imminent death of Metafilter May 28, 2002 7:23 AM Subscribe
Posited : that the 'imminent death of Metafilter' that has been so long and often predicted is finally beginning to happen. Exhibit A : A tiny truncated little MeTa flatpage. Exhibit B : An average of about 12 comments each for the limp and lackadaisical posts in the blue in the last 24 hours... Is the Fat Lady singing? Is that a croco-tear in my eye?
Memorial Day weekend?
Just you wait. I give it 4 hours before we can all bask in the cheerful glow of an Israel-Palestine post with 80+ comments.

Not better at all. Although I did visit yesterday, I would have to say that most of us have loved ones and activities that extend beyond the confines of the Internet, to which we precariously venture from time to time.

Yeah, that'd be it : I have no loved ones or activities which extend out into the real world. Because I don't live in America or have any knowledge whatsoever of your nice holiday rituals.
Fuck you very much, Adam. That kind of humorless crypto-patriot bitchiness is precisely the reason people with any desire for intelligent conversation are leaving this place in droves. Lucky for me I don't care much for clever convo, huh?
My response - let me quote it for you in case it was unclear - 'Fuck you very much' - is equally the kind of talk that is destroying what's left of the traces of good and intelligence that still remain here. I bemoan that. Am I inconsistent? I reserve that right when I must defend myself against self-righteous little turds like you.
So, in summary : gently but inexorably, loveless intromission to you, and your precious little holiday too, amigo.

Wow, starvos. Dont' take it so seriously. I was being just a tad tongue-in-cheek, for chrissakes, and I meant no snideness towards you at all. It was a statement not directed towards you at all, really, but in half jest towards myself. You have no reason to defend yourself becuase there was no attack. Sorry if it seemed that way.
You know, I am feeling no need whatsoever to counter your rant. I am just going to write it off as a misunderstanding, and not respond to your personal attacks and name-calling. Give me the benefit of the doubt next time, would you? Thanks.

Right. So this woman? She's dying, and the only two things she loves in the world are her favorite red handbag, and her old horse.
So, as her last dying request, she has her doctor arrange to have the horse in by her deathbed. When the doctor brings the horse in, she sits up slowly, and with her last flicker of strength, puts the handbag around it's neck and kisses it on the nose. She lays back with a thump, dead.
The doctor, not knowing what else to do, takes the horse back out to the yard and leaves it there while he attends to his duties with the dead woman. The horse, however, understanding in some way the import of what has just happened, wanders off in a mournful state.
Eventually, he comes across a tavern. He wanders in.
Bartender says, "why the long face?"
At least, that's how I heard it.

As far as I'm concerned, a small MeTa page is a good thing. As I recall, Matt never intended(probably hoped) for it to be busy. While it's ostensibly here for "discussion [of] topics specific to MetaFilter itself, or weblogs in general," let's be honest: MeTa is mostly where we come to bitch.
There doesn't seem to be much to bitch about at the moment. Yay!
As for MeFi being slow, I think that's just all it is, and maybe the holiday is contributing to it some, also.

Mefi is slow, but stav's post uses the number of comments on each post as evidence of the impending doom. I'm not sure that's fair.
Mefi is both the comments and the links, and I think that the links have been average or even slightly above average in the last few days. I've actually clicked into many of the links. I'm satisfied with them. True, the discussions haven't been stellar, but they've been occasionally witty.
And as malphigian points out above -- the quantity of discussion about a link doesn't always correlate to the quality of the post. In fact, many posts (the links themselves) with lots of comments are pretty sucky.
I miss Rodii and Miguel as much as the next guy, but I'm not convinced that Mefi is dead yet. What would convince me is two weeks of mediocre / repeat / boring / links. But that won't happen. Will it? Will it?!
