Anybody attending one of the MeFi gatherings, how about posting some pictures?
posted by luser to MetaFilter-Related at 7:44 AM (65 comments total)

Y'know...part of me wants to see what you people look like, but another part of me likes the mental pictures I've concocted for each of you.
posted by ColdChef at 11:08 AM on March 22, 2002

Chef, rest assured your mental pictures are innacurate, when I went to the NYC meet absolutely nobody looked like I expected, same thing when I've image-googled a few favorites, although I gotta say for a buncha webgeeks, we're a goodlooking bunch.

Good thing I didn't show up then.

aaron, for some reason I picture you looking like my old buddy Ed who taught me most of what I know about computers, probably because your writing style reminds me of how he talks...and Ed has a really hot girlfreind.

Is there any interest in another Seattle MeFi gathering? I missed the last one, because I wasn't that aware of MetaTalk at the time...
posted by patrickje at 12:21 PM on March 22, 2002

Hey, would it be unreasonable to suggest "gatherings" as it's very own MetaTalk thread? It seems like there'd be enough interest and specific material (however intermittent) to feed it.

It'd be a nice bit of community for those of us unlikely to be able to attend one in the flesh anytime soon.

BTW, for any interested, I'd love to set up something in the PacNW... Portland Oregon, more specifically, since I can't really afford to travel.

Looking at 3rd week of April. Any interested?
posted by SpecialK at 12:47 PM on March 22, 2002

Can you come up to Seattle SpecialK?

I am thinking end of april, beginning of may timeframe.
posted by patrickje at 12:50 PM on March 22, 2002

How about upper-midwest MeFi? Like, my ass is too lazy and too broke to get to Chicago. Even though it's only two hours away. Besides, the cultural divide between Wisconsin and Chicago is too big to try and bridge.

Here's a list of zip codes gathered from members who've entered it in. This should be of some help to anyone looking for members from their area.
posted by riffola at 1:06 PM on March 22, 2002

Uh, I meant to say category of thread up above, like MetaFilter-related, which gatherings are, I suppose, but maybe enough of their own thing that they should be grouped differently.
posted by dong_resin at 1:07 PM on March 22, 2002

I know there was some interest in a London meeting a while back but nothing ever got done. I'm still interested if anyone else is.

I just want to suggest a spring edition of the New York MetaGathering. The last one happened right before I joined, and I'm still sad I missed it. Though I'm a bit of a recluse, I would come gladly out of the compound to drink with y'all. And I would take pictures.

I wonder where the Canadian MeFi'ers are situated? I'm curious whether Montreal (where I'm at) has any population? If memory serves, there's at least a handful in Toronto, and a few in Ottawa, but how 'bout in Canada's best city?

I would like to see a Manhattan gathering, please.....

rocketman:

You're from Madison? I just moved to seattle, I had lived in Madison for 8 years...I soooo prefer Madison over Seattle.

I know there are at least two other Montrealers here, Marquis.

I'm ex-Montreal myself, now in Calgary.

yeah sure and it's easy to arrange. but why the end of april as opposed to say, next weekend? I vote for April 7th MeFiSeaThree. Any takers?

I'm up for it (seattle MeFi) , just didn't think everyone had the same (read: blank) schedule as me.

London: I can make that, i'm in Oxford. Any others in S.E. England?
posted by dash_slot- at 6:37 PM on March 22, 2002

Aw, I'm with SpecialK. You Seattlites (orbiting, as it were, the glorious NW nexus that is my -- your -- OUR -- Portland, Oregon) should all haul ass on down to our burg on a weekend.

Cuz, y'know, I'm too lazy and broke to go to Seattle.
posted by cortex at 6:43 PM on March 22, 2002

MeFiSeaThree: Any chance of making it Sat. 6th, instead? (got to get back to the Tri-Cities and work on Monday morning...) Come to think of it, Portland would be good...

any of the NYC mefi-mob, I'll actually be in the big apple tommorrow afternoon, send an email maybe you can meet me and my pals for a drink..

patrickje:

I've been in Madison for six years; it's okay, if a little bit small for my tastes. I'd always thought the Pac NW would be a great place to flee to, but I'll think a little bit harder about that. Thanks for the tip.

Why the move?
posted by rocketman at 7:28 PM on March 22, 2002

how about mid-day or early evening on the 7th so Portlanders could get back home at a reasonable hour [and carpool]? You know I took the bus up and back a few weeks ago and found the price really cheap, if youre not into the driving thing.

My wife is from the Seattle area, and wanted to move back to be near her family.

*grin* I am being reasonable.

That's my first weekend of homework. Driving 3 hours each way is pretty much out of the question along with full-time work and company coming later in the week.

I'd be up for a meeting.

Hell, stavros, I'll meet you in Seoul if you'll put me up and score tickets to some World Cup games.
posted by Ufez Jones at 11:12 AM on March 23, 2002

I'm employed, Ufez, but only just! And anyway, at the risk of sounding like a big gurlyman, sports and I parted ways a long time ago. My primary interest in the World Cup will be the culture clash that's gonna happen when thousands of drunken soccer hooligans descend on Hooker Hill in Itaewon.

I lived in Sydney during the Olympics and didn't go there, either.

I am a bad man.

(That said, if any MeFites are planning to come to Korea for the World Cup and are willing to talk about something other than soccer, about which I know nothing, I'll be happy to buy you a few beers. Drop me a line. The wife might (read, 'would') object to mystery lodgers in our rather small apartment, though...)

I was at Chelsea Commons in NYC all nite tonight and not a single MeFite in attendance. Of course, no way for me to know, is there?
Ah well, good to be in the city and hello to the NYC MeFi Mob, wherever ya are. Me and the legendary Rob the EMT are having a blast. Cheers, y'all!!
posted by jonmc at 10:42 PM on March 23, 2002

Oh, you'd know me, jonmc... Too bad I couldn't make it. I'm going to NYC on Tuesday, so a weekend trip would have been redundant. We need to plan ahead for Manhattan MeFi. C'mon people. PLAN! PLAN!

posted by evanizer at 4:20 AM on March 24, 2002

Why don't we just set a date for a Manhattan MeFi a month from now? late April-ish. That should be enough advance warning. Any preference for weekdays vs. weekends?

Anyone have any more concrete ideas, dates on the MeFi Seattle?
posted by patrickje at 12:40 AM on March 25, 2002

Seattle! I will be there. I know I promised to be there last time, but food poisoning from raw oysters laid me low. I like that suggestion of a Sunday afternoon get together...just to throw this out there, my favorite Sunday watering hole is the Trolleyman Pub at the Redhook Brewery in Fremont...they're never busy on Sundays, and the beer is good, and the ambience is great. There are no distractions (darts, etc.) so maybe it's not a good choice...but just a thought!

I intend to put a blue dot on my nametag at all conventions I attend from now on, regardless of the anticipated presence of other Metafilterians. It'll give me an air of mystery, I think.
