Callout for a Golden Day

October 14, 2003: A golden day for Metafilter? Interesting threads. Very little in the way of "you're wrong, no you're wrong," revealing anecdotes, thoughtful comments. Can we keep this up for a week? Pat yourselves on the back, MeFites. I haven't seen a day this good here in a while.

As much as opinion differs as to what [is good], this sort of Meta post always strikes me as even less useful than the [this is bad] type. At least the latter choose a particular topic for their subject. "Today's stuff was all good" is just too vague, particularly when some of us may well disagree. Besides, it reeks of hearty (and empty) backslapping, to me.

Perhaps what is needed is an automatically generated Meta post for every Mefi post, where those who care can debate the post's merits, foibles, question its author, its politics, and poke fun at its presentation.

The thread would have reached 100+ comments, beginning with basic Miguel Bashing, then Miguel comes in and magically reduces it to inane chatter, a frequency of 4 to 1 injokes to bashing is introduced afterwards, with light sprinkling of konolia being the only person who actively defends Miguel and chastises the community for being so mean despite it was Miguel's original intention of making a MeTa post to exceed 100+ comments.

Well, I'm sorry, sometimes MetaFilter actually works. There may be those who have walked away - but many of those who stay, continue to make intelligent and worthwhile posts. And I'm sure a lot of us who derive an enormous pleasure from reading them would secretly like to be able to pat the authors on the back (or perhaps kiss them on the cheek). I suggest we take a moment to congratulate all those who have posted or commented today, for their restraint, enthusiasm, and downright joie de vivre. Are there any steps we can take to continue this delightful string of successful posting? [Yes, I have myself contributed, in some small way to this success, but I owe it all to those brilliant and inimitable MeFites who showed me the way.]

My point, Mr Chin, is that other folks get a free pass for the very same posts that Miguel gets shredded for. I fully intend to use my acronym from now on when I see this happen.
I'm personally indifferent to whether or not we have these kinds of posts -but I have a totally overdeveloped sense of justice and fair play. What's fair for Miguel should be fair for all, and vice versa. And that is all.
