16,000 member! September 18, 2002 11:47 AM   Subscribe

We've just turned over 16,000 members according to the front page. Our lucky number 16,000 is hans_1984 who wins this lovely MetaTalk thread. Welcome aboard, Hans!

Sorry Hans. This should have been in MetaFilter-related.

I thought I saw someone with a higher number than 16,000 a couple of days ago.

Or was it a dream?
posted by ginz at 12:06 PM on September 18, 2002

Actually, seems to me stevefromsparks is a lot closer to our 16,000th member. (16,000 and 16,001 are mysteriously blank -- is someone playing with the numbers?) Sorry Hans.

So, what does he win, a free bag of groceries or something?
posted by me3dia at 12:06 PM on September 18, 2002

Matt should do charity raffles for all the big round numbers. I just wouldn't want to be the one who has to explain the source of the funds to the befuddled recipient.
posted by stupidsexyFlanders at 12:14 PM on September 18, 2002

Relevant MeTa thread about user numbers, which implies that hans_1984 probably is closer to being the 16,000th member than stevefromsparks. Of course someone would like you to care less (last comment in linked thread).

I wonder if Hans is the first member to be dragged into MetaTalk who has never actually posted to MetaFilter.
posted by RJ Reynolds at 12:18 PM on September 18, 2002

Gotta be, RJ.

MUD, I missed that thread, thanks. I suppose, though, that considering the number of deleted accounts, unused accounts and duplicates, we're probably even further from our 16,000th member than we think.

Actually, seems to me stevefromsparks is a lot closer to our 16,000th member.

Member number 16,000 (who would have joined a week ago if he existed) isn't the same as the 16,000th member – who just joined (re-joined, apparently) this morning. The discrepancy is caused by the gaps in the user numbers that you identified.
posted by timeistight at 12:24 PM on September 18, 2002

Per, mud's comment above: everyone's user page by username instead of ID.

Great, I'll have to sit in the back row then, the peanut gallery... hee hee always was the best place.

Related comment about who the hell cares and why was this posted, anyway?

OMG! This is thread 2600, which is another round number.
And if you take 16000 and subtract Timeistight's user number, you get 1845, which is probably what I'm going to get called for opening my mouth again. Subtracting Miguel's user number, you get another person who's never posted a link. Actually, if you subtract the user numbers of everyone who's commented thus far and apply the results as user numbers, you get all people who've never posted a link. Um...wow. And stuff.

Yes, I just got home from work. I'll go in my corner now.

Ok, i_cola, since you're playing the nostalgia card, who are your Number Neighbours™?

My older neighbour is AntonS (a determined no-poster) and my younger neighbour, who joined just after me on that misty September 3 morn back in, erm, last year, is mrben (an upstanding Australian five-threader). I bet mine are better than yours!

*throws down the gauntlet*
posted by MiguelCardoso at 6:45 AM on September 19, 2002

Interesting, sorta. My neighbours (1) (2) are both total fucking washouts. No comments, no threads.

This makes me happy, unaccountably. The Cheese Stands Alone.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 6:49 AM on September 19, 2002

To find out your Number Neighbours Index (insert trademark sign) you multiply by 2 their number of links and add the number of comments. So mine NNI (all thanks to mrben's 5 links and 35 comments) is a very respectable 45. Hey, not all indexes can be as good as tamim's!
posted by MiguelCardoso at 6:50 AM on September 19, 2002

My neighbours are (1) and (2), which would make my NNIndex a very healthy 01. It doesn't get much lower than that. Well, stav's is lower.
posted by ashbury at 6:57 AM on September 19, 2002

Stav's is the freezing point mark - even his neighbours' homepage URLS are broken, for chrissakes. You should subtract at least 10 for that, I think.

Miguel: I'll be back with the answer b4 cocktail hour.
posted by i_cola at 7:27 AM on September 19, 2002

I dunno, Miguel - stav's NNI may be negative, but at least it's not undefined!
posted by madprops at 7:28 AM on September 19, 2002

I fare slightly better (worse) than stavros with an 8, sandwiched between Prospero (aka Dexter Palmer) and medievalist (aka Lisa Spangenberg). Hmmm, wonder if she is any relation to Hans?

mouse-over your username to find your number, ginz. Your neighbors are the numbers to either side.

posted by ginz at 8:51 AM on September 19, 2002

Actually, if anyone was really interested in your "MeFi Neighbors", we could probably figure it out for ourselves.

On preview....hey that's true, ginz. It used to give you your user number when you moused over....now it's just your username.
posted by Kafkaesque at 8:53 AM on September 19, 2002

I can see my usernumber when I mouse over, but don't know how to find the names going with my neighbour's numbers.

I like names......

ginz: you are http://www.metafilter.com/user.mefi/11784 so your neighbors are http://www.metafilter.com/user.mefi/11783 (truth2Btold2001) and http://www.metafilter.com/user.mefi/11785 (wildcat623). See how it works?

Sorry Hans. This should have been in MetaFilter-related.

Instead of pushing off another thread on the very limited front page, I'll just post my request to Matt here and hope that he reads it.

I think it would be a good idea to make the default category blank so if the person forgets to pick one, it will ask them to choose one. That would hopefully avoid having threads show up in the Bugs category by mistake.

We're all part of the post 9/11 pig-in-the-python MetaFilter demographics. Miguel managed to sneak in early enough so as to lead us second wavers to all assume he was an old timer.

Makes me feel downright verbose.
