http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/36862 is nothing but pure hate speech. And uninteresting boring hate speech at that.

no, XHUDISAHDIUAS, hate speech affects us all. you think that hating the people that hate you makes everything ok somehow? did your mummy not tell you that too wrongs don't make a right? or are double standards and hypocrisy somehow ok when they're from annoyed gay democrats?

Actually to many here it's not hate speech, it's like a mantra they repeat to reassure themselves: "Disenfranchised ruralites are the cause of all the worlds problems. They oppress wealthy educated coast dwellers. I realize this makes no sense, but if I say it often enough it will be come true."

Maybe Hazelden could write a book of them.

Not that I let those in flyover country off the hook, but please. Even a slightly more sophisticated analysis would reveal the situation to be more complex.

As a wiser man than me put it...

Did I miss Netcraft's confirmation of the death of wit, humor, irony, sarcasm and satire? (Not that both articles have all elements, but I found it hard to take either one of the articles seriously.)

Hate speech: ...speech that expresses animosity on the basis of race, national origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

It was offensive, but much less so than that racially-coded "comfort women" garbage, and much less of a threat to do violence than that one too.

Now I know the South isn't a "COUNTRY" in the strictest sense, but it is a collection of States. I think railing against the region at large qualifies as animosity on the basis of national origin. Especially when you're arguing that it should be a separate country.

Now I know the South isn't a "COUNTRY" in the strictest sense, but it is a collection of States. I think railing against the region at large qualifies as animosity on the basis of national origin. Especially when you're arguing that it should be a separate country.

It's animosity against a person or people because of those things, not against a region. For example, I have a very healthy dislike (I'm not not going to say hate) of Israel because of its egregious human rights violations. I don't hate people who live in Israel out of hand, however. That said, if I had the opportunity to read an op-ed by someone who lives in Israel and blindly support their policy, there is a good chance I would strongly dislike the person. I do not, however, assume this about all people of Israel.

Then the question would be whether this link professed hatred for the south as a collective of states with a bankrupt ideology, or whether this link professed a hatred for all people who live in the south. Frankly, I have no idea because I started to read the link when quonsar posted it as a comment a few days ago, and I thought it was poorly written, boring, and not funny. It was a trashy attempt at being clever, like a poor version of some of the (already not that good) stuff that's been posted from craigslist before.

In the end, it deserved being deleted because it's stupid, and that's good enough for me.

That isn't hate speech. Calling for a Final Solution to the Southern Problem would be hate speech. I admit to hating pretty much everything about the South (I did anyway, long before this election), but killing them all isn't the way to fix the problem. Better education, maybe?

Speaking of simplistic & presumptuous commentary on the South, here's a gem:

However, the most remarkable and disturbing episode occurred halfway through the [Joan Baez] concert when Joan stopped singing and announced that she had "multiple personalities." One of her multiple personalities is that of a fifteen year old poor black girl named Alice from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas.

I was lucky (!) enough to attend the concert in question with an old UVa professor who blanched when Joan went into the "Alice" routine. Charlottesville is quite a liberal town, but some of the facial expressions from even her most enthusiastic fans were priceless upon hearing the blackspeak. (Thought about posting this to the frontpage for a microsecond, then didn't for obvious reasons). Any other Charlottesvillians catch the show? Cred points: -10

Not higher education. The south has notoriously low standards for elementary and highschools and real issues with poverty, particularly in rural areas (and among rural blacks).

dhoyt, she once had a beautiful voice and I still enjoy a few of her early albums but I never could bear Joan Baez after she started preaching--for forty years she has creeped me out. One of my friends once referred to her as ten pounds of sincerity in a five pound bag. I would add fifty pounds of narcissistic ego to that as well. Nothing about that story surprises me. I can't stand to hear her yammering. But then I can't stand Michael Moore either and I hate Air America. It's so awful and such a stupid idea. Hate radio is hate radio--why add to the abomination ?
posted by y2karl at 10:20 PM on November 10, 2004

Yeah, I've always had a strange affinity for her voice. I only attended as a social thing, knowing it would have some goofy moments being just after the election. The minstrel thing certainly isn't hatespeech or anything it's just.....I dunno. Silly with a capital S. I can't imagine a whiter woman trying to inhabit the soul of a Southern black girl. Karl, I wish I'd gotten it on video. The fifty pounds of narcissim is/was in full effect!

"multiple personalities."

Silly ''blackspeak'' aside, I found that part most depressing. If it's lame schtick, that's one thing--otherwise she's become another Roseanne. I suppose she'll become a Kabbalist next. Then an Oprahtic talk show on PBS: Today, Lilith talks menstrual sponges with Robin Williams and Meg Ryan.
