More and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that July 21, 2004 12:30 PM   Subscribe

The pancakes are getting incredibly stale, people.
Metafilter used to be an addiction for me, but lately with more and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that, can we really say we are the best of the Web anymore? Final straw was the posting of that Bush daughter photo.
Is this really what we want this place to be?

"Yes", says lots of frequent MeFi contributers. Haven't you been paying attention? There is a genuine division of opinion about what MeFi is and is supposed to be. And then the largest group, perhaps, thinks the in-betweeness of what it is as a practical matter is Just Dandy.

We argue about this every week. Only Matt has the power to substantially change anything if he were to decide to do so. Otherwise MeFi is going to continue to drift in whatever direction it's been drifting for some time now. I care about that direction as much as anyone, and I'll in my own little ways still try to influence it. But as a means for deciding this, or reaching a consensus, or really solving the problem in any sense, MeTa has demonstrated its futility.

Unless you have a new approach? Something we haven't tried before? I don't mean a new solution to what you perceive as the problem, but a new approach to discussing the problem, or even getting enough people to agree there is a problem. Unless you've got something novel to offer, there's not much point in having this discussion again this week.

postroad's post should be deleted. Why do we need 100+ comments of fighting in order to agree that it's a lame post?

I don't see this cycle of whining and complaining leading to no action ending anytime soon. If Matt continues to do nothing, this is just going to endlessly repeat.

Sometimes, I wish we were ruled by an iron fist. Hands-off management has its downsides.

None of us has the power to do anything to curtail another's perceived negative posting behavior except to hurl words in a (futile) attempt to convince the perpetrator of their wrongdoing. Only Matt has the power to set and enforce policy, and he's clearly not stepping up to the plate.

Same shit, different meta thread. Next!

Actually, one of the things that keeps me coming back is the assumption that crap weeks may come and go, but by and large we do police ourselves. This has been a cruddy week for newsfilter and MeTa callouts for various fuck-yous, but enough people are trying to make it better that eventually we'll shun and shame the knuckleheads and spitemongers back a couple of steps, and someone will post something really, really beautiful and uplifting, or really thought-provokingly idiotic, or whatever, and the pendulum will swing back the other way.

I believe. That Bush-girl post will go, because it needs a wheelchair, it's so lame. And something slightly less lame (or lamer than that; I'm not psychic) will fill the hole, and we'll do another glorious lap. Sic transit gloria friggin' mundi.

But I got ten bucks says Postroad reads these callouts with his pinkie at the corner of his mouth, and gets a good chuckle out of them.

Maybe this post is stale and useless as well-but I have been almost the ultimate Metafilter apologist for a very long time now, both as a member and as an exile. The last several weeks I have realized that I don't come here as often or spend as much time, and when I am here it is nowhere near as interesting. And ChasFile, you are right-it has the real potential of getting much worse before it gets better.
In my previous incarnation as the crazed Bunnyfire, Matt did take a much firmer hand with the site. Many of us whined and moaned about THAT. Well, I take it all back. Somebody buy #1 a new set of clippers and set him loose!

This isn't true. Election time has always been a train wreck around here. Go back and see the front page taken over by Nader/Bush/Gore crap in 2000. And I see Matt deleting as much or more than he did back when you started.

"when I am here it is nowhere near as interesting"

The only time you're interesting is when you trot out some ludicrous reason why gay marriage will ruin society. Which is pure MeFi gold for sure.

Personally, I think the only thing to do is suspend Postroad's account. While I realize that Postroad does contribute some thought-provoking stuff and is clearly no idiot, his consistent, unabashed newsfiltering - combined with his longstanding refusal to respond to any criticism in the grey - constitutes a unilateral hijack of MetaFilter. I'm not saying kill him. I'm not saying burn his house down. But I think he needs a 1-month spell in the cooler. Other people I'd accuse of newsfiltering, notably y2karl, at least invest research and craft into their posts, which goes a long way toward defending their existence. But Postroad behaves like a Yahoo News spambot that's acquired a MeFi account password and randomly posts news items with keyword "Bush" on a 48-hour interval.

Some people may do a better job of putting a newsfilter post into context and adding interesting related links, but Postroad's newsfiltering isn't that bad, as long as you are tolerant to some degree of newsfilter. Nevertheless, I wish he would venture out of newsfilter once in awhile.

His post today: worthless. It will be gone, hopefully soon.

Despite the recent spate of newsfilter posts there have been a lot of really interesting front page posts recently. We probably see more best of web posts per day now than in 2000.

10 Things I've ascertained about Fred Lapides:

1) He likes the titties

2) He's older than all of us and presumably possesses more experience

3) He don't give two nickel-plated shits about this newfangled MetaTalk concept

4) His keyboard appears to be broke or something

5) He's likened Marriage to living in a kennel among snarling, incontinent German Shepherds. Wait, maybe that was SpaceCadet. Or maybe I just made it up?

6) You know how they say, "Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee™?" Well, Fred hates her. Cannot hold a civil concersation without bitterly invoking her name.

7) His contributions to the site have been mostly of a world-affairs bent, yet due to his unique writing style I've been unable to get a handle on his political stance

8) He hasn't yet made good on his vow to help O.J. find the "real killers"

9) He was dodging North Korean bullets back when your sorry asses were setting up your first Geocities page

10) He's quick with a joke, even if it's not always clear to you (or him) what the joke is

I say we keep him.

You cannot give me too much work; to accumulate work has almost become a passion with me: my study is so full of it now, that there is hardly an inch of room for any more. I shall have to throw out a wing soon.

And I am careful of my work, too. Why, some of the work that I have by me now has been in my possession for years and years, and there isn't a finger-mark on it. I take a great pride in my work; I take it down now and then and dust it. No man keeps his work in a better state of

I'd like Matt to just do this: automatically delete any posts that are nothing but one or a few words and a link to a national news story at a national media site...excepting really major events, which Matt has repeatedly stated are worthy to post because of the desire to discuss them. That seems like something the majority of us could agree upon as a standard.

And people that continually post stuff that Matt deletes should get a timeout or permanent ban. But that's really what he is already doing, anyway. Matt does notice and punish people he's had to repeatedly clean up after.

Does anyone else wonder if the reason this issue remains perpetually unresolved is that Matt's deletion policy on it is totally inconsistent?

and anyway Matt didn't ban him back when Posty was posting a shitty Middle East fpp a day, so I don't think he'll ban him now. I don't care much for Posty's fpps because it's stuff i've already seen elsewhere, his contribution is usually smattering of bad spelling and crazy syntax. and he posts too much on the front page. and he certainly knows how to troll, when he feels like it -- just check out how many of his posts were deleted by Matt in the past.

and excuse me karl, but I don't buy the "he's old, let's respect that" thing. if his posts suck ass, they suck ass. I don't care whether he's in fifth grade or he's 112 years old. and I humbly submit that assholes don't get less assholish as they get older. just the opposite, actually.

If you think something's worth having around, argue its merits, don't just tell me I should take on the burden of filtering out the noise as I read.

Besides, until something changes, what do you think I'm doing? I'm dealing with it. Do I need to bury the subject in the Grey, too? If you don't want to have a discussion about newsfiltering, can't you, y'know, just ignore it?

Oh, don't ban postroad, he's become part of the general environment. MeFi is'nt run by a set of hard and fast rules, it's run on feel. Some people get away with things others could never get away with(like quonsar,) but we keep them around because they lend a certain amount of personality to the site. To ban postroad would be to overly sanitize things and make MeFi into a uninteresting middle of the road community weblog that would, in the end, be kind of boring. While on one hand having people like postroad around may seem disruptive, it really provides a focus that other users can use to understand their own approach to the site and its content. While this may be unfair (postroad posts newsfilter - why can't I) it's a reflection on life and if the internet is going to mean anything it should not limit experience, but show the diversity of experience that makes life interesting. The other day I commented that people need to cut out the soap-opera, but perhaps the soap-opera is natural. Without hard and fast rules there are many things that happen here that don't make sense, but they should be allowed to not make sense - that's life I guess.

So, I'm not saying get over it, it's just a website, but MeFi is interesting because it is a reflection on life and different people's approach to politics, philosophy and communication.

For full discloser I've basically drank a bottle of pic st loup to my head and y'all are free to disregard this post if its overly nonsensical.

Well, as long as we're all clear on the fact that we have no princples, but decide policy based on popularity contest: OK. This takes me all the way back to junior high.

To ban postroad would be to overly sanitize things

It's nothing personal, but whether you disagree with the rabid newsfiltering, or the uselessness of I/P posts, the divisiveness of Bush-is-bad posts, or just hate the infighting and arguing that's taken over Mefi, everybody's got a reason to complain to Postroad. Why people are reluctant to bring those oft-lamented conditions home to roost on his doorstep is beyond me. I guess people are reluctant to challenge anyone who seems to be an entrenched community figure.

Instead of getting caught up in a popularity contest based on personality, it would be nice if we could address Postroad's style here, with a conversation. But he makes this impossible, and that's pretty dysfunctional. I'll talk about more or less anything, but combine someone who just won't talk with a moderator who's super-reluctant to ban, and you get the slow downward spiral into Yahoo News that we're experiencing here.

the republican party used to be an addiction for me, but lately with more and more lies, and boring lies at that, can we really say we are the best of the Western world anymore? Final straw was the posting of that Bush daughter photo.

That Postroad is old, the more the pity, his white hairs do witness it; but that he is, a whoremaster, saving your reverences, that I utterly deny. If sack and sugar be a fault, God help the wicked! If to be old and merry be a sin, then many an old host that I know is damned: if to be fat is to be hated, then meth junkies are to be loved.

No, my good Mefites; banish Paris Paramus, banish David Dark, banish hama7: but for sweet Postroad, kind Postroad, true Postroad, valiant Postroad, and therefore more valiant, being, as he is, old Postroad, banish not him thy Metafilter's company, banish not him the blue's company: banish plump Postroad, and banish all the world!

don't just tell me I should take on the burden of filtering out the noise as I read.

But that is precisely what you should do, yanno. Mathowie has long since expressed his unwillingness to do it for you on a regular and consistent basis, and therefore your only alternative is to leave it undone and whine constantly that it isn't getting done, which is quite unbecoming.

Trying to reach and uphold some community standards is one thing; constantly harping on things which will never change and which are beyond the ability of anyone listening to you to change is simply futile. And obnoxious.

"Why do people have a problem with diversity?"

A link to a picture of Bush's daughter sticking her tongue out, with no story to go with it, is hardly what we think of as diversity. A 100 comment call-out on such a post, where we have an informal vote on whether the user should be banned, is just our gentle way of saying, "Please do better good sir."

We aren't very good at saying, "Please do better." And other than the 20 or so people who keep this place honest with good links, we aren't very good at doing better either. More than anything else, MetaTalk is just a pressure valve that keeps us from going after coworkers with an ax, ramming into drivers who talk on cell phones, or sending death threats to public officials.

Thank you MetaTalk for keeping us out of jail. Without you we'd go crazy.

Seth, given that october was riffing on Shakespeare, I'm not sure you can assume that everything he/she wrote was earnest. Specifically, urging that the aforementioned trio be banned.

Anyway, mischief et al, diversity is good. That's why I think there should be more inline images of heterosexual cumshots on the blue. And farkesque photoshops. Weather forecasts. Funny cat photos. Links to war3z ftp archives. Also, random bible verse, babelfish translations of old screenplays, much more central Arkansas local political news, a word of the day, sports trivia, and your mama's fat ass. Because diversity is good. Why oh why do people hate diversity so? Poor, poor diversity. Trodden upon by the jackbooted feet of the relentlessly rigid, diversity needs a hug. Come here, diversity. We ♥ you, diversity. We ♥ you so, so very much, diversity.

If I had written that parody, those would have been the people I would have chosen, although probably just to be consipicuously non-partisan I would have hunted for a leftwing person I thought belonged in that list. BTW: judging by a handful of comments, some of you think I was implying that postroad should be coddled because of his age. It's hard to believe that this needs to be explained, but that entire top-ten list was a JOKE.
posted by dhoyt at 11:00 AM on July 22, 2004

You adequately create the echo-chamber on your own when you squawk like a parrot every time you open your mouth, letting loose the same verbal barrage as the time before and the time before that. If you can't see the irony of grinding the axe of your own agenda every chance you get, I don't know what to say. Not to mention your over-wrought use of the word agenda, which has taken on the epic proportions of a talking points memo in regards to metafilter.

I know it's not "daily", but it's 90% of the time you say anything, anywhere, and probably 100% of the time you say anything in metatalk. If it was daily I'd probably hang myself with marine rope.

Your suggestion that it doesn't occur on the blue is spurious at best. There have been recent examples of you hijacking threads in the blue to fight your little war with various members of posting histories.

I don't think my attempt was all that pathetic, really. Every time you open your mouth the irony runs down your face like corn syrup. As for your dispute, it's been critiqued a hundred times in a hundred different threads--that's what makes is so intolerably boring and what makes your constant hijacking of threads in order to discuss so downright awful. Maybe next time? ;)

Skip it. Skip the friddly fucxking skip it. Skip skip skippity fucking skip it.

I like Postroad's offerings. The man has an eye for the female form, and he tends to find things both fun and significant. That he posts them here speaks to his clueless bravery. Sorry, I can't find much fault with that. Newsfilter? So what? He posted a link showing an overprivelaged brat being ... a brat. If it didn't conflict with the poster of this thread's ideology, this wouldn't probably have made it here.

Of course, I'd never support a candidate that called one of his secret security men a son-of-a-bitch, or any candidate that told a US senator to go fuck himself. So how much can I really know?

This thread is just one more in a long line of BS Bush supporting attempts to make the rest of us anti-'Murcan assholes feel ashamed that the white house has become a joke. The post in question wasn't the best of the web ... very little posted to the blue is anymore. But make no mistake, this MeTa callout is just one more crappy "don't have fun at the expense of the authorities" crap fest. Postroad profers the good and the bad of newsfilter stuffage. Deal. God forbid we ought have a laugh at those who really do seem to think themselves above us.

take yerself a nice break from the shitfest you so obviously feel you're above.

Above this? Comment your evidence, cupcake. What the hell did I write that brought that on? As I indicated, I actually enjoy your so-called "shit fest", and feel it thoroughly appropriate here. What I find myself "above" is the bullshit whining from those with an agenda ... who won't support said agenda ... but would rather attempt to make those who don't agree feel bad for disagreeing with the agenda ... as if they could.

You don't want me to think that you support Bush? (I really never ever did ...) Then don't support the suppositions of those who proclaim a moral rightiousness when, quite in fact, all they are doing is attempting to silence those who don't agree with their pro-Bush caterwahling. You don't like the newsfilter ... I get it. But don't support konolia's partisan whining when the post isn't newsfilter, but rather humorfilter. That was what Posty put on the blue. If you think it polifilter/newsfilter then it says much more about you than it does about me.

And don't say I didn't add anything, when by your very response, you prove that I did. That's just lame ...

This one struck you as over the top, and I question (with all assumptions pointing "right") as to why. Postroad's contribution was actually funny ... in a cynical kinda way. Why post this to MeTa as a sure sign of the death of MetaFilter unless this struck you as wrong in a deeply offensive manner?

It was humor. That's all it was. Best of the web? Probably not. Different from the bajilions of meaningless and trite artsy photog links from hamatroll? Nope. Different from the quathousandly links of flashy snoorness from crunchland? Uhhh ... Uhn-uhn. It was nothing, except the rich being the pompous and arrogant and upity rich. this wasn't a newsfilter callout half as much as it was a whine that someone posted a humor piece concerning the preznit's spawn.

Well, this thread may have listed overwhelmingly toward discussion of the Jenna Bush photo (which I confess I did enjoy seeing) but the way the MeTa callout was phrased, the Jenna thing was just the "final straw," in a broad phenomenon, not the whole enchilada. So I guess I disagreed with the way you seemed to characterize the entirety of this conversation based on the validity of the Jenna Bush photo.

For myself, I'm in it for the "boring Newsfilter" angle moreso than bad-Jenna-post angle.

Seriously, though, if you want to say stuff that's already been said 20 times in the thread before you showed up, then okay, but if those things you want to repeat concentrate on the tiresomeness of the MeTa thread itself, then you're just perpetuating something you claim to deplore, and are left floundering on the rocks of auto-contradiction.

In all likelihood, we should both just shut up. I know you're an Angel. And if I ever had a point, it's long since been drowned in unrelenting seas.

Yeah, he did. He included some Falstaff stuff from Henry IV as a flashback in Henry V. Still kicks Olivier's ass though.

I didn't post this to pick on Postroad, or to whine because it was a Bush kid in the pic-who cares?-I posted this because because I do care about this site. Like a lot of you I have spent a considerable amount of time here over several years. As an aside, the personal attacks don't even bother me anymore (maybe it's the donuts? Thanks, t r a c y) but come on-what do they have to do with the point that quality front page posts do matter? Whether you love me, hate me, or yawn in my face-it is not germaine to the point at hand.

Reposted to the correct thread:

Konolia will always bear the bunnyfire stigma, and it is right that she should do so. Actions and choices have consequences, and we all carry our past with us. But she is also the persona that she has revealed under the konolia nick. It is up to each reader to decide for himself whether the latter provides sufficient reason to forgive the former.

None of which really has much bearing on the validity of her complaint here, which in a nutshell seems to be that Metafilter now bores here and doesn't live up to her standards of what she feels it should be. Others have made the same complaint; yet many others feel quite differently. What bothers me is the implication that her truth must be everyone's truth, that her experience must be everyone's experience, that her reality must be everyones reality, with seemingly no awareness that others might hold equally valid opinions. If one wishes a different Metafilter, certainly one can (and arguably should) try to work to bring it into being, but to simply demand that others present it to you as your due, sweeping all other perspectives aside as irrelevant, strikes me as exceedingly arrogant, and it annoys me.

I applaud your desire for a better Metafilter, konolia, but I question your methods.

Granted, I wish during that time period I had not been posting, but I am not ashamed of it either. I was ill, on wrong meds, plus a dear friend was dying. I don't need or want anyone's forgiveness for that time period. That was who I was then; "konolia" is simply how you address the person I am now.

But why any of that should have any bearing on the fact that basic and blatant newsfilter is BAD is beyond me. I am simply trying to rally the troops to go forth and post GOOD stuff and maybe stay away from Yahoo and Drudge for source material. If you must bash Bush, no problem-just find some good source material. I don't CARE.

Well, you're not the first person to believe that critics ought to be rounded up and fed to the crocodiles. I don't necessarily disagree with you entirely. The input of the critic is worth 1% of the input of the "artiste." But criticism still has a corrective role here, where bad posts do happen routinely, and are deleted routinely. You seems to want to cast all criticism as nose-upturned snobbery flung from the deep comfort of a reclining armchair. But what about feedback? Genuine criticism? Is it so galling to open a conversation about the character of the site's content? To question where we set the bar?

If you disagree with someone's policy proposal, then argue your own view of policy. Don't attack them for bringing up the subject at all. That isn't an act of unmitigated gall, it is, in fact what the Grey is for.

What bothers me is the way people indignantly freak out when someone expresses their opinion. Konolia has presented us her opinion. The site is getting boring.

Rather than disagree with the assertion itself, you're just crucifying her for having the gall to say what she thinks. You suggest that if she's willing to say what she thinks, she must be demanding all of us to fall into lockstep with her. WTF? Can't you just disagree with her and leave off with the indignant outrage? You're straightjacketing her and simultaneously accusing her of not respecting other people's opinions. Boo!

Funny you should ask. Probably a full 75% of what I write includes quite-intentional qualifiers like "it seems", "I think", and others. I use such qualifiers both for precision—I'm not sure about what is true, but I'm quite certain of my own experience—and to avoid what I'll call here (off the top of my head) "intellectual imperialism".

I've noticed that it doesn't [seem to] make a damn bit of difference. I might as well just plain assert God's Honest Truth™ like [almost] everyone else.

I don't see how you derive that conclusion from my noting a clear difference between "genuine criticism" and repeatedly stating that one finds the place boring. Not to blow you off, but at this point any attempts to clarify my point further are going to seem like piling-on konolia, and since that is not my intent, and since I feel that I've stated my case pretty clearly, I shall leave it at that.

I still dispute the idea that, aside from the occasional really really dumb post, like the pic of that foul little jenna bush, that newsfilter is "outnumbering" the good posts. I usually find the normal posts outnumber the news posts by about 3:1 or 4:1. So hysteria is overblown, and people reject what may have been a legitimate complaint about one particular bad news post.

To konolia, I would say, be the change you wish to see in the world, you know? If you want more interesting content on the front page, post it. People respond to leadership by example much more than to preaching (I've learned this personally), and realistically it's the only thing you can do to change the content. "This site can do much better than that" is a meaningless statement-- the site is its members, and you are one, so if you think it can do better, do better.

It was supposed to be a sampling of the best of the web and it is. The best of the web often reflects the best of humanity. But you can't ignore the other 95% of the web. People aren't perfect by necessity. And anyone would tire of a stream of unbelievably great posts.

It's in the contrast between the best and the rest that the great links truly shine. People need the rough for there to be diamonds. I would argue that a background of sub par links actually enhances the rare jewels. We can argue over what the ratio of mediocre to astonishing should be but all the while realize that the discussion is part of the process.

Just as you need links to praise you need posts to slam, newsfilter or otherwise. The commentary is part of the context and not completely separable from their target. To complain about the style of posts is to perpetuate them.

If a post sucks you've got three choices. Drop a turd in it. Make it better by contributing to the thread in positive way, or complain in MetaTalk. The choice you make says a lot about you.

As an gay atheist liberal, I detest much of the sanctimonious, bigotted, supernatural nonsense that konolia posts - usually, in a reactionary fashion to the pro-freedom, pro-Human Rights Campaign links posted to Mefi. But to consciously refuse to forgive and forget a pattern of behaviour stemming from a period of illness from years ago is callous and petty.

Such attitudes *from* konolia would be called as likely the result of her religion. What is it due to in a humanist?

Buy a box of krispy kreme donuts.
Chop them into smallish pieces and run them through your juicer.
Take the juice and freeze it for several hours.
Chop the frozen juice up into smallish pieces and put them in your blender, set to puree.
Pour the pureed donut juice into a tall glass, and top with some caramel drizzled whipped cream, and several heaping tablespoons of white sugar.
Enjoy!

I guess I don't know why that's important. Whatever happened seems to have been during one of my many breaks in reading this place. It seems sad that people wish to perpetuate past actions in that it might magnify any fault that gets posted. I have done it to a few people here and am starting to realize that it might be counterproductive.

That said, complaining about what gets posted and not deleted seems like a waste of energy compared to hunting out good links to fight any sort of X-filter you dislike. I don't really have a problem skipping posts or care what impression is left as a result of certain posts. Therefore, it's not likely that I'll ever do a metatalk callout, but it doesn't mean that I will not express an opinion on the quality of any post.

There's desire to keep a person's past posts and known beliefs as a hammer towards any new post. That konolia is bored through lack of effort to focus on good threads or seeking out good links to add is a fault, but it's not related to her overall mental state. Yeah. I do agree. For better or for worse, we are what we post. A couple years ago, when I first joined this place, I came off as cranky, arrogant, and over-bearing. In reality, I am all these things, which is why the assessment seems to have stuck for all these years. However, my friends know me for more positive qualities as well, and once balanced out, the relationships I have are mutually respectful.

Unfortunately, the benefit of the doubt is rarely given to most posters here; I too have used people's past comments against them, if only to point out inconsistencies. As I said, for better or for worse, because of the medium, our comments can only be judged with reference to our past comments. Especially in MetaTalk, where the comments are less factual and more abstract. In Ask MeFi and usually MeFi, comments can generally be proven true or false through links and hard evidence; but when it's just a chatty conversation, it's difficult to differentiate between "good" and "not-so-good".

That said, I'd like to see her opinion on the state of the Filter since the gratuitous Bushdaughter picture (which, for lack of any other redeeming values, is an instant icon of the poisonous state of politics today). I've seen a lot of the "best of the web" the last 3 days, and the obvious PoliticsFilter, NewsFilter, IraqFilter or I/PFilter posts I can count on one hand. Well, the LAST thing I expected to see when I logged on was my own tombstone, Wendell....

As to your question, yes, I think there has been improvement. As to outing, I seriously doubt there was really anyone on this site that DIDN'T know what my old nick was.

If I caused you any grief over this konolia (I still can't think of you as anyone other than Bunnyfire) I apologize. I just figured everybody knew, now that it is in your member profile. I have always loved your contributions (with the exception of the anti-newsfilter rants) either as Bunnyfire (a very cool user name) or Konolia (I can not quite figure out this obscure one). Anyway, I think I need to go to parentheses time out now.

It still felt to me like some of the posters to this thread were going "Look everybody! She's BUNNYFIRE!", whether or not anybody cared.

Hey, Tombstone Generator's on the Blue, the Bunnyfire account was killed, my brain makes those kind of connections. Thankfully, hotlinking to my own site, I can change the image any time I want. (Bwahahahahaha)

Congratulations. Some of the more interesting thoughts I've heard recently about newsfucking.

Don't feel bad-all it is is my deceased grandmother's name. I had to think of something that I could sneak past Matt at the time. He did figure it out within the month but for some bizarre reason he let me stay. If he ever comes to this neck of the woods he DEFINITELY gets donuts.

Wow. Really? And there was I thinking he'd forgiven you, a la Padre Matt. Instead, you actually ... snuck back in???

Hrmph.

I'm pretty sure sign-ups were closed at the time you joined as konolia, so by sneaking past in, do you mean that you sent him an e-mail asking him to join without revealing who you really were?

I only began to suspect konolia was Bunnyfire a few days ago, but then, I took a lengthy break from visiting the Filter. I was getting annoyed with the website, and that's all it is, after all, albeit a somewhat unique site. Remarkable how little things have changed, except that some past posters have disappeared* and newer ones appeared, during my absence.

Bitching is unlikely to effect change, but neither is metabitching, lest that be construed as my motive for posting this comment. I'm just saying, I find it easier to skip over the posts, or entire sites, than to try to herd cats.

*did somebody say rodii's back? cool, I'll never forget Rodii Appreciation Day. And I'm glad to hear that the statute of limitations on member conduct from 2002 has expired.

Member signups were open when I got back in. Those were the days when he was taking, hmm, was it ten signups a day?

Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd make posts forever and a day. We'd link the sites we choose. We'd debate and never lose. Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days.

Let's see. This MeTa thread weighs in at 152 819b. Subtracting 7 499b of style and header data, we get 145 320b of content. A conservative estimate places the percentage of the thread discussing Bunnyfire at fifty percent. That's 72 660b. Multiplied by 10 000 readers (a favourite estimate), that's 726 600 000b of Bunnyfire-related data transferred, a whopping three-quarters of a gigabyte.

What d'ya know—deleting old accounts really would save bandwidth!

I actually guessed it was bunnyfire in dutch (Which the babelfish now tells me is "konijntjes brand") or a new word meaning "voice of the rabbit" which I guess would actually be "konolalia" or some such thing.
