What is this, RabbitFilter? July 19, 2002 9:30 AM   Subscribe

What is this, RabbitFilter? As of 12:24 EST (9:24 PST, 17:24 GMT), there are 14 threads, 10 of which are related to Flash and/or rabbits. When will the madness end? I'm no cuniculophobe, but could not several of the threads (which are indeed clever, witty, and linky) have been condensed into one or two good rabbit related threads?

You have to keep in mind that the posts, like rabbits, like to multiply. Every now and then a topic will just take off and everyone and their mother it seems will post something on this topic. Unfortunately, rabbits like to multiply, and they do so rather quickly, so I could see today with a lot more rabbit posts.

No, I don't think so. I prefer to think of them as individual gems, rather than a big, gaudy necklace, covered in stones. Looking at diamonds individually lets you enjoy the beauty of their carrots...er...carats.

God, I knew someone had to post a MeTa thread about this. Can we not simply enjoy the Friday, with a few zany links and good fun? How often does this happen? Israel, Bush, Gays, Fat people, Racism, Hunger, Poverty, etc.. will all be here tomorrow. Carpe Diem!

BTW, I'm having a great day...just bought a new CD by Clifford Brown, sipping my cappuccino, and relaxing to what feels like a perfect day here in the beautiful city of [insert city here]. I suggest, insomnyuk, you do the same.

thanks, insomnyuk, for this meta -- i was about to whine in a thread myself, and fortunately, you've started this topic, and already taken the flak for what is a legitimate gripe.

those flash game posts *did not* need to be three separate front page posts -- they would have all worked well enough in a single thread, with the added benefit of being more useful as an archive (meaning, should i want to check out a bunch of flash games recommended by mefi users, i could find them mostly in a single thread.) Post-bloat is bad: it nearly guarantees a couple of absolutely pointless threads, whereas should the redundant posts been made as comments, we could have a really quite wonderful, squarish (yeah, squarish), and cute little thread, like that little dot on your right cheek that dimples a bit when you smile.

of course, maybe then the posting user would miss out on all the public acclaim that will surely follow the posting of the umpteenth link to snowcraft, but i *will*, and i promise this, i *will* cheer them in my heart when i see their comment in the thread with a fun link. hopefully that will make up for it.

i have no problem with linkbacks -- it's clever, it's cute, i like themed things -- clubs, snacks, parks, porno -- but it shouldn't become an excuse to post wildly substandard links just because they seem to fit well in with a running gag.

and with that, i gladly take my cute little blue hat and plastic baton, for my official first foray into the MEFI GRUMPY CURMUDGEON JOYLESS HATEFUL BASTARDS TASK FORCE.

Seriously: let's do the little things to keep things neat; pick up your socks and put them in the hamper, make your bed in the morning, and don't scatter your toys all over the ground.

When I look at the front page of Metafilter today, it looks like the comments that should be under one lame-ass rabbit post somehow got barfed all over the page.
posted by jonah at 10:33 AM on July 19, 2002

My hat and baton, please? I'd like to join.

I'm all for jokes, lovelies. Even recurring jokes.

Just be aware that the more a joke recurs, the less amusing it gets, and when it comes to something like similar links-- that would be around link four or five (some would say sooner than that, but let's just call them killjoys and move on.)

Oh, right, and that's four or five links that can actually hold their own as FFPs. Really, if you want to contribute to a running gag, do make certain that it's something so interesting that the rest of the community can get more than a good-humored chuckle or annoyed expletive out of it.

Thanks for the humor. I had totally forgotten about that Seinfeld episode and had a jolly good laugh when I read that comment.

I have nothing against Flash games and bunnies, but what about having a single thread to do it in? I suggest having a weekly Friday thread for themed posts and flash sites. It would satisfy the need to have a little fun on Friday, but it wouldn't barf all over the front page.

skallas: what kind of mefi policing? (it's hard to tell which comment you're referring to)
posted by insomnyuk at 12:27 PM on July 19, 2002

"I crossed the staircase landing, and entered the room she indicated. From that room, too, the daylight was completely excluded, and it had an airless smell that was oppressive. A fire had been lately kindled in the damp old-fashioned grate, and it was more disposed to go out than to burn up, and the reluctant smoke which hung in the room seemed colder than the clearer air - like our own marsh mist. Certain wintry branches of candles on the high chimneypiece faintly lighted the chamber: or, it would be more expressive to say, faintly troubled its darkness. It was spacious, and I dare say had once been handsome, but every discernible thing in it was covered with dust and mould, and dropping to pieces. The most prominent object was a long table with a tablecloth spread on it, as if a feast had been in preparation when the house and the clocks all stopped together. An ©pergne or centrepiece of some kind was in the middle of this cloth; it was so heavily overhung with cobwebs that its form was quite undistinguishable; and, as I looked along the yellow expanse out of which I remember its seeming to grow, like a black fungus, I saw speckled-legged spiders with blotchy bodies running home to it, and running out from it, as if some circumstances of the greatest public importance had just transpired in the spider community.

"I heard the mice too, rattling behind the panels, as if the same occurrence were important to their interests. But, the blackbeetles took no notice of the agitation, and groped about the hearth in a ponderous elderly way, as if they were short-sighted and hard of hearing, and not on terms with one another.

"These crawling things had fascinated my attention and I was watching them from a distance, when Bunnyfire laid a hand upon my shoulder. In her other hand she had a crutch-headed stick on which she leaned, and she looked like the Witch of the place.

`This,' said she, pointing to the long table with her stick, `is where I will be laid when I am dead. They shall come and look at me here.'

With some vague misgiving that she might get upon the table then and there and die at once, the complete realization of the ghastly waxwork at the Fair, I shrank under her touch.

`What do you think that is?' she asked me, again pointing with her stick; `that, where those cobwebs are?'

`I can't guess what it is, ma'am.'

`It's a great cake. A bride-cake. Mine!'

I don't know, I think its awfully hypocritical of me to criticize her. Obviously she talks about MetaFilter a lot, but on the other hand, I've commented over a thousand times (MeFi + MeTa), and I haven't even been a member for a year. I guess this is just her way of fulfilling her need to talk on MeFi.

And Miguel, thanks for the drink.

If I learn anything today, it would be that excess is bad, whether it be excessively redundant MetaFilter front page posts, excessive chronicling of the events of a website in which you do not participate, or excessive drinking. But if I had to choose, I would probably choose excess #3.

I'm not sure if it's the odd affinity people after with looking at a train wreck, naivety, baiting, or just plain stupidity...but whatever the reason for discussing Mrs. Fire, here we are.

When she "left" way back when, how did she do it? In "flaming" glory...Whatever her afflictions, MeFi discovered one incontrovertible characteristic about bunnyfire: she loves attention, good or bad.

Wow, can I remember back to elementary school or junior high, when there was that one kid that always had his hand up in the air, knew all the answers, or thought he did anyway. When kids yelled to shut the hell up, he loved it. He was mad that they were angry, but to be noticed was enough. Some things never change, I suppose.

This thread is precisely what turns bunnyfire on. "They're talking about me, tee hee! And I'm not even there, and I'll never go back because I don't need them anymore. I'll never go back because MeFi sucks."

I suggest that everyone continue discussing her. What better way to make an ex-MeFier feel like she still belongs, than to discuss how sick and demented we think she is.
