Su I think you need to put away your officer's hat and don the chill cap for a while.

A link to the metacritic reviews would be more helpful and actually provide some fodder for discussion. Y'know, like the link is supposed to do. I don't care about talking about Star Wars, I love talking about Star Wars, it's just a sucky post and we shouldn't be afraid to say that.

What Matt said! People are not going to talk about what some reviewer has posted online; people are going to talk about the movie itself. A generic link to www.google.com would be as relevant to the discussion as a link to metacritic.
This is just like some sports championship thread showing up on a guitar playing message board. It happens so learn to deal with it. aaronshaf thoughtfully kept the writeup to one line, so those who were not interested could easily skip over it.
Getting stressed over something this trivial leads to early heart disease.

skallas: "and people should label their posts spoiler if they're going to go on about the movie"
skallas: "If you don't want to be spoiled, stay away from information"
skallas: "I don't see why the initial post has be amazing when thousands of readers can chime in in the thread.
The idea that there's some formula for a good post just helps kill the weird diversity we really crave. Admit it cravers!
"
Nothing personal, mate - it just tickled my memory. ;)

su: you're going to catch a lot of shit for bringing this up, especially on the heels of your last metatalk post...
but you are one hundered percent correct.
both threads should be deleted. i don't care how many comments they have. each one baldly flouts site guidelines. is it the end of the world? no. but it will soon be the end of metafilter if we continue allowing shitty threads to proliferate.

Wow, you're edgy and sexy. I'll bet you have a motorcycle, or perhaps have seen one at some point.
This trend is getting pretty out of hand. Announcement by studio of [movie X]? Link posted. Initial previews of [movie X]? Link posted. Postproduction previews of [movie X]? Link posted. Premiere of [movie X]? Link posted. Have you seen [movie X]? Sigh . . . link posted.

Why not protest by refusing to post comments??? Then perhaps they will get the hint and stop posting tripe. It has worked for me on occasion (aka you peeps don't comment ergo I know not to post such crap again)...

I think it's important that people stick up for the guidelines here on MetaTalk regardless of its actual effectiveness. It's not about influence; it's about principle.
People who criticize Su are just criticizing MetaFilter's/Matt's guidelines in a roundabout way. If you don't like the guidelines, criticize them, discuss hypothetical changes, do something positive and direct. Saying "boys will be boys" is just stating the obvious.
I'm very liberal regarding posts but that's, paradoxically, a luxury afforded me by the fact that the great majority of fellow users stick to the guidelines("no linkee, no postee" in rushmc's immortal words)and that people like Su are not afraid to point out cases of flagrant disregard.
[No, not fragrant Stav. We'll have no farting jokes today, thank you very much. ;)]

Mlang: Yeah, I figure I probably will get some shit. Eh. Part of the purpose of this is that most people who argue against this kind of post try to make some sort of claim that "it doesn't happen every day." Well, here's the second time in two days I've done this. Then there's the Vanilla Coke post. And the one with absolutely no link at all before that.
Gloege: I didn't comment. I put nothing in there other than the standard "MetaTalk" with link to corresponding thread. All possibilities were left open for someone to at least make an attempt at linking, which actually happened immediately after my comment.
If what you mean is not to comment at all, then you're basically saying to just let the site devolve into a bunch of little subject-based ghetto factions. I accept that people want to talk about the war(to point out one of the more obvious groups), but they at least continually find new information to link to, generally. They don't just make all their posts point to say, an on-line copy of Bush's declaration.

people bitching about people bitching. could anything be more useless? it's as though they think any complaint is instantly invalid, just by the nature of being a complaint.
get a clue! some things do not belong on mefi, and one of the goals of metatalk is to talk about which is which and make visiting mefi a more rewarding experience. if the best thing you have to offer is "quit complaining!" then keep it to yourself because it doesn't help the discussion at all and just makes you look like a sourpuss.

Hmm...
This is indeed a disturbing trend, and the old link vs. discussion debate now continues. However, a link is required for a discussion. The fact that this was a double-post, and that the poster essentially made MeFi into a messageboard, as skallas has already pointed out, is wrong. Frasermoo, mischief, and those who agree with them...you are misunderstanding the purpose behind MetaFilter. Sure, the site has evolved over the years, however, the link remains crucial for the site's existence. Without proper Front Page Posts, this site goes to hell. The fact that this needs to be pointed out speaks volumes in regards to your respect for the site.
Beyond that, this site is not a chat session, which is what idiotic links like this create. MeFi receives millions of pageviews for inciteful links, along with usually intelligent commentary, not passe reviews of Star Wars.
