Probably the most fun I can remember having here, despite running as it does very much counter to the notion that MetaFilter is not a soapbox, and your primary subject should be links, not opinions.

It's a piss-take, but some of us needed that. Anyway, come on in, the water's fine. And thanks again to Vidiot.

Whoops, guess I couldn't.

I remember screaming along with Black Flag at the Rat way back in the Carter administration. Now Henry Rollins and I are both gray-haired and largely irrelevant.

I prefer not to ponder that because I'm already on the largest doses of antidepressants my liver can tolerate.

I'm passionate about music.

I'm just not passionate about people's lengthy perorations about popular music.

And lengthy pseudo-intellectual discussions about the music that was popular when you were a kid is the first sign of middle age. Sorry to break it to you, adamgreenfield.

However, I do see that you're not a "suburbanite", so I take that part back.

Anyways. Oh, come on, lighten up. It would only be "pseudo-intellectual" if anyone took it as seriously as you seem to want to. I was just sad and exhausted at (what I thought was) the end of that sad and exhausting thread, and wanted to see it off to a better destination. Fortunately, a few other folks seemed to have their sets tuned to that wavelength too.

So I once again extend the invitation, to you specifically: come on in, the water's fine. I couldn't care in the slightest if you talk about punkrock or petunias or Sung-dynasty calligraphy, but I do want you to come rant about something.

Well, I did go back and look at the thread as of now, and now I see that you are purposefully having fun with the self-important blather, rather than generating the self-important blather for real. From the first few posts, that wasn't apparent--at least not to me--hence my impatience.

My apologies, and I withdraw everything I said above. Except about the antidepressants. And Henry Rollins. And the errands. The "errands" really are a sign of middle age.

And I'm afraid to do self-important blather for fun, because my face might get stuck that way. I'm already having enough trouble with it as it is!

It's a good discussion, I agree. But it was off-topic for the thread (regardless of the quality of the thread); and posting a new MeTa thread to call attention to it is not what MeTa is for. Furthermore, one of the two main participants in the discussion posting a new MeTa thread calling attention to it is, well, indiscreet. Looking at it generously, however, it's obvious that adamgreenfield thinks that the discussion is the best thing that's happened on mefi in four years, he had a really, really, really good time in it, and he just wants to share the joy. Too bad that he expects his own earnestness to be taken seriously and kindly while he himself most often assumes the worst and takes the oppurtunity to ridicule. But, such is human nature.

Anyway, Inspector Bligh of the Blog Police, if the (cough) "derailment" is such a violation of MeFi Holy Writ, how come Matt didn't nip it in the bud when he had the chance? How come he's even communicated his wry amusement with it in this very thread?

I can tell right now that pondering this will keep you awake tonight.

Krrlson, soyjoy:

How you could get through that statement without laughing is utterly beyond me. I didn't mean it as a litmus test, but as it turns out it functions nicely as one.

Again, I'm sorry you found it, this thread, the other one so offensive. Haggard is one of the few country artists I'd like to have seen in concert, and I've not. 'Course, when you buy your ticket it's almost like buying a lottery ticket. Maybe he'll show, maybe he won't. :)

Well, as yer all still here...

The Undertones, Oxford New Theatre, 1978.

Feargal threw a Mars Bar over my head. I was [shame! I was a late starter!] 18, and only two other gigs have beaten that to this day.

The last time I bought a ticket to see the Hag he cancelled due to ill health, but prior to that I have seen him about six times, in many different kinds of venues, and, unlike some country legends, he never phones it in.

My first:
Thin Lizzy
Hammersmith Odeon, London
1977

Fine Young Cannibals.

OWNED!

Oh, you are sadly mistaken.

What is it for, then, in your oh-so-humble opinion?

Wankery, twaddle, and poppycock. Don't even think about calling it blither.

Pink Floyd (Animals)- 1977, Madison Square Garden. Floating pigs, real blotter... need I say more?

In the words of MC Hammer (some gin mill, 1991), "U Can't Touch This."

Well, my first concert was Stryper. Top that.

I'd have loved to see Victor Borge. Any time. I hate you.

hehehe

It actually feels GOOD to be hated

First rock concert was Springsteen, the Tunnel of Love tour.

(But three years later, I saw the Fine Young Cannibals -- with both Young MC and Neneh Cherry opening.)

Well, I dd see Victor Borge when I was around eight or nine, at the Keith-Albee Theater in Huntington, WV. Hilarious.

You're from Vermont too?

Come to think of it, I saw Lionel Hampton perform when I was maybe seven to nine years old.

Prince, Lovesexy Tour, 1987, in the Directors' Box at Maine Road stadium, sitting next to popular footballing legend John Barnes, aged 10 (me, not Barnes) - now that's punk rock. Sort of.

My first show was The Scorpions at the New Haven Coliseum, with fucking Bon Jovi opening up in 1985. I was 14. My second show was the Beach Boys and Poco at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport. The music was good, but oddly, what I remember most was that the woman behind me's boobs were rubbing against my back the whole show.

Ah, sweet youth.

I was forced to attaned a Hank Williams, Jr. show in 1974. Couldn't help it, though. I was in utero.
posted by COBRA! at 7:12 AM on December 3, 2004

Ha, Led Zeppelin in '74, also in utero! Though I think the combination of Boone's Farm & cheap weed my Mom enjoyed during the show may have had some ill effects :(

You guys had hep parents.

My dad saw Danny & the Juniors once, I think.

Hey, I'd like to defend Hank, Jr. a little bit. He's 80% schlock, but occasionally good. Well, twenty years ago. I don't know about now. But, also, I saw him in concert one time, and it was a good show. What impressed me most was that he played about five different instruments, well.

Boone's Farm! Now there's something I hadn't thought of in about a million years!

(Yes, it is worrying that I am more nostalgic over my first wine than my first concert)

Boone's Farm makes me think of my mom in the 70s. Nowadays, she drinks it from a box with a spiggot. (Mom, if you're out there, I love ya, this is gentle ribbing.)

/wants to hang with EB's mom

Something funny I just remembered: when Page & Plant reunited in '95, my Dad immediately bought us tickets to their very first show in Pensacola since he knew I liked Zeppelin in high school--certainly the heppest Dad move he'd ever made, or has made ever since. Long story short, the show was amazing and I drank Boone's Farm that night! The bruised apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Wow. My dad dragged me to see him play at the San Diego Zoo when I was 7 and they had a summer jazz concert series. I also saw Cab Calloway that summer.

Yeah, EB, I think you're right. Hank Jr. in 1974 would have been a totally different animal. Anyone trying to take me to see him now, though, had better have a tazer gun and a shitload of fish tranquilizer.

What's less punk than a bunch of dudes reminiscing about Punk in an unrelated MetaTalk thread?

nothing, ab.so.lute.ly nothing.

first concert (that i remember) - lenny breau 1965, my living room, winnpeg, mostly christmas tunes. also my first time making a bootleg tape. definitely something i need to convert to mp3.

(t r a c y's Dad is a cool drummer. Kind of Kenny Clarke-ish.)
