Not the nicest guy in the world, that's for sure. But he seems to hold to a consistent ideological standard. I think he may have spent some time over amongst the Freepers, and therefore his discussion board etiquette is on a par with what is typically seen there. I doubt calling him out on it will have much effect, but I see your point, y2karl.

real9 is a realjerk. I'm not sure if it's Matt's policy to smite jerks. Precedent seems to indicate that it's not. In which case, I'll go right on ignoring real9 while he goes right on with getting his panties in a bunch over 'narcissistic liberals'.
UncleFes, revbrian, Steven Den Beste and others seem capable of presenting Conservative viewpoints on MeFi that both respect and contribute to the discussions they participate in. The fact that real9 has chosen not to do so implies, for me, a complete disinterest in the MetaFilter community.
It's one thing to have a differing opinion. It's quite another - as I've said before - to care not at all for (and show no respect to) those you are discussing with.

Ah, rcade, I see what you mean. I've let him get to me.
You know, after his first Chelsea Clinton link, a whole brouhaha opened up over hincandenza's following comment. Things really got nasty then.
"We're all in this together"?
That's the part that gets me--there's a lot of people here on the right end of the spectrum that are civil and reasoned. Lord knows, I probably don't agree with billman on anything and I've already apologized to jfuller for getting on his case here. I can respect them, they actually stand for something and they're wll-mannered on the whole.
Real9?.... It's the whole chickenshit aspect of the anonymous user page and the trollery and near zero positve contributions. The noise to signal ratio is so far aslant. It's like he shows up, throws a grenade in and then pops off. That's his contribution.
OK, I wil ignore him from now on.

Marquis,
Your post seems to imply that conservatives must in a deferential manner (and in small numbers) offer respect to your assumed community of liberals here on Metafilter.
And, let's add your insult "real9 is a realjerk".
I'm not interested in communal nodding. And, if I'm causing cognitive spasms by being direct, good!

Real9 -- I think Marquis' point was not that conservatives have to express their opinions civilly, but that everyone has to.

I'm a little aghast here. I've looked at all the posts y2karl linked to by Real9, and although a common theme of obnoxiousness and dismissal of other people's views certainly does become clear, I saw nothing that uncivil or insupportably unpleasant...
I hesitate to think what a careful read through my comments over the past year and a bit, carefully pulling out the anti-Amurrika screeds and drunken misjudgements might reveal.
I like y2karl. We are in touch frequently via email, and I enjoy his presence here. But on this thing, I think we part ways. I don't like Real9 much, and I agree he (or she) can be annoying as hell, but, at least amongst the comments that y2karl linked to, I can't see anything that justifies this here dogpile.

stavros, I'm ambivalent about bringing it up--I've made stupid comments and posts here, too, but the constant baiting got to me. The fine tuning on his comments was the epitome of passive-aggressive--the patronizing tone, the flip flop hypocrisy--sieg heil crack here, invoking Godwin there, the carefully worded verging-on-racial slurs to get a rise out of the 'self-hating liberals'--what was his point overall? That we're all despicable and inferior to his mighty intellect? Point made. It's not like he took a principled stand on anything, said anything about what he most cared about. It's not as though he ever talked about what he liked.

Real9 and fold clearly attended the same charm school, but their politics are at polar opposition to each other.

I saw a few, though admittedly some of his posts have impressed me. If he would tone down some of the personal invective -- like calling people Nazis and deriding someone for being foreign -- he'd have little trouble fitting in here. Especially if he offered an e-mail address in his profile so people had the option to contact him off the site.
