What domain names do I keep, part 1 of N February 9, 2004 5:24 PM   Subscribe

Umm... is this appropriate for AskMefi? I might not have bristled as much if not for the implication that we will be seeing "more than a dozen" of the same threads in the "next several days," and this was merely "part one" of many. Wendell, I love you man, but, uh, [this is bad].

I assume it's an attempt to generate responses for his sociology thesis.

Agreed, [this is bad.] Wendell, you could have simply said "I have some domain names I'm wondering how to use; anyone interested in helping me figure it out, please drop me a line." This is way too lengthy and detailed and multipart for AskMeFi.

Didn't you know? I'm somebody else's sociology thesis...

As for future episodes in my multi-part AskMeFi...

Part 2: Other database sites: CLICHESTADIUM.COM and MURPHYSLAWLIBRARY.COM

Part 3: Showbiz News site: NORTHHOLLYWOODREPORTER.COM and Animation History site: THEPORTABLEHOLE.COM

Part 4: Blog related sites: BLOGHEADS.COM and LINKINLOG.COM

Part 5: News Satire site: NEWSLEEK.COM

Part 6: Webcomic: CLOWNSAROUND.COM

Names I don't know what to do with but I think they're cool: AARDBALL.COM and STATICKLINGON.COM
Names I've already lost interest in: THEPRESIDENTSANALYST.COM, OFFTHEWALLSTREETJOURNAL.COM, MUTTCUISINE.COM, INSTAPUNSTER.COM and MYBIGFATGEEKWEBLOG.COM
(mentioning them here does away with a need for Part 7)

One of my numerous personality flaws (and one of my favorite) is my tendency to over-explain everything. Which is why I was so hesitant to start using AskMeFi in the first place. Now that I've started... I CAN'T STOP!!!

Allowing one question per week would solve this problem real quick.

That does it. I'm moving all my eBay auctions to AskMe.

I've got a VG+ Tim Buckley Hello Goodbye with slight wear on the cover going up myself.

Sounds painful. Which part of you is it "going up"?

There is a simple answer to all of your questions in this category, wendell:
If you build it, they will come.

Why are Wendell's questions a problem?

Because he's abusing AxMe, that's why.

The vast vast majority of AxMe's have been questions with specific answers. Wendelll's question is more akin to asking where I left my car keys. The answer is always going to be "it depends".

Besides. None of the domains he's listed off have particularly special names.

He's messing with the AskMF signal/noise ratio, but I must confess a certain fascination with learning about wendell himself. As to whether or not AskMF is the best place for my experience, I suppose not. It's been a heck of a ride, though.

Have you found a place to live yet? I hope so.

I don't understand why these all have to be separate questions. Wendell, can't this all be done with one thread?

There are some classics in there, especially LINKINLOG.COM, MUTTCUISINE.COM and the big fat geek one.

Has anyone considered that wendell might have added comments about these domain names in the same Ask MetaFilter thread, which is open for thirty days?

I didn't infer (and wendell did not say) that he intended to start multiple threads on the same topic. Did he?

Yeah, actually, I'm down on the actual AxMe post, but I'm curious about Wendell as well. How's the housing search going?

And hama has a good point. Wendell should've aggregated his domain questions into one post.

I think so many in so few days is a bit much, but otherwise, his questions are no worse than many, many others I have read in AskMe.

Wendell says "[i]f I explained them all in this one Ask thread, I'd still be writing it, and nobody'd bother to read it all..."

Maybe the problem with my question is that it's more akin to asking "does this dress make me look fat?"

Should I be a baseball umpire?
[next day]
Should I be a ballerina?
[next day]
How about a longshoreman?

Alright, how'd you get a hold of my resume?

Is that something you have to know php to decipher?

There are some classics in there, especially LINKINLOG.COM, MUTTCUISINE.COM and the big fat geek one.
Take one, it's yours, hammy. (e-mail me)

So, is it time for me to register WENDELLFUCKWIT.COM?
(notice I resisted the temptation to do an AskMe FPP with that question)

Depends on the neighborhood, I guess.
