a piss-take in a meta sandbox December 1, 2004 1:59 PM Subscribe
Probably the most fun I can remember having here, despite running as it does very much counter to the notion that MetaFilter is not a soapbox, and your primary subject should be links, not opinions.
It's a piss-take, but some of us needed that. Anyway, come on in, the water's fine. And thanks again to Vidiot.

I'm trying to think of a nice way to say "If I wanted to hear middle-aged suburbanites talking self-importantly about punk rock, I'd go to my college reunions."
Whoops, guess I couldn't.
I remember screaming along with Black Flag at the Rat way back in the Carter administration. Now Henry Rollins and I are both gray-haired and largely irrelevant.
I prefer not to ponder that because I'm already on the largest doses of antidepressants my liver can tolerate.

I'm not sure, but is MetaTalk turning into MetaTribute where disgruntled threads can be revived from deletion and rehashed again and again?
There IS a reason why they get deleted.
And I guess its a sign of how uncool I am but "punk" isn't cool. Being punk isn't cool, looking punk isn't cool and smelling punk isn't cool.
Now I'm going to go home and play with my Barry Manilow dolls.

Sidhedevil: speak for yourself. I'm nowhere near middle aged and I won't be even when I am.

I'm just not passionate about people's lengthy perorations about popular music.
And lengthy pseudo-intellectual discussions about the music that was popular when you were a kid is the first sign of middle age. Sorry to break it to you, adamgreenfield.
However, I do see that you're not a "suburbanite", so I take that part back.

I was just sad and exhausted at (what I thought was) the end of that sad and exhausting thread, and wanted to see it off to a better destination. Fortunately, a few other folks seemed to have their sets tuned to that wavelength too.

My apologies, and I withdraw everything I said above. Except about the antidepressants. And Henry Rollins. And the errands. The "errands" really are a sign of middle age.
And I'm afraid to do self-important blather for fun, because my face might get stuck that way. I'm already having enough trouble with it as it is!

soyjoy, you missed the point entirely. The previous one had not merely timed off the front page but into another month's archives.
It didn't seem meet to me that people should have to click down three times to find a still-active discussication, so I posted a link. You'll redeem yourself forever in my eyes if you express a clearcut opinion on the actual topic under discussion. In this case: did, or did not, James Osterberg invent contemporary music one chicken-sexing night in darkest Michigan in 1966?

It's a good discussion, I agree. But it was off-topic for the thread (regardless of the quality of the thread); and posting a new MeTa thread to call attention to it is not what MeTa is for. Furthermore, one of the two main participants in the discussion posting a new MeTa thread calling attention to it is, well, indiscreet. Looking at it generously, however, it's obvious that adamgreenfield thinks that the discussion is the best thing that's happened on mefi in four years, he had a really, really, really good time in it, and he just wants to share the joy. Too bad that he expects his own earnestness to be taken seriously and kindly while he himself most often assumes the worst and takes the oppurtunity to ridicule. But, such is human nature.

Too bad that he expects his own earnestness to be taken seriously... posting a new MeTa thread to call attention to it is not what MeTa is for.
OMG you are such an ass! "Earnestness"? If you're so nearsighted and/or cognitively challenged as to mistake what you're reading for "earnestness," it's no wonder you can't get laid.
Anyway, Inspector Bligh of the Blog Police, if the (cough) "derailment" is such a violation of MeFi Holy Writ, how come Matt didn't nip it in the bud when he had the chance? How come he's even communicated his wry amusement with it in this very thread?
I can tell right now that pondering this will keep you awake tonight.
Krrlson, soyjoy:
In this case: did, or did not, James Osterberg invent contemporary music one chicken-sexing night in darkest Michigan in 1966?...The clock's ticking steadily toward zero and the stakes are sky-high. Time to shit or get off the pot.
How you could get through that statement without laughing is utterly beyond me. I didn't mean it as a litmus test, but as it turns out it functions nicely as one.
Again, I'm sorry you found it, this thread, the other one so offensive. I shall hang my head in shame and never again try to turn something sad and uncomfortable into an opportunity for people to express and enjoy themselves. And I sincerely hope that in your next life you return as something with a sense of humor.
Vidiot, jonmc, gompa, rocketman, Dick Paris, LionIndex, lbergstr, and yerfatma: I salute you and again salute you. Thanks so much.

EB, my man, you yourself said it was a "good discussion." Why didn't you just join in? You're a smart guy, I'm sure you could have contributed something good, and like the rest of us stretched your mental muscles, relieved some tension and had some fun. It was good for me, good for the site and it would've been good for you.

Dude, Adam. Do you even see how far you've fallen from "most fun in years" toward "shrill screaming?" I wouldn't want to be a dick and delete someone's "most fun ever" thread, either. That doesn't mean it serves any purpose, except perhaps to take what was a good time and turn it into a run-of-the-mill MetaShitfest. Let's turn out the light here, shall we?
If anything good comes out of this, it will be you and jonmc locking arms and GYOWFWs. I say that in the nicest, most encouraging way possible.

Let me guess: since you "contribute" so much substance around here, as opposed to Krrlson, myself, et al, you've got a mandate to be really condescending. Sure. "Do as I say, not as I do"--we'll have to remember that next time.
Watch out, Bligh--keep it up and you might get called a "crypto-nazi" by Mr. Greenfield, which, if nothing else, will give you a tremendous belly laugh at the lameness of it all, and remind you that, yeah, depite the High Road posturing of certain users, we're all "cultivated dicks" around here, like it or not.

Since I said I'd get off the pot, I will, but I gotta say, of all the things that make me laugh out loud (which somehow ag can monitor based on the words I type?), one of the biggest has to be people who, upon being pointedly laughed at, strenuously bemoan the laugher's "sense of humor." That's comedy gold, adam. Keep it up.
