Any other similar sites? August 31, 2004 3:02 PM Subscribe
Metafilter is one of those sites I visit when I've got 2 seconds to rub together, and the rubbing won't intrude too much on my train of thought. I read the posts, and I can dive in when something seems too entertaining to pass up. Other sites that hit me the same way: Boing Boing, Fark, and /.. However, on a particularly loathsome day of work related idiocies, I find that I can exhaust those sites pretty quickly (particularly since I let my TotalFark subscription lapse). Does anyone have other locations that are equal parts whimsy and serious thought?
Dude!
Ah, see, now you've completely destroyed my attempt at weaseling in the word "whimsy" into something meaningful.
Damn you, onlyconnect.

Keswick: was that AskMe post of yours the one that really got people all riled up? It looks like it; but then, it doesn't seem as provocative as the one I remember. Was there another? Or a MeTa post saying something like "I hate you all. Anyone have any suggestions for where I should go instead?"
Heh.

No that was it. I think I posted a meta post around the same time bitching about some crap or something. I really can't be bothered to check. I think it was the combination of the two that riled people. That or our monthly cycles are all in sync.

I heartily second j-walk. He has numerous links of varied interests on an almost-daily basis, updates early for a west-coaster (which suits this EST time zone person just fine), plus the man has written my all-time favorite excel add-in: Yahtzee!!

I second the recommendation for the SA forums.
I'll advise you, though:
LURK a long time before you post, to get the "feel" of the place.
I've been on SA for going on two years now, and its been well worth the $50 or so I've spent, total (two accounts, avatars, no-banner-ads fee, etc, etc). Sure, there's dead days, but then there's occasionally a thread that makes me laugh my ass off and its all worth it.

The Straight Dope
The message boards cost $ to post, but they're always worth a read.

I second the StraightDope recommend. I joined more than two years ago and vascillated mightily when it went pay to post, waiting until the very very last day. Now I can't begin to imagine what I was thinking when I wasn't going to ante up.
