what's the point of this post? Do you disagree with giving meatbomb a timeout?

He already got one once for flooding the site with text from treaties, so he makes a linkless post dumping a bunch more. I read it as a fuck you to the community and a mocking of stavros' post but he says that wasn't the intention.

Whatever the motivation behind it, it just seemed like a lame look-at-me post because hey, he's the wacky treaty guy and here's a post about treaties and isn't that wacky?! and I thought it was lame and abusing the community to make a joke.

I wish we had some sort of img tag, so I could post an image of a bomb made out of meat, that was hitting some sort of red cross hospital or school or something, with a caption that reads, "Is mathowie doing enough to protect our children?" Because that would be much simpler to just show, instead of to describe like this.

Email me for your booklet of slips. Right now I'm real strong on a quonsar-amberglow-dios trifecta in the 3rd quarter, but that's like a billion to one. But that's ok, a little goes a long way at those odds.

It's kind of like the art school/theater posse/insert-breakfast-club-reference-here of the web.

Anyway, I agree that the post should have been deleted. Since he already had a timeout previously it shows a troubling pattern to go off and be all "push the format" / "special snowflake"-ish.

Just to back this idea up (of a New Improved Meatbomb), he contacted me asking for further explanation of an offhand criticism *cough*snark*cough* I tossed at him a few weeks ago. He was genuinely concerned with being a more meaningful contributor to the MetaFilter community. He may not be getting it quite right yet, but the intention is there. The treaty post was pretty interesting, lots of good reads; I'll venture he was posting what he knows and loves, not thumbing nose at his bros.

Or a graphic adaptation a la The 9/11 Report.

You could have a FPP post linking to all the cool Web 2.0 post-modern self-consciously ironic things people are doing with the Treaty of Westphalia these days.

I'd like to live in that world.

(But then I liked Settle too, so don't listen to me.)

I remember reading Metafilter since its inception, and before I felt moved to acquire an account in the summer of '02, Settle was consistently one of the more entertaining members. His posts, and the subsequent yelling matches, were a considerable bit of fun.

The thing about metafilter, like many places on the internet, is that you end up with a very wide range of personalities, including those people who are blissfully unaware of the normative standards of social protocols--the otherwise quiet wallflowers are given a less personal medium to start engaging in dialogue. Subsequently, they start to behave strangely, or like pricks, over the most inane things (see: arguments so insensitive and misguided about someone's FPP that the point is lost in the clamour over their complete inability to be nice).

I don't actually think Metabomb seems to be one of the "jerks", but he does seem to have a bit of trouble gauging the normative standards of Metafilter and abiding by them (or testing their limits more subtly, at least).

On the other hand, he might just be high.

His weird treaty fetish truly isn't as interesting as the weird disparate poetry links that Settle used to toss around, though, nor as interesting as Miguel's dissertations on their relevance to Metafilter.

As long as we're swapping Meatbomb stories, I have one. I occassionally check my user page to see if any people have added me to their contacts so that I can add them to mine because it seems like the nice thing to do. I checked it one day and I saw that Meatbomb had added me as a contact. As the reason for adding me as a contact it said "met sibling". So I checked his profile and found his e-mail address and sent him an e-mail asking when he had met my little brother. He wrote back saying he hadn't put down that he had met my sibling, but that the two separate reasons that he had listed for adding me as a contact were that we had met and that he was my sibling. He said something about how he put down that he was my sibling because all men are really brothers, and I guess he put that we met because all people have really met or something. So I wrote back and said "You're crazy aren't you?" and he wrote back and said "No" so I added him as a contact. The end. True story.

I was kinda thinking the treaty FPP might be some sort of catharsis for him, and he wouldn't ever have to bring treaties up again, since there had been an authoritative FPP on it. Like all the treaty talk was building up to this defining, proud moment, and after he made his indelible mark, he could move on open up a new chapter in his life or something.

But then, I woudn't entirely discount the "abusing the community to make a joke" thing, either.
