Enthusiam is great, but this is just one lame post. April 22, 2003 2:51 PM Subscribe
If you're going to pee all over a thread, considering taking it to MeTa first. Okay, I'll bite. As VulcanMike points out, this really isn't WhiteStripesFilter. Enthusiam is great, but this is just one lame post.
First, I like the White Stripes. Second, because I like the White Stripes, I've known about this for at least a week. Third, The links are dreadfully inadequate, given the previous White Stripes posts on Mefi. Fourth, Are we in the business of promotion now for those bands, movies, items et al that the cool people are supposed to like? Fifth , I agree that pissing on the thread is innapropriate, and Sixth (this will probably get this post deleted) I thought another post to MeTa could use a break by scroll down. I'm sure someone else has had enough fun for one day.

Well I had thought about adding links to various reviews of their new album, but other than that, there really wasn't any need to fatten up the post.
It's just a simple FYI post concerning a unique (four in a row) television appearance.
I'm don't regret making the post, and it seems a few readers are happy that I did, so that's good enough for me.

And then they post similar poo.
Doesn't self policing benefit by public shaming?

Reading the post in an RSS newsreader, without knowing who posted it, made me think that a publicist for either the band or the show had posted this. Which is exactly why the post is wrong, wrong, wrong.
"Don't forget to watch The West Wing tonight!"
"You'll never guess who's guest-starring on tonight's episode of The Simpsons [more inside]"
Imagine a MetaFilter where posts are made solely to drum up shows' ratings.
Besides, the links are just to the home pages of the band and the show. If you're going to post on a TV show or someone's appearance thereon (or an upcoming movie, or a product release, or anything that would clearly benefit from the publicity), at least find an interesting angle. Hint: liking the band is not an interesting angle. Appearing all week is not interesting enough, unless you've got an interesting link to back it up. Which this post doesn't.
Adding reviews wouldn't have made it any better either, because they wouldn't have made the story any more interesting.
Any post where the subject benefits from the publicity more than we benefit from reading about it is questionable on its face.

Personally, I also don't think that The Michael The was "pissing all over the post." I think he did it in a quite normal way, but quoting the 'rules.' He could have been a lot nastier-as a lot of people in this have shown they can be.
BTW Beholder, you should easily realize that xmutex was just joking. Methinks perhaps you are a little touchy because this is about your post.
Personally, I don't care about the White Stripes. But that adds nothing to this discussion...

Feeling compelled to add to this thread, as my name is in the post, I'll point out the following:
Beholder said:
I thought four straight appearances on Conan was interesting news, that not everyone had heard about yet, and that's why I made the post.
If I had not already known about this, I would have certainly wanted someone here to bring it to my attention.
Reading this, it's clear that Beholder did not understand the posting guidelines. As The Michael The quoted, MetaFilter is not for posting random news or facts.
The posting guidelines include the qualifier "most people haven't seen it before" -- but "it" does not refer to the content of the post itself, but rather the page to which the post links.
Regardless of whether this is a WhiteStripesFilter post, the links should have at least provided some interesting content or information.
On top of that, MeFi is being used as a sort of lazyfilter for information that certain segments of the community find useful.
Post about the White Stripes existing, and link to reputable and insightful reviews and articles. Post about their breakthrough video and link to that video. After that, unless they're doing something exceptionally notable for which there's a content-rich destination link, leave it up to the fans to join mailing lists or check White Stripes fan pages.
If we use MetaFilter as an information crutch, we are not only hurting the community, but we're also hurting the Web, as we're not using its non-meta resources properly.

"it's clear that Beholder did not understand the posting guidelines"
Why would anyone bother to understand the guidelines? No one follows them. And what if they did? Most of the posts today can be spun using contrived logic to fit the guidelines. We're actually debating what the meaning of "it" is.
MetaFilter posts are, almost without exception, breaking news, op-ed pieces, product placements, or history channel digests. So what if we add TV listings? MetaFilter is the new CNN. No matter how unalterably stupid a post is, some dipspork will chime in with, "Well I hadn't seen it before and I want to thank you for the post."
The "haven't seen before" thing is naive. Most of the people here have seen most of the stuff that gets posted.
Guidelines shmidelines. We have the same amount of focus here as you'd find in a Sunday news paper. Beating people up over it used to make sense. I don't see what the point is now.
And Beholder, I think xmutex clearly means to murder you and you should be very afraid, This is indeed very illegal and very serious. I suggest you call the FBI and explain to them that xmutex is after you.
