MetaFilter And Metatalk Taglines October 3, 2002 8:00 PM   Subscribe

The Hopefully Somewhat Complete As Of Right Now List of MetaFilter And Metatalk Taglines, as tirelessly collected by dg. These are fabulous! We have such poets amongst us.

Damn, this is going to take a while. I've just scratched the surface so far; however, I immediately wanted to give mad props to quonsar for this one, but it's actually mischief's words. In the spirit of constructive criticism, I'd say the credit on each of these should go to the author, not the one who identified it as a tagline.

Likewise, kafkaesque gets credit for starting the entire "Oh. Oh dear." meme. It galls me to have to say it, but kaf has been one of my writing heroes since long before I could throw poo at him personally.

This is fucking great. I can't believe you dg.. you did it.. you actually sifted through.. all the... DO YOU HAVE A JOB?!

One thing though: "electrconic day-care center for maladjusted cranks/genuises?" is attributed to me, but Jonmc actually said it. I came up with a hilarious retort that should win me at least a first-place ribbon in the funny-fair, but Jonmc gets credit for the aforementioned.

Oh, yeah. I forgot that one.

Nice job, dg. Now I'm compelled to go back and obsessively track down the half dozen or so other ones that I remember proposing way back when, but didn't make you big list.

You bastard.

Ack. So now we can look forward to the inevitable rash of taglines by people who want to get on the list. (Though I guess if it keeps stav otherwise occupied for even a short while, it's not completely without merit....)

Personal faves (tho' its totally unfair):-
- Respect the link. (rushmc) , for brevity;
- You people may want to remove the butt plugs once a week cuz your eyeballs are turning brown. (quonsar) , for directness;
- I know something offends me, I just need to find it.... (owillis), cos i know exactly what he means;
- Trolling for fellatio. (evanizer), cos it sounds so dirty;
- sniff my ethernet. (rodii), cos i miss him, and its surreal;
- now with full frontal Miguel. (tj), well, just because;
- "With a derail to go?" (Miguel Cardoso), cos 1 miguel reference is never enough;
- You're wrong. No you're wrong. (Shadowkeeper) , cos it actually is a tagline;
- we're trying to have a society here. (rodii), cos its true.

Sorry, couldn't wait for analysis

Hey, now! No pickin' on the chicken!

Does it actually have to have been proposed as a tagline to qualify? I was reminded in the endless entertaining Get Your War On meme-fest of the one line that says it all: We have cameras. NortonDC apparently forget the "MetaFilter: " prefix, but otherwise, it's perfection...
posted by JollyWanker at 9:36 PM on October 3, 2002

yhbc - I came across this problem early on in making the list and had to decide which way to give credit, because often the taglines are extracted from someone's comment text and sometimes are written as a separate sentence. I decided to credit the person who proposed it as a tag, even though that may not always be correct. I could credit both, I guess, but it gets complicated.

Hildago, yes I have a job - works been piling up for a while now, though.

stavrosthewonderchicken, don't blame me - it was you that finally inspired me to make the list, but I can't quite remember how now. Bastard. Utter, Utter, Utter Bastard!

I have probably missed plenty, as I found them by searching for things like "MetaFilter:" and then searching the results, so not an exact science. Happy to add any - just e-mail the link to me.

Have to go and do some work now...

Great work, dg! What fun it is to zoom through someone else's hard work.

I agree with the methodology, btw. Taglines are spotted, not written. There's an art to it. I can't do it. For instance, that "with a derail to go?" wasn't tagged by me. I just wrote it. It was probably in the middle of some long rant, surrounded by padding and deadweight, 'tween jetsam and flotsam.

What happens is you write down a load of cobblers, the usual rubbish, and someone else cherry-picks a few words, isolates them and then generalizes them as referring to MetaFilter as a whole. In the example above, say:

MeFi: 'tween jetsam and flotsam.

A poor example, but a vindication of your approach to this fascinating subject. Thank you very much - you should be immediately awarded a license to act like a total fuckwit for a month or two without snark, sanction or deletion.

Wouldn't it be fun if great contributions got Monopoly-style cards? An "Undelete" card would be the highest honour, allowing a user to repost a thread deleted by Matt. Other cards that might be considered:

1. "Delete a news post of your choice"
2. "Free double-post"
3. "Free use of unacceptable expletive"
4. "Masquerade as another poster"

et caetera. ;)

Wow, I didn't realize how many taglines I came up with (for better or for worse). I had tossed the idea around of doing something like this, but I bet it wouldn't have come out so well...kudos to you, sir!

And I still remember that kafka comment mentioned above. I think that still reigns as my favorite MeFi comment ever.

You people may want to remove the butt plugs once a week cuz your eyeballs are turning brown. (quonsar)
though i did remark about it, and would love to take credit for it, this was actually uttered by mischief.

I wish I could be impressed, but for some reason the page crashes my browser (Mac IE5). It loads what must be about a third of the text, and then acts like it's finished. I can't, however, choose anything from the menu/close the window/quit, etc. Hope me?

Marquis - you are probably the most quoted poster! You really must buy a PC if you want to continue to participate here in a meaningful way.

I hope not, because toddshot's I'm cold and scared! is a classic too. Other favs:

Respect the link.
The restroom wall of the internet.
It's like cockfighting without the cocks!.
Get paid to surf the web. Read Metafilter at work.
Wildly out-of-step with the national Zeitgeist.
The limitations are endless.
Less than fully gruntled.
I know something offends me, I just need to find it....
Pillow fight in the ladies room.
It makes me smarter, and more angry about THINGS.
Self-policing my sugar-coated ass since 1999.
Abandon all work, ye who enter here.
Pacifist = fuckwit.
Enough with the broom already.
I think we're saying the same thing.
It's not random. It's complexity.
Oh. Oh dear.
Taking navel-gazing to a whole new level.
We appear to have been a little hasty about your lynching.

How on earth did I get "You're wrong. No you're wrong" to my credit?

Oops: toddshot's moment of glory.
