I would like to thank parmanparman for unleashing the snark beautifully. The delivery was perfect.

"unleashing the snark" is a curious phrase for an unhelpful Westphalia-level copy/paste spree. This isn't something to encourage.

Not something to encourage, maybe...

but so freakin hilarious...

Are you seriously calling out a bunch of pseudo-helpful answers in an AskMe thread that I contributed in and acting like it's something other than assy? I was trying to err on the side of "well gee maybe parmanparman is just a little cut and paste retarded" but now I'll just go in and elide elide elide.

This reeks of collaborative shenanigans. daninnj and parmanparman are in cahoots! Cahoots, I tell you!

For the record, I was using the place he mentions in his profile. It's Danninj's fault they didn't put the place of origin in the original post.
posted by parmanparman at 1:12 PM on January 26, 2007

actually, let me rephrase that: way to be a total dick parmanparman. For the record, in case anyone is confused, the thread included several lenthy crapfloods of weather data, I assume making fun of the OP for being a bit vague about the day he's looking for. Every comment of his in that thread was originally several hundred/thousand words.

Dear AskMe,
Can you tell me what day it was that I had a ham sandwich back in 1997? I think I was wearing a blue shirt that day, and it was humid. kthnxbye

I posted this before the error was revealed. I think the snark was appropriate, frankly, because I don't understand how supporting this type of question won't result in a flood of "My foot itches. Why? PS: I wear green socks."

Not that I'm questioning your judgment or anything. I'm just confused, because an appropriate response to a question where not enough information is given is to list the possible days which could fit the criteria, thus making the point that AskMe is not a crystal ball.
posted by nasreddin at 1:14 PM on January 26, 2007

i was just there, flagging everything before i realized what was happening.

sorry.

It's not a question about the weather! It's a question about a day in the wintertime when the stock quotations were unavailable for hours. If such a day existed, it shouldn't be super tough to track down and verify.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 1:16 PM on January 26, 2007

I think the snark was appropriate, frankly, because I don't understand

Full stop. You just said it all.

Snark is not appropriate in Ask.MetaFilter.

The poster asks for days the stock market was shut down. I assume he realizes that it snowing in winter in NJ was not enough to go on; he threw that in to indicate that it was January or February, not as a means of narrowing it down further.

Also, seconding amro. Elide away.

Sorry.

I, for being a total dick, apologize.
posted by parmanparman at 1:18 PM on January 26, 2007

I don't think the question deserved that much snark. This "and something happened with the stock market" part at least gives us something to go on.

If the question had just been "Does anyone remember a day in 2000 or 2001 when it snowed" and further failed to give a location, then yeah, the snark would be well-deserved.

Though still inappropriate for AskMe.

Flagging it as noise would be appropriate. Writing an email to Matt or Jess would be appropriate. Shitting voluminously in the thread is right out.

Geez, apologizing has suddenly made me really sentimental. I just apologized to my boss for being late to work. I hope this isn't the start of a trend but I am getting a little teary.

Those fair Ellidian fields,
With weeds and broken stems, in haste,
Doth make the rabble rout
That waste
The day he yields.

Snark is not appropriate in Ask.MetaFilter.

I can't tell you what's appropriate in Ask.Metafilter, but I can tell you that there's no shortage of snark (or, as I like to call it, snottiness) there.

yz pinpoints the day the OP was trying to remember in the AskMe thread!

nasreddin : "an appropriate response to a question where not enough information is given"

You mean, a question unlike the one in question, which does give enough information, as can be seen by the fact that yz answered it correctly?

Well, an appropriate response to a question like that would be not to respond.
An appropriate response to a question like this one, which is wholly different than that one, would be to give a helpful or correct response.

posted by delmoi at 2:22 PM on January 26, 2007

I, for one, thought it was such a loosely asked question that perhaps it was a snark itself about the derth of badly asked questions on AskMe.
posted by parmanparman at 2:41 PM on January 26, 2007

By derth do you mean spate?
posted by cortex at 2:45 PM on January 26, 2007

I don't think you mean dearth.

Or maybe you've reached a new level of sarcasm that exceeds my ability to grasp it. I could see it going either way, really.

Wow, didn't see this 'til now. I didn't see it as snarky. I just thought thought he was trying to be a little too helpful. Or something. I included the snow part because it's one of the things I best remember about the day and it confirmed the January or February remark.

Sorry if I ask stupid questions. I just have a memory of weird stuff.
posted by daninnj at 3:23 PM on January 26, 2007

The funniest part is that given the NASDAQ data point yz references, the weather info is actually useful. It confirms there was snowfall in the Northeast on 2/18/2000 and basically serves as verification of the question.

I thought the question was perfectly valid, although we're pretty unlikely to see a double post...

I just thought thought he was trying to be a little too helpful. Or something.

Good-natured innocence overpowers 'snark' and grinds its face into the dirt every time, and with such effortless ease that the innocent isn't even aware anything has happened.

Pleased to meet you, and more power to you, danninnj.

If parmanparman was a cat, I'd put him in the Cat Spa.

I would like to thank fandango_matt for unleashing the snark almost perfectly. An imperious gesture of contempt, relying for its comic incision on a recent event which was itself a source of much snarkiness and disputation, enjoyed by everyone involved. The only way to improve that comment would be correct use of the subjunctive mood.

Zap Branigan?

It was an afternoon... no... a late afternoon... in the early part of this century... one of those very early years, a very low-numbered year; and I was thinking... no, reminicing - about a time - when I was doing nothing in particular, except for some minor things which I recall as of no special import to anyone but myself... and it snowed - oh yes, it snowed...heavily... where I was. And something... happened - some... thing occured, a thing of great interest and significance... related... indeed connected... with the stock market...
